The Psychology of Depression and Anxiety - Dr. Scott Eilers

Scott Eilers

There are people who understand depression and anxiety on a personal level and there are people who understand depression and anxiety on a medical level. There are relatively few people who understand both, and I’m one of them. As a clinical psychologist I have a doctorate degree and thousands of hours of professional experience providing treatment for mood and anxiety disorders. I also have 39 years of personal experience managing mood and anxiety disorders as I myself deal with these struggles. This podcast is my attempt to synthesize my personal knowledge with my professional knowledge. Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/scott-eilers/support

The secret is out: gratitude is good for your mental health. But what do you do if you don't feel it? You might be in the situation I was in: I logically understood that gratitude was helpful; I could agree that I had things in my life worthy of gratitude; and yet it never translated from a concept in my head to an experience in my heart. If you experience depression and anxiety, it's not enough to be told to be grateful, or to be told all the things we have to be grateful for or even the benefits of gratitude. You need tools and skills to practice gratitude. I'm going to walk you through 6 gratitude tools I use everyday that help me actually experience gratitude - and all the good things that come with it. When you’re young, you have no ability to meet our own needs - so what happens when those needs don’t get met? When those needs aren’t met, you really only have two options: suffer or learn to ignore the need. Nurturing barriers are subconscious, internal habits you develop as coping mechanisms for not getting things you needed in the early period of your life. This can lead us to feel like we have don’t have emotions, like we’re numb. But what's actually happening is we are doing something inside of ourselves to block the input of that emotion. If this is you right now it may not feel like there’s hope, but stick with me because I truly believe there is. The emotional and physical toll of debilitating anxiety can be overwhelming. What I've found in my life - and in the lives of many clients - is that I fed and enabled my anxiety through my habits and actions. Not on purpose; not even knowingly. The first step to overcoming my chronic anxiety was to see the causes and dismantle them.I'm sharing the 6 things I did to fix my anxiety. These are personal - they worked for me. And, while every person is different, I believe these 6 can have a positive impact on your anxiety as well. If you don't feel excited about the future, it's hard to want to do much of anything. When depression and anxiety are severe, our lives often fall into a black hole where we do little, feel little, and remember little. I barely remember anything about my late teens, and it's mostly because I barely did anything worth remembering. Now that I'm in a better place mentally, I can look back on that period with a different perspective. These feelings, or lack of feelings, don't have to ruin your life. There's a loophole that can still make life feel worth living even in your darkest times, and I'm going to teach it to you today.
