Cabin crew know that, when they do this job, you're going to be away for the big events. Holidays, Birthdays, Weddings. But they also try and make the most of the times they are away.
Today's episode is one of my own stories. About the Christmas I spent in Johannesburg. I was sad when I heard I was flying over Christmas, and that it was a short layover in a place that didn't feel very Christmassy. Then I tried to make the most of it and found an orphanage near Johannesburg that was in need of some Christmas cheer. This trip changed my perspective on life forever, and I hope it will give you something to think about over this time of merriment and excess.

Cabin crew are trained for all eventualities in the air. Fire, Medicals, Restraints... We hope that we never have to use these skills but every so often we do. But what happens when you need to restrain 250lbs of pure muscle and you have an all female crew with no match for size?
In todays episode of The Red Eye Podcast, we hear the true story of a flight attendant on their very first flight, who has to prepare to use the very training they only just learnt.

In todays episode, instead of a short story, we chat to Dave Sanderson, who was one of the last passengers to evacuate when his plane ditched into the Hudson River on flight 1549 in January 2009, and how it diverted his life for good.
Not many people can say they have survived a plane crash, and in this interview we here from Dave how it feels to see an emergency happening in real time. What it felt like to crash and what it felt like to be in the water. Dave is an incredible person who has taken one of the most traumatic experiences of his life, and has turned into a force of good. Helping people around the world draw growth from horrific times. He is a true inspiration!

It used to be that you only gave the job to man. Even if that man had no clue what he was doing!
On today's episode of The Red Eye, we go back to the 90's to tell the true story of a brand new cabin crew member who was accidentally left in charge of the Boeing 747 flight deck. We learn that the rules in the aviation industry were definitely a little looser back then, and some of the old boys were very stuck in their ways....

Warning - this episode contains a story about severe turbulence and injuries on board. This could be upsetting to those with a fear of flying.
Occurrences of severe turbulence are thankfully rare. But surprisingly, the landing into Sydney can get quite bumpy and has been given the nickname "The Kangaroo Route", due to the jumping nature of the approach.
In todays episode, we follow 4 different crew members as they experience the worst turbulence of their careers. How will it affect the crew and their passengers?
