#34 What is Life Coaching with HPG
The Real HPG
07/25/23 • 7 min
Today, we're looking into the world of life coaching and uncovering the transformative impact it can have on your life.
We unravel the essence of a life coach and how they can help individuals discover their purpose and reach their full potential.
I define a life coach as a trained professional who assists individuals in living a fulfilling life by helping them find their purpose and navigate their journey with purpose and intention.
To better illustrate the difference between therapy and life coaching, let's consider the following scenario: Imagine you've had heart surgery. The cardiologist's role is akin to that of a therapist, as they address and heal past trauma or emotional wounds. Once you're on the path to recovery, you seek the guidance of a physical therapist, who represents the life coach. The physical therapist helps you set goals, strategize, and support you in reaching your full potential.
It's important to note that therapy and life coaching can complement each other, and some individuals may benefit from seeing both professionals concurrently.
Therapy primarily focuses on analyzing fears, healing past experiences and trauma, emotional well-being, mood management, and diagnosing and treating mental health conditions.
Life coaching emphasizes removing fear, celebrating achievements, focusing on the future, strategizing for action, and promoting personal growth and results.
While therapy is a regulated profession, with licensed practitioners adhering to specific ethical standards, life coaching is a self-regulated field.
This means that life coaches take responsibility for adhering to ethical guidelines and often pursue certification to enhance their skills and credibility. The emergence of life coaching as a recognized profession gained traction about 20 years ago and continues to evolve.
For me personally, my journey with life coaching began during my cancer battle, where I experienced its profound impact, becoming one of the most valuable resources during that challenging time. Inspired by this transformation, I felt a desire to help others in the same way. I enrolled in Martha Beck's Wayfinder Life Coach Training program, a decision that has proven to be an eye-opening experience of self-improvement, self-discovery, and personal growth.
With a background as a social worker spanning over two decades, I've always been inclined to help others. The integration of my social work skills with the tools and practices of life coaching has ignited a new passion within me to support individuals in a different way.
I am currently undergoing extensive training and practical work with clients and fellow trainees to refine my skills and gain practical experience. As a result, I am offering discounted rates for new clients, which allows me to practice the tools I've learned while offering affordable support to those seeking guidance on their personal journeys.
If you're interested in exploring the possibilities of life coaching and discovering how it can empower you to lead a more purposeful life, I invite you to connect with me on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/accordingtohpg. My offer to you is a free discovery call to explore the potential for a mutually beneficial coaching relationship.
As my journey toward certification progresses, I am loving the testimonials from those I've had the privilege of working with, witnessing the positive impact of life coaching on their lives.
Thank you for tuning in to this episode, and stay tuned for more inspiring discussions, practical tips, and empowering stories as we continue our quest to help you become the best version of yourself. Remember, it's never too late to start living your best life!

I had the pleasure of talking with Dr. Sharon Washington. Dr. Washington shares some vulnerable insight into her past, racial inequities, and what she is doing to help with diversity, equity, and inclusion.
As an Equity, Healing, and impact Consultant, Sharon has worked with various healthcare, corporate, academic, and government agencies to provide executive coaching, facilitate safe and brave spaces, develop & implement curriculum, and guide organizational growth.
She also created Critically Conscious Connections, an online learning platform with self-directed content to increase awareness, allyship, and accompliceship.
Sharon served as faculty in both the Temple University Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She is a Gates Millennium Scholar (GMS), class of 2003, and served as President of the GMS Alumni Association.
She received her Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies from Temple University and her Master of Public Health from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. Sharon earned her Doctorate of Education at Teachers College of Columbia University, where her dissertation explored a national sample of medical student’s perceptions of their medical education curriculum, and their preparedness to deliver cross-cultural care to diverse patient populations.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Stacy Messiner who is a psychologist who helps folks with ketamine-assisted therapy. I am fascinated by this way of helping people, and so excited to share it with you all today.
Dr Meissner is a Psychologist, mother, sister, daughter, and friend. She has cultivated an extraordinary world of close, deep, and meaningful connections with her clients. Her clinical training is extensive and has learned the most from helping patients navigate through the peaks and valleys of life.
She trained and incorporated Ketamine Assisted Therapy into her practice. She has found that combining CBT with Ketamine treatment has led to deeper insights, clearer understanding, and ultimately, newfound lightness.
