On this week’s episode of The Rural Woman Podcast you will meet, Kerri Giesbrecht.

From stilettos to rubber boots; Kerri was born and raised as a city girl that has turned a whole lot country thanks to her husband. Her farm is everything high maintenance (as her husband likes to call it). Kerri has all the animals (sheep, chickens and horses), she runs a U-Pick veggie garden in the summer, make livestock feed for not only her farm but other farms as well, runs a farm market in the summer months and on-farm events. And in her not so much downtime she helps her husband with his grain farm operation. According to Kerri she doesn’t sleep much, drinks far too much coffee, but she loves what she does and even on the hard days it’s better than going to her old 9-4 job in downtown Edmonton.

The Rural Woman Podcast - Waste Not Wool with Leanna Maksymiuk
play

01/14/22 • 43 min

Leanna Maksymiuk along with her family own Lone Sequoia Ranch just outside of Lumby BC. As a first generation rancher, she wasn’t even sure she wanted sheep but accidentally fell in love with her daughters 4H ewe and that was it!

Her flock of Navajo-Churro sheep make up the majority of the sheep she cares for, and growing sought after wool is a top priority.

After selling out of her own wool clip and learning that so many local farmers were composting their wool instead of processing it, Leanna decided to seek out this compost and garbage destined wool and started Waste Not Wool. She purchases and takes in “unwanted” fleece, processes it and sells it as roving and yarn. It is an important part of her journey into wool to share the value that all wool has with her followers and customers.

Leanna and her husband Mark are also raising their two daughters, one which happens to have Down syndrome and Autism.

The Rural Woman Podcast - Connecting to Your Community with Caroline Fanning
play

04/29/22 • 44 min

On this week's episode of The Rural Woman PodcastTM, you'll meet Caroline Fanning.

Caroline Fanning grew in on suburban Long Island, NY, and spent her summers hanging out and working at the beach. She moved upstate for college, where there were no beaches but plenty of farms. Her first farm job was at the Poughkeepsie Farm Project, a 7-acre vegetable farm where she learned the CSA model and where she met Dan Holmes, who would later become her business partner and husband.

Over the next fifteen years, they modeled their farm—Restoration Farm— on the Poughkeepsie Farm Project. The five-acre operation now produces vegetables, berries, flowers, and herbs for 120 CSA members. Its onsite farm stand is open three days a week during the growing season and every other weekend throughout the winter. The farm hosts student tours, volunteer opportunities, and small-scale events, and prides itself on providing meaningful, commercial-free opportunities to engage with nature on public land.

On today’s episode of The Rural Woman Podcast, you’ll meet Melissa Ballard. Melissa lives and farms in the beautiful Bluegrass State of Kentucky, along with her husband, Josh, who is also a veterinarian. If you had told Melissa 20 years ago that she would be raising and selling grass fed beef for a living, she would have laughed. But life is funny that way, and Melissa now truly believes her passion and purpose is to provide people with beef that is raised in a way that is healthy for the land, healthy for our cattle, and healthy for our bodies.

Melissa shares her story with us today and also shares how Local Line has helped take their business, Bluegrass Beef, online.

Be sure once you’re done listening to Melissa’s interview you check out my interview with Jennifer Webb, Local Line’s Customer Success Manager, to learn more about local line and the service they are providing to growers to be able to sell from farm to table.

Instead of their standard 7-day free trial, Local Line is offering listeners of The Rural Woman Podcast a 30-day free trial of their software and a free premium feature with your first year’s subscription. Visit go.localline.ca/ruralwoman to get started.

The Rural Woman Podcast - Starting a Homestead Where You’re At with Natalie Green
play

02/25/22 • 51 min

On this week’s episode of The Rural Woman Podcast, you will meet Natalie Green, a passionate homesteader with a one-acre farm in Richmond, VA. When Natalie and her husband moved to their home 3 years ago Natalie knew she wanted a big garden and a few chickens for eggs. She was also excited to produce her own food in hopes that it would help some issues she faces due to an autoimmune disorder.

Natalie started her social media account to promote the eggs that she was selling from her front porch. She had been furloughed due to the pandemic and was just looking for a way to keep the feed bins full.

It’s important to Natalie that people see someone that looks like her learning, making mistakes, and using the space she has to grow literally and figuratively as a black female homesteader.

At 26 years young, Sierra is the owner of Iron Horse Animal Health Products, a company that manufactures high-quality but affordable supplements and feed for horses and livestock like chickens, sheep, and cows. She graduated from Westminster College with a degree in Financial Economics in December of 2018, but after taking her first accounting job, knew that wasn’t the right career path for her. In July 2021, she had the opportunity to purchase Iron Horse, an established company that had been in business since 1967, from founder Dr. David Swaney and left her office job to pursue the more fitting and exciting lifestyle of being an entrepreneur. Along with running Iron Horse and going on the many trips that it requires, Sierra also enjoys training and racing standardbred harness racing horses.
