Today's topic is a sensitive one, childhood obesity and endocrine therapy. We also discuss binge eating disorder in this episode. During our research for this podcast, we discovered that there are experts who specialize in pediatric obesity as well as bariatric surgery for children. Many of us have benefited from GLP-1 medications such as Wegovy in treating obesity and improving our health. Since genetics plays a role in obesity, parents may wonder about their children's health. This is a challenging and controversial topic to discuss. Recently, Wegovy has been approved for treating obesity in children aged 12 and above. However, we should also consider the developmental and social implications of obesity in teenagers. We have the guidance of Dr. Karla Lester, a pediatric obesity specialist, to help us navigate this uncomfortable but necessary conversation.Dr. Karla Lester is a pediatrician, Diplomate of the ABOM, Certified Life Coach and founder of IME Community for teens and drkarlamd Metabolic Telehealth. Dr. Lester has dedicated her pediatric career to creating community solutions for children’s health. She is the author of “the magical everywhere”, “12 months of self-love superpowers journal” and the “Health Yourself” eBook for teens. Follow Dr. Karla on TikTok where she is known for disrupting weight stigma and bias in medicine and calling out the harms of diet culture. Dr. Karla has been interviewed by NBC News, Today.com, Newsweek, Buzzfeed News, Fox News, and ABC News about the harmful “Almond Mom” trend, Wegovy in Teens and the new AAP Clinical Practice Guidelines. She just launched the 80's Mixtape with dr. karla on kzum.org.
