The PoliticsGirl Podcast

The PoliticsGirl Podcast

Meidas Media Network, Leigh McGowan

American Democracy is not promised to us and, with all the forces working against it, saving it will take a level of work most people aren’t ready for. The Politics Girl Podcast is here to give people a reason to care and a reason to fight. Our goal is to inspire. To instill in people a true understanding of what this country COULD be, if the right people were fighting for it, and what it WILL be if they don’t. It’s a political podcast yes, but more than that, it’s a podcast about America’s potential, where one passionate, and slightly mouthy, immigrant attempts to motivate the country to become what it promised to be but, so far, has yet to become. You’ll leave more knowledgeable, more engaged, and more sure that you, personally, can make a difference to the future of American democracy. Everyone’s got a little time for that right? Subscribe for new episodes every Tuesday. We’re in a fight for our country. We sure as hell better know what we’re fighting for. xo

Well, it’s here: Election Day. After this incredibly trying 10 years, and completely bananas election season, we made it. This is a BIG day and people are busy, so this is an abridged episode to tell you what to look for and expect today, and in the days and weeks to come.

The most important thing you can do right now is get people to the polls, not spread misinformation, and trust the system is ready this time. While some may prematurely claim victory and spread lies to sow doubt and seize power, at the end of the day, the results will be accurate and official, and the will of the people will ultimately prevail.

Conservatives are usually very committed to the idea of patriotic unity when it comes to foreign enemies, but this version of the Republican Party is different. The party of Reagan now seems closer to the party of Putin. Even an all out war being waged against freedom and democracy can’t seem to bring people to stand with the American president, if that president happens be Democrat. It’s almost as if Republicans have chosen to take the counter position, even if that means supporting Russia in a war with America. How did we get here, where is this party going and what can we do about it?

This 4th of July I thought we’d revisit why were are doing this podcast in the first place. What’s at stake and what why we need to care about this country and the direction it’s heading. It doesn’t matter if you feel like you’re too busy to care about politics. It doesn’t matter if you don’t think it matters, or if you think it’ll all just be fine. It won’t. It won’t all just be fine. The country is in deep trouble. And only by paying attention can we hope to solve it. We are standing on the tracks and the train is coming at us full speed. Our democracy, our freedom, everything we hold dear as Americans is in mortal peril. We save ourselves, or we perish. The choice is ours.

To keep democracy’s head above water in 2024 the Democrats need what’s called a trifecta - meaning the Presidency, the House and the Senate - and keeping the senate is going to be a tough slog because Democrats have what’s called a “bad map”. So today, instead of talking about the must win swing races we hear about all the time, we’re going to discuss two Senate races that almost no-one is paying attention to. Two Senate races practically no-one is investing in, because it’s assumed they’ve already been won by Republicans when the truth is they haven’t. American Democrats often function in this weird defeatist culture where we keep fighting over the same 6 states and seeding other states to Republicans with the assumption they’re lost and no Democrat can ever win there. It’s not fair to the people who have different opinions in those states. It’s not fair to the people who lose their rights thanks to Republican policies, and it’s not democratic. People should have a candidate to vote for, and that candidate should have the opportunity to win. So today’s episode includes two women, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (or DMP) from Florida and Katrina Christiansen from North Dakota. We’re going to hear their stories and remind ourselves that no state should be written off. That everybody deserves a chance to be represented in America and with so much on the line, we need to support every Democrat running. The party might not be focusing on these two races, but We the People, should be.

What’s Next America?

I still can’t exactly explain what happened with the 2024 election, but it does appear as if Trump and his dangerous, extremist allies have won. I’m a big believer in our institutions, but I also spent the past week trying to figure out how they could have all failed us so badly. I understand the sentiment to want to disengage. To find someone to blame. To point fingers and to close the door on working with anyone who isn’t in your immediate group, because you feel as if they’re the only people you can trust. But this idea that organization and community and goodness can’t stand up to any of this is fundamentally untrue. In many ways, America as we knew it might be over, but the ideas of democracy, human rights, civil rights, and knowing right from wrong, are not over, and if we want any sort of future, we can’t lay down now. That is exactly what these wanna-be authoritarians want us to do. And as far as I’m concerned, they don’t get

anything they want.

The mainstream media has let us down, so we need to support those doing independent work. The extremists have been able to shape the mindset of a fair amount of this nation because the far right invested in their voices. Give people like me a chance to fight back. The PoliticsGirl Podcast - What Can We Do About Guns? – PG:CC with Shannon Watts
play

04/26/22 • 47 min

Today’s PoliticsGirl: Candid Conversation is Shannon Watts, founder of Mom’s Demand Action, the largest grassroots group fighting gun violence in America. We talk about what it takes to make a difference, the power of grassroots action and the power of numbers. The majority of America wants common sense gun legislation. Why can’t we get it? Or can we? And what can you do to help? It’s a terrific conversation with a brilliant, passionate advocate. I think you’ll find yourself feeling inspired. Even if it’s just to further the conversation.

The PoliticsGirl Podcast - PG:CC with Lt. Colonel Alexander Vindman and Rachel Vindman
play

Alexander Vindman was the Director for European Affairs for the National Security Council under Donald Trump and the military officer who reported the now infamous phone call between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that led to the first of Donald Trump’s two impeachments. Vindman is a military expert in all things Ukraine/Russia and his wife Rachel, a popular writer and podcaster, fills in the civilian perspective. We talk the threat of war, Russia/NATO and America’s role in it all. Whether we end up with war, or fingers crossed, it can be avoided, Vindman wants us to take Russia’s threat of invasion seriously. As we both agree, democracies worldwide deserve to be protected. Autocrats are seeing how far they can push, and we have to show them we have the stomach to push back.

05/03/22 • 61 min

Education has become a hot button topic in America. From school closings due to the pandemic, to the war on masks, to the endless talk of CRT, “parent’s rights” and the banning of books and discussions of LGBTQ issues, the Republicans, never one to let a good crisis go to waste, have found a way to capitalize on the issue to get the results they want - the Democrats, not so much. So, today we’re going to talk about public education in America and how our politics are poised to completely reconfigure what it looks like depending on which road we take.

The PoliticsGirl Podcast - Abortion is Over: Overturning Freedom

After a copy of Justice Alito‘s draft majority opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health leaked to Politico. The draft, confirmed as authentic by Chief Justice Roberts, in very clear terms overturns both Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey fundamentally ending the constitutional right to abortion in America. This is a hinge point in the history of America and it can not be understated what a seismic shift this is for the court to overturn 50 years of legal precedent. We talk about what we know, what we should expect and what we can do.
