For 40 Days After the Resurrection, Jesus Opened the Scriptures and He Opened His Disciples' Eyes
The Bible ... a “Closed” Book?
Have you ever felt as if the Old Testament is ...
- a "closed" book for you?
- daunting, overwhelming, confusing, strange, irrelevant, inaccessible, unnecessary, beyond comprehension?
- for pastors and professors BUT NOT for me?
If you have ever felt that way, take heart. The disciples felt the same way.
All of the Scriptures Point to Jesus
For forty days after His resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples and taught them about the Kingdom of God. He opened up the Old Testament (the Books of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms) and "eXPlained" to them that all of the Scriptures foretold, foreshadowed and revealed His suffering, death and resurrection for the forgiveness of sins.
As We Open the Scriptures, Jesus Opens our Eyes
What Jesus did with His disciples, He also wants to do with us.
When we open up the Scriptures, He will open our eyes to see and our hearts to believe, that His death and resurrection give to us the greatest gift, the forgiveness of sins.
And when you have the forgiveness of sins in Jesus, you have ... everything!

Praying the Psalms with Jesus: Day 47
The Receptive Life: Learning How to Receive All of the Gifts That Only the Triune God Can Give
09/09/21 • 9 min
When you first begin praying your way through the Psalms, you might feel as if you’re a spiritual pilgrim traveling through a strange yet sacred land. Start traveling and it doesn’t take long to realize that this prayerbook (and hymnal) given to the Church by God Himself is different literary territory than the rest of the Scriptures.
Each Psalm is filled with new sights with stunning and striking images, different sounding words and phrases, and picture promises of Messiah. In the prayers and hymns, emotions are given full voice. Sighs, laments, rants, rage against enemies, doubts, questions, thanksgiving, praise and “hallelujahs” all live together in a sacred tension.
Traveling this road alone can be disorienting. What we need on this journey through the Psalms is a spiritual guide, a native of the land, ONE who has the spiritual accent of the territory. We need ONE who has lived and walked and prayed the Psalms before us and FOR us. We need ONE who now desires to pray them with us. That ONE is our Brother, the Lord Jesus, our Great High Priest.
And so, we pray the Psalms with Jesus.

The Receptive Life: Learning How to Receive All of the Gifts That Only the Triune God Can Give

In 2021 I wanted to create some way to offer a Christ centered, consistent, and convenient digital deliverable (daily email) that would help you, your family and friends hear the Word of God and use it to comfort your souls and fight the devil.
“Friends and Daggers” is daily vlog (email subscription) that delivers short videos (3-5 min.) directly to your inbox every Monday through Saturday.
In each video I …
- introduce you to “friends”, small portions of the Scriptures that comfort, console and never fail or forsake
- give you a “dagger” (the sword of the Spirit) that will help you fight against the Devil, the world and the sinful flesh
- remind you that the person and work of Jesus, His Word, and all of His promises remain the same yesterday, today and forever
On Sundays I deliver a longer vlogcast (eXPlain it) highlighting the Scripture readings for the Lord’s Day . The Sunday post will also have an Old and New Testament reading schedule for each day of the Church Year.

The "Salutary Uses" of the Scripture
The Receptive Life: Learning How to Receive All of the Gifts That Only the Triune God Can Give
10/15/21 • 7 min
Welcome to our new vlogcast series, How to Read, Understand and Make Use of the Scriptures.
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
As the Apostle Paul declares, all of Scripture is useful for ...
- proclaiming right teaching about the Triune God
- rebuking and refuting the false teaching of the devil and his agents of deception
- correcting wrong living
- encouraging, exhorting and training in right living
- and they always point to the person and work of Jesus for the forgiveness of sins
For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. (Romans 15:4 NIV)
The Holy Spirit Helps Us Answer the Two Main Questions
If you feel like the Bible is an intimidating, overwhelming, daunting and closed book, take heart! We don't read the Scriptures alone.
As we open the Bible, we have the promise that the Holy Spirit will be the Real Teacher. The very One who gave "God-/Breathed Words" to the prophets, evangelists and apostles, will help us understand and make use of the Scriptures.
He will open our minds and help us answer two basic questions:
- What does this portion of Scripture mean? What is God saying in and through the words of the text? What is the content of the words and sentences and paragraphs? What’s the context of His revelation? How do I interpret the text and find the Triune God’s one intended meaning?
- How does God want to apply these words to me? What gift do these words offer? What work does God want to do through them? Does He want to reveal/convict me of my sin? Does He want to reveal and offer the forgiveness of sins in Jesus? What is the Scripture’s “salutary use” for my life?
As the Psalmist prays, "Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law." (Psalm 119:18)

A Daily Vlog Called "Friends and Daggers"
I was thinking about creating a daily vlog called "Friends and Daggers". It would be an email subscription that would deliver short, daily videos (3-5 minutes) every Monday through Friday (maybe Saturday) directly to a subscriber's inbox . I would also post the audio version on this podcast.
In each daily video I would ...
- introduce you to "friends", small portions of the Scriptures that comfort, console and never fail or forsake
- give you a "dagger" (the sword of the Spirit) that will help you fight against the Devil, the world and the sinful flesh
- remind you that the person and work of Jesus, His Word, and all of His promises remain the same yesterday, today and forever
I shot a couple of videos to give you an overview of what the daily vlog might look like. If you have a moment, could you watch and send comments, suggestions and impressions. I'm trying to find the "voice" of the videos and need some objective feedback.
Here are the links ...
- Introduction and Overview Video (this gives you a "big picture" view of "Friends and Daggers")
- Sample Video: John 11:35 (this is what the daily vlogposts would look like)
- You can also access the videos in the "Friend and Daggers" course at the "eXPlain it" portal
- Fillable PDF of the "Two Voices" Worksheet
Sign Up for "Friends and Daggers" Daily Vlog Test Group
If you, your friends or family would like to be part of a beta test group, you can sign up by clicking on the button below.
Thanks again for your time and encouragement. We'll commend the work into the Lord's hands.
