Herbal Antibiotics and Gut Flora
The Plant Path
07/23/20 • 16 min
This week, we have a very interesting question that comes up from time to time in regard to whether an herb can actually work like an antibiotic and the possible benefits and risks in terms of using herbs to treat pathogenic infections.
This is a pretty relevant topic these days as we are in the midst of the COVID 19 situation. I’m seeing more and more people reaching out to plants as a way of strengthening their immune system and wanting to look at antiviral and antibacterial herbs and how to protect themselves and their family.
So we’re going to be talking about antiseptic or antimicrobial plants and weighing their benefits and risks.
We’ll also have a really excellent discussion in terms of the difference between how an herbal medicine works in contrast to how a lot of pharmaceutical medications, and specifically antibiotics, work in the human organism.

The Client Intake and 5 Health Determinants
The Plant Path
08/26/20 • 16 min
Root determinants are the big-picture, general things that we do each and every day that determine our relative state of health or lack of health. These are important things to know when working with clients, but sometimes they're overlooked by practitioners because they're considered basic and rudimentary and because there are so many other things to cover in a client intake.
So how do you do an intake in a way that makes sense . . . and so that you're not sitting there with a person all day long trying to get all the information that you need? How much time is generally recommended for a proper intake that accounts for the five root determinants of health? That’s what we cover this week.

The Different Types of Herbal Tonics
The Plant Path
08/20/20 • 18 min
The word “tonic” is frequently used in herbal medicine and in the alternative health world. We hear about health tonics, rejuvenative tonics, nutritive tonics, bitter tonics, and chi tonics. But what does “tonic” mean?
“Tonic” is a nebulous term and one of those terms in herbalism that can use some clarification to make sure that we're all on the same page when we say “tonic.” What's the difference between a tonic from the perspective of physiomedicalism versus the way the word “tonic” is used in Ayurvedic medicine or Chinese medicine?
This week’s post discusses the importance of knowing what we mean when we use certain terms in herbalism.

Diagnostic Differentials of Hot and Cold
The Plant Path
07/29/20 • 29 min
One of the primary elements of understanding the energetics or constitution of a person is temperature—whether someone runs really hot or runs really cold. Sometimes it can be a little confusing in terms of how you actually assess that. What are the core determining factors that you're looking at in a person to be able to tell whether they're hot or cold, either constitutionally or in their current symptomatic picture? This week we’re going to cover this dynamic that’s important to understand with every person that you work with.

Spagyrics: Ancient Medicine for the Modern World
The Plant Path
09/02/20 • 20 min
There's something that I've been thinking a lot about lately. I've been looking at the state of the world and everything that's been going on politically and culturally. With the fires that we've been having out here on the West Coast, it feels like things are heating up—literally—on planet earth right now. I've been thinking about human beings’ relationship to nature, our relationship to the earth, and the healing that is required of all of us right now, and I think the practice of herbal alchemy or spagyrics has great power and potency to bring healing to people.

The Human Body: Machine or Ecosystem
The Plant Path
12/29/20 • 15 min
Modern biomedicine tends to view the human body like a machine made up of multiple "gears." When something goes wrong, we simply need to fix the broken part. This mechanistic view of the body is significantly different from more traditional perspectives on our anatomy and physiology.
Central to the vitalist traditions of herbalism is the perspective that the body is a reflection of the natural world, a microcosm of nature- that it is an ecosystem.
The practice of true holistic herbalism is rooted in this perception of ecological physiology, which gives us a lens to directly match the energetics of the plants to the constitution of the person.

Having a connection to the herbal allies you work with is essential to truly accessing the deepest levels of healing offered by plant medicines. But how do you develop a relationship with these botanical beings?
In this episode, Asia Suler shares a guide for connecting to the primordial language of nature where we can learn from our plant allies. This connection to the natural world weaves us back into relationship with life. It opens the gateway to guide us in becoming instruments of blessing & healing in the world.
In Asia's own words,
“We live in a world that is full of medicine. In many origin stories its said that once all beings spoke the same language. And that it wasn't until we forgot this mother tongue that we lost our understanding of our place in the weave of all things, the knowledge of our own part to play in the healing.
This is an invitation to remember how to speak that ancient language. The language of interconnection. Of green magic. Of intuition and spirit. It is an invitation to learn how to communicate with the growing world and to rediscover your unique medicine.”
--------------------------------------ABOUT OUR GUEST - ASIA SULER: -------------------------------------- Asia Suler is a writer, teacher, mystic and herbalist who lives in the folds of the Blue ridge mountains. She is the creator and concoctress of One Willow Apothecaries, an Appalachian-grown company that offers lovingly handcrafted medicines and alchemical gateways of education. A unique combination of western and energetic herbalism, stone medicine, earth-centered shamanism and intuitive healing, Asia’s work includes private consultations as well as online programs and in-person retreats.
