In this episode with my sister, she provides a super vulnerable conversation about the struggles of returning to work full-time, her challenges with exclusively pumping, and why for the first time ever, she truly does not have the mental or physical capacity to exercise. Desiree has felt alone in her struggles, given the “fit mom” culture and bubble we are part of, and in this season, she’s learning where she fits in, and what she needs to do to navigate all the transitions as a new mom, professional and CrossFit athlete.

The Practice Brave Podcast - 127: Well-Rounded Training for When You're Done Having Babies
play

07/28/23 • 35 min

Today, I have Heather join me as we talk about what our life and fitness is like post-babies and what we think a well-rounded fitness program for women should look like for a lifetime of athleticism.

We strongly believe that athleticism does not end when motherhood begins, OR after we’re done having our babies, and especially so as we age. We don’t buy into age being a factor that stops us, but rather an opportunity to continue doing our fitness as long as possible (like my mom, Sharon).

The Practice Brave Fitness Program is designed to give you the well-rounded fitness that you want and need for a full, strong life. It’s a program created based on how we live. Maybe you have a background in dance and CrossFit like Heather and are feeling lost as to what to do next - The Practice Brave Fitness program bridges that gap and gives you the sustainable, reliable programming you want and need.

We also chat about how cool to have our kids be involved in our fitness and see it be a normal part of life. They get to see us become stronger and work hard - and they need to see us doing it. We are in it for the long game. That means we learn how to start over again and again as life gets lifey.

I interviewed Lisa Ryan, a coach and high-level athlete who rehabbed a significant diastasis (was able to do muscle ups and lift heavy etc), yet ultimately chose abdominoplasty surgery to improve both the aesthetic and tension of her midline.

We discuss a lot of what we both expected, and what we were surprised about. This episode is a full disclosure of the good, the bad and the ugly that we wish everyone knew before choosing surgery. This combines both our personal experience and coaching professional take on the before, during and after surgery approach with managing expectations and outcome.

This is part 2 of a 4-episode series on abdominoplasty.

Do you need help knowing if this is right for you? Many have been told that surgery is the only choice to resolve a diastasis, and this is simply NOT true. Please download this free ebook so you can feel fully informed about diastasis, what you can do, and if you choose surgery, this ebook gives you tools, context and resources for navigating:

Happy 65th birthday to my amazing mom, Sharon! She is an inspiration to many and today she shares her story of finding fitness later in life (we’re talking 50s) after overcoming a challenging past of living in survival mode and working all the time to support me and my sister.

Lifting weights was not the norm for my mom’s generation and is only now becoming more of a mainstream activity. Sharon proves that athleticism does not have an expiration date and that you can start at any age to get strong and lift heavy. She just went viral for a video of her deadlifting 200lbs for 5... no big deal. We talk about how important and needed it is to be strong through not only motherhood, but grandmotherhood and as we age. She’s living her best life doing CrossFit, biking, hiking, skiing, Pickleball, and more.
