The Practice Brave Podcast - 127: Well-Rounded Training for When You're Done Having Babies
play

07/28/23 • 35 min

Today, I have Heather join me as we talk about what our life and fitness is like post-babies and what we think a well-rounded fitness program for women should look like for a lifetime of athleticism.

We strongly believe that athleticism does not end when motherhood begins, OR after we’re done having our babies, and especially so as we age. We don’t buy into age being a factor that stops us, but rather an opportunity to continue doing our fitness as long as possible (like my mom, Sharon).

The Practice Brave Fitness Program is designed to give you the well-rounded fitness that you want and need for a full, strong life. It’s a program created based on how we live. Maybe you have a background in dance and CrossFit like Heather and are feeling lost as to what to do next - The Practice Brave Fitness program bridges that gap and gives you the sustainable, reliable programming you want and need.

We also chat about how cool to have our kids be involved in our fitness and see it be a normal part of life. They get to see us become stronger and work hard - and they need to see us doing it. We are in it for the long game. That means we learn how to start over again and again as life gets lifey.

In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Rose El-Sharouni, a Jiu-Jitsu black belt, about her powerful journey through pregnancy and postpartum as an athlete. We dove into how women's roles in Jiu-Jitsu have evolved, the critical importance of community support, and how training needs to adapt during pregnancy.

From physical and emotional adjustments to reconnecting with your body, Rose and I talked about the importance of gradual training, the link between breath and movement, and how to navigate the unique demands of competing postpartum.

We also addressed the common misconceptions about age and athleticism, and encouraged women to fully embrace their strength, capabilities, and evolution through motherhood and sport.

Happy 65th birthday to my amazing mom, Sharon! She is an inspiration to many and today she shares her story of finding fitness later in life (we’re talking 50s) after overcoming a challenging past of living in survival mode and working all the time to support me and my sister.

Lifting weights was not the norm for my mom’s generation and is only now becoming more of a mainstream activity. Sharon proves that athleticism does not have an expiration date and that you can start at any age to get strong and lift heavy. She just went viral for a video of her deadlifting 200lbs for 5... no big deal. We talk about how important and needed it is to be strong through not only motherhood, but grandmotherhood and as we age. She’s living her best life doing CrossFit, biking, hiking, skiing, Pickleball, and more.

I’m thrilled to kick off a brand-new series on pelvic health with one of my favorite pelvic health physical therapists, Mindy English. Together, we’re diving into the critical intersection of pelvic health and female athletes, breaking down what your mom (and probably your coach) never told you about your pelvic floor.

In this episode, we explore:

  • What the pelvic floor is and why it’s essential for athletic performance.
  • The importance of pelvic health across life stages: pregnancy, postpartum recovery, perimenopause, and menopause.
  • How breath, glutes, and movement patterns influence pelvic floor function.
  • Practical strategies to address symptoms like leaking, heaviness, and pain.
  • The surprising connection between constipation, diet, and pelvic health.

Follow the podcast for more episodes of this pelvic health series, releasing weekly.

Today I bring on my husband, Jared, who recently got his black belt in Jiu Jitsu. He has been doing BJJ for 20 years and has been a catalyst for our entire family joining. We chat about all of the various benefits personally, athletically, and mentally that our family has attained through participating in this sport, including aiding in Jared's law enforcement career.

Every time you do Jiu Jitsu, you learn something- there is an array of different skill levels, backgrounds, and experiences in the same room and it teaches you how to react in different controlled and uncontrolled situations and environments. BJJ has been a constant in our lives and will want it to continue to be there. We hope more families will choose to participate in it!

In this powerful and heartwarming episode, I sit down with two incredible P&PA (Pregnancy and Postpartum Athleticism) coaches — Katie Doerksen and Julie Chutter — to highlight how they’ve each built meaningful coaching practices while honoring their roles as mothers and leaders in their communities.

Katie, a mom of three from rural Alberta, opens up about her transition from kindergarten teacher to strength coach and co-founder of Girls Who Lead — a program blending leadership development and physical literacy for young girls. She shares how she’s helping the next generation understand their bodies and embrace movement in a way that builds confidence for life.

Julie, a mom of two based in Vancouver, shares how her background in spin and boxing led her to launching postpartum fitness classes — babies welcome — in a jiu-jitsu studio. We talk about building community, finding your rhythm during those chaotic early postpartum months, and how her business background has helped her thrive while staying present with her family.

We reflect on the real-life challenges of motherhood, the drive that comes with “athlete brain,” and the power of creating supportive, judgment-free spaces for women in every season of life.
