Like many Canadian kids, Dave grew up with dreams of playing professional hockey. He made it further than most, getting drafted and stepping into the world of pro hockey. But sometimes, the dream you chase isn’t the one meant for you. Realizing the sport wasn’t his true calling, Dave shifted gears and found a new path as an electrician.
Then, in a single moment, everything changed. A severe workplace accident—an electric shock that sent him plummeting from a ladder—left him with a traumatic brain injury. Dave spent 10 days in a coma, his brain swelling so dangerously that doctors had to remove part of his skull just to relieve the pressure. When he woke up, he couldn’t walk, talk, or do anything on his own. It was as if he had been reborn, forced to relearn life itself.
In this episode, Dave shares the mental and physical battles that followed his accident. Drawing strength from his faith, his family, and the relentless discipline he developed in hockey, he refused to accept defeat. In just three months—a miraculous recovery by medical standards—he was out of the hospital, regaining independence. But the journey wasn’t over. Twelve years later, he still faces daily challenges, from ongoing physical therapy to speech rehabilitation, as he continues to rebuild his life.
Despite the lasting effects of his injury, Dave remains committed to staying positive, trying new things, and being the best father and husband he can be. His story is one of resilience, mental toughness, and a testament to the power of never giving up—even when life knocks you down harder than you could ever imagine.
