The Perspective View - 5: MLK Day - His Truth, Their Truth, The Truth
play

Send us a text

Today is MLK Day which commemorates Civil Rights activist, Baptist preacher and Nobel Peace Prize winner Martin Luther King Jr. who was known for his activism against segregation and his advocacy for civil rights. Per the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the "MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community." While some see it this way others have not over the course of history. According to History.com, there was a fight for a holiday to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr.'s honor. The article states that "the suggestion that King—a Black minister who was vilified during his life and gunned down when he was just 39 years old—deserved a holiday was nothing short of incendiary." Today I want to talk about opinions and perspectives because there is always 3 sides: your truth, their truth, and the truth.

Dr. King Quotes Shared

  • "Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love." — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., "The Drum Major Instinct" Sermon.
  • "Even though it may be true that the law cannot change the heart, it can restrain the harvest. Even though it may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, it can restrain him from lynching me, and I think that’s pretty important also. And so, while the law may not change the hearts of men, it can and it does change the habits of men. And when you begin to change the habits of men, pretty soon the attitudes will be changed." — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., "The Other America" Address
  • "The time is always right to do what is right." — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Oberlin College Commencement Address
  • "A man dies when he refuses to stand up for that which is right. A man dies when he refuses to stand up for justice. A man dies when he refuses to take a stand for that which is true." — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Sermon in Selma, Alabama

The Perspective View - 4: The Fortitude Collective: Unbossed but Bothered
play

12/23/22 • 56 min

Send us a text

Join us for an exclusive interview with the founders of The Fortitude Collective whose mission is to create a space for the next generation of black and brown women that reaffirms, supports, and encourages them to “bring their chair” to every space they occupy. Their vision is for every black and brown woman to own their space in the world and of course "bring their chair." "Bringing their chair" as they so eloquently put it is based on the quote by their late Soror, Shirley Chisholm, who said "if they don't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair." Congresswoman Chisholm knew all about this as the first Black congresswoman (1968), representing New York State in the U.S. House of Representatives for seven terms. Similarly, each of these ladies are blazing trails in their fields, from education to entrepreneurship these Sorors of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. are definitely a collective force, leading within and throughout their communities. Representation in our workplaces, boardrooms and elected offices is necessary and the ladies of The Fortitude Collective are ensuring this shift happens now. They are even gearing up to host their first in-person conference, "Unbossed but Bothered," an experience to show how important diversity and inclusion is for women of color. In the latest episode of The Perspective View, we delve into a fundamental question that resonates far beyond the boundaries of healthcare: Would you rather be right or precise?

Drawing from a deeply personal experience in the healthcare system, our host shares a compelling narrative that underscores the critical importance of effective communication between patients and providers. Through meticulous attention to detail and active listening, a seemingly routine medical visit transformed into a pivotal moment that ultimately led to life-saving interventions.

This episode unpacks the implications of prioritizing precision over asserting expertise, challenging the notion that being "right" always trumps all. We explore the broader ramifications of this mindset, particularly within marginalized communities who often bear the brunt of systemic healthcare disparities.

From alarming maternal health statistics to personal anecdotes that drove the creation of our host's podcasts, Confidence Restored and The Perspective View, we confront the harsh realities of healthcare inequality and the urgent need for change.

But amidst these challenges, we find hope in the power of collaboration and dialogue. By embracing a mindset of precision, characterized by active listening and a willingness to consider diverse perspectives, we unlock the potential for better outcomes and a more equitable healthcare system.

Join us as we navigate the complexities of healthcare and beyond, challenging conventional wisdom and advocating for a future where precision reigns supreme, and every voice is heard.
