Receiving feedback can be painful, awkward, vulnerable, and excruciating. Yet it can be a beautiful gift. Resilient leaders understand this. In this brief, but value-packed episode, J.R. shares why proactively seeking out feedback is crucial for resilient leaders. He also shares stories about when he went to trapeze school and how he solicits feedback from his sons who to be a better dad and from his students in his seminary courses on a weekly basis. He also gives valuable next step for how leaders can receive helpful feedback.
Here are the five questions to ask 10 friends mentioned in the podcast:

1. Name one thing I do well without putting any effort into.

2. What 3 words would you use to describe me?

3. Name one area of my life where you see room for improvement. Where can I be better?

4. If you were put in charge of the world’s resources, what would you assign me to do?

5. What happens when I walk in a room? Good or bad, what shows up when I show up?

Also, see Sheila Heen’s book ‘Thanks for the Feedback’ for a wonderful resource on giving and receiving feedback.

The Resilient Leaders Podcast with J.R. Briggs

06/23/20 • 11 min

Today we talk about the importance of preparation in leading an engaging, helpful, effective meeting. We’ve all sat through great meetings... and we’ve sat through meetings that felt like a waste of time. Leaders must think critically, thoughtfully, and carefully through how we structure meetings.
In this episode we talk about the structure of a meeting, the questions to ask before you lead a meeting, and the principles you should enact in the meeting.
The 4 V structure for every meeting you lead should include:

  • Value
  • Victory
  • Vision
  • Voice

We also look at the crucial questions you should ask yourself regarding meetings:

  • Who really needs to be here?
  • How frequent should we have the meetings?
  • How long should the meeting be?
  • How can I make this meeting as hard as possible for people to fall asleep or tune out?
  • Can I ask my people to do some preparation or pre-work before coming to the meeting?
  • What is the brief, compelling, and clearly stated purpose of this meeting?

We finally, we explore several principles for how to run a meeting, including ensuring you always end the meeting by asking the David Allen question: “Who is doing what by when?”

On today’s episode, we look at the rhythm of the best leaders: action-reflection-action. Then we take time to explore a handful of helpful questions to assist you in your reflection. The list of questions are listed below:

1. What’s giving me joy in the season?

2. What’s draining me, and why?

3. As I look back on my leadership over the past handful of months, what am I most proud of? What have I learned?

4. As I look back on my leadership, what mistakes have I made, and what have I learned from them?

5. If we own the numbers we can hold ourselves accountable. What numbers are you measuring right now?

6. Who do I want to work with moving forward? Who are the people I could bring on my team, people I could partner with, or organizations that we could join forces with, formally or informally, in the days ahead?

7. What am I afraid of? Where am I letting my fears keep me from experimenting, or acting in a way that is consistent with what I value the most?

8. What do I need to care about more in the season? What do I need to care about less?

9. What do my prayers look like in the season? And what keeps me from a consistent, vibrant prayer life?

10. What does it look like for me to be a well-rested leader going into the fall?

11. It’s been said, “We can’t control the volatile tides of change, but we can learn to build better boats.” If you were to build a better boat, how would you do it and what would it look like?

12. Who is invested in you? Who has encouraged you, and made you who you are today? How can you thank them this week?

13. If you were to grow in leadership by just five or 10% this fall, what would that look like? And who will be the person or people who can help you do that?

This episode we talk about why every leader must pass the Bread Truck Test. We talk about what the Bread Truck Test is, what it means to move from possessing a diminisher mindset to a multiplier mindset, and how we can move from leadership by addition to leadership by multiplication.

J.R. talked about the great book by Liz Wiseman Multipliers: How the Best People Make Everyone Smarter. It’s a fantastic book – one he highly recommends.
