Mayo Sowell’s career has taken him to the pulpit, but his life path could’ve led to a different and much darker place. An Auburn football standout whose pro career was cut short by injury, he got into the drug trade and was eventually sentenced to five years in federal prison. Toward the end of his sentence, though, a chance encounter with a fellow inmate guided him to God and a total change in his world view. With frankness and humor, Mayo talks about the lessons he’s learned over the course of his eventful life, and about the message he tries to put forth as pastor at LIIV Atlanta, the church he founded last year. Men of all ages and backgrounds can benefit from his advice for maintaining healthy friendships and staying humble in a world full of temptation.

The Redeemed Man - Healthy Communication in Marriage
play

02/16/23 • 53 min

Great communicators aren’t born, they’re made—and that goes double for people in relationships, who have to commit to learning more every day about their partners and how best to speak, listen, and relate to them.
In this podcast, Jon and Teresa “Tree” Demeter cover a wide range of topics including being a more active listener, shutting out distractions, and what it’s been like sharing those lessons with couples in their “Weekend to Remember” marriage retreats. They even offer tips on being “good at fighting”—listening for understanding rather than ammunition, and turning arguments into opportunities for growth and problem-solving, rather than just venting frustration and being “right.”

Jerrad Lopes didn’t have much of a role model for being a good father—his own dad bailed on the family when Jerrad was just 3—and he admits to making plenty of mistakes as a husband and father himself. But in an effort to process his conflicted emotions, he started a blog that went viral and eventually turned into the Dad Tired ministry, which tries to equip men to lead their families well—whether they grew up with good role models or not. This week Jerrad talks with Nate Dewberry about his ministry, filling the vital roles of spouse, parent, and disciple, and giving his children the tools to do the same.

The Redeemed Man - We Do Hard Things Every Day
play

11/09/23 • 44 min

The stops on Thomas Cox’s physical fitness journey include four years as a quarterback for the UAB Blazers, seven as a college football coach, and the creation of both a health-oriented meal delivery service and a successful catering company. One of the biggest keys to his success, he says—in business, fitness, and life—is being willing to do hard things. “When hard tasks come up that are unknown,” he explains, “I want to go back to the hard things that I’ve done and say, ‘I did that, I know I can do this.’” In this week’s podcast with Nate Dewberry, Thomas talks about the challenges and joys of being a businessman, what he’s learned as a husband and father, and the times when men need to be a little selfish to keep themselves improving. He even shares some simple but profound tips on how men can start feeling healthier almost right away.

Patrick Tyndall joins The Redeemed Man podcast. Patrick Tyndall, founder of Ironman Outdoors, in which men bond with each other over both hunting and discussion sessions that give them a chance to open up about their deepest fears and insecurities. Particularly for men who are disinclined to attend church regularly in the first place, traditional church environments can be a difficult place to be honest and reveal their true selves—to “drop their camo,” as Tyndall describes it.
But an IO hunting trip, he says, provides an engaging way for men to relax and bond with one another, even if they’re complete strangers. “If you put him in a hunting cabin or a lake house with 12 other men and they’re willing to take their camo off and say, ‘Hey, this is what I’m dealing with,’ then they’ll be more likely to take their camo off too.”

The Redeemed Man - Making a Military Marriage Work
play

02/08/24 • 82 min

Life in the military is never easy, but there are entirely new challenges when you have to balance your service obligations with your responsibilities as a spouse and parents. This week we bring you conversations with two couples—Jim and Tabitha Pooler and Russ and Cindy Leaphart—about some specific challenges they've faced and how they persevered. For the Leapharts, it was having to help their children adjust to frequent moves and "re-orienting" when Army work started cutting into family responsibilities; for the Poolers, it was coping with the trauma of multiple miscarriages while Tabitha and Jim were on opposite sides of the world. Through their stories you'll learn lessons on open and honest communication, the importance of thorough planning, and how to keep the stress of military life from overwhelming an otherwise happy marriage.

The Redeemed Man - Leaving Pornography, Finding Wholeness
play

07/20/23 • 40 min

Getting a glimpse of one of dad’s Playboy magazines is so common it’s treated as a rite of passage for many men, but beneath that patina of innocence lies the potential for real and lasting damage. Rev. Michael Cusick was first exposed to porn at age 4 and by his teen years was a full-blown porn addict; it continued to blossom into a sex addiction that nearly destroyed his marriage. But he turned his life around and founded Restoring the Soul, a ministry that combines therapeutic principles with scripture to help men overcome unhealthy sexual dependencies. Michael talks with Paul Amos in this week’s podcast about the real damage porn addiction can do and how men can break free of it to lead more fulfilling lives.

The Redeemed Man - Live Your Eulogy Every Day
play

10/19/23 • 38 min

Greg Countryman didn’t make it from special-ed student to quadruple-degreed college graduate, professor, and now sheriff of Muscogee County, Georgia, without gaining some important insights along the way. This week the three-decade law enforcement veteran talks with Paul Amos about his personal journey, the challenges one faces as a high-profile public servant, and the hallmarks of good leadership. One key is knowing when to be willing to compromise, but there are some things, he says, that you should never compromise on—first and foremost, putting the Lord first and striving to do things “God’s way, not your way.”

Jay Cookingham joins The Redeemed Man podcast. Jay Cookingham, founder of Strategic Fathering Ministries, which encourages men to embrace God’s call to aid and mentor other people in need. It’s those kinds of people, “strategically placed” in his life, whom Cookingham says helped him find God and strengthen his faith after years of horrific abuse from his father. “God gave me other men in my life to help me deal with the issues of manhood,” he explains. “So I think it’s very strategic of Father God to have a plan for each one of us as a son or a daughter of God and to orchestrate that walk, that path, that journey, to bring us closer to His own heart.”
