play

09/23/21 • 59 min

June 18, 1977. Tucson, Arizona. After disappearing from his family for eleven days, the body of escrow company owner Charles “Chuck” Morgan is found outside his vehicle in the desert. He has been shot in the back of the head and is carrying a two-dollar bill which appears to have a coded message written on it. Even though Chuck had allegedly survived a kidnapping ordeal three months earlier and there are of lot suspicious things surrounding his death, the official police ruling is suicide. Thirteen years later, a Phoenix man named Doug Johnston is shot to death... but was his murder actually intended for a journalist investigating Chuck Morgan’s case? On this week’s episode of “The Path Went Chilly”, we examine two cases featured on “Unsolved Mysteries” which may be linked together by a frightening conspiracy.

November 24, 1956. LaPlace, Louisiana. 46-year old married family man Thomas Hotard and 31-year old single mother Audrey Moate meet up to continue their secret affair, which they have been carrying on for years. The following day, Thomas’ body is discovered inside his vehicle at a remote swamp area with a shotgun blast to the back of his head. Even though most of Audrey’s clothing has been left behind, she is nowhere to be found and a search of the area turns up no trace of her. Two decades later, a dying man confesses that his common-law wife was responsible for murdering the couple and that he helped dispose of Audrey’s body, but no evidence is found to support his story. This week’s episode of “The Path Went Chilly” covers a “lovers’ lane” murder from the Louisiana bayou involving one victim who has still never been found.

10/06/22 • 54 min

September 13, 1991. Burbank, California. 37-year old Tom Roche makes plans to meet his spouse, Barbara Rondeau, for lunch, but never shows up. When Barbara returns to their apartment, she discovers that the front door is unlocked and Tom is missing. Six days later, Barbara receives an envelope containing some of Tom’s personal items, along with an anonymous confession letter to his murder. While there is some speculation that Tom could have staged his own disappearance, some of his skeletal remains and personal possessions are eventually discovered in a remote area 500 miles away. Tom’s cause of death is determined to be a gunshot wound, but the circumstances of how he wound up dead remain unclear. Was Tom Roche abducted and murdered? Was the anonymous confession letter actually written by his killer? We will explore a number of these unanswered questions as we cover a very baffling case on this week’s episode of “The Path Went Chilly”.

May 12, 2000. The South Pole, Antarctica. While working at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, 32-year old Australian astrophysicist Rodney Marks becomes seriously ill before he dies. Rodney’s death is initially assumed to be natural causes, but when his body is transported to New Zealand months later, an autopsy reveals that he died from acute methanol poisoning. The New Zealand Police attempt to launch an investigation, but run into jurisdictional issues and since Rodney’s American-based employers prove to be uncooperative, a coronial inquest fails to reach a conclusion about how Rodney died. Was Rodney Marks’ methanol poisoning a tragic accident or was he the victim of foul play? We shall explore all the different possibilities on this week’s episode of “The Path Went Chilly”, which covers our very first mystery from Antarctica.

September 20, 1994. Oak Grove, Kentucky. 22-year old Candy Belt and 18-year old Gloria Ross are found dead at the massage parlour where they work, as they have both been shot in the head and had their throats slashed. It turns out the business was a front for a brothel and suspicion is directed towards a local police officer named Ed Carter, who is alleged to have been involved in a dispute with the massage parlour’s owner. Nineteen years later, Carter and two other suspects are charged for their roles in the murders, but since DNA evidence from the crime scene does not match any of them, they all wind up being acquitted at trial. On this week’s episode of “The Path Went Chilly”, we explore a brutal double homicide surrounded by scandal and allegations of police corruption which is often referred to as “The Kentucky Bordello Murders”.

The following morning, Michele’s abandoned minivan is discovered on a road next to the driveway of her family’s rural property. Years later, Cal is charged with Michele’s murder and found guilty, but the case would undergo four trials and two overturned convictions while the defence points the finger at alternate suspects. Cal is finally acquitted of the crime in 2016, but Michele’s body is never found. Was Cal Harris actually responsible for his wife’s disappearance, or did someone else murder Michele? July 10, 1958. Monterey County, California. 26-year old First Lieutenant Paul Whipkey leaves Fort Ord, the Army base where he is stationed. When he fails to return, he is declared AWOL before being declared a “deserter” 30 days later. Five weeks after he went missing, Whipkey’s abandoned car is discovered nearly 500 miles away in a remote section of Death Valley. Since Whipkey’s body cannot be found, the Army believes he suffered a mental breakdown and wandered into the desert and died. However, Whipkey’s family discovers troubling discrepancies to make them suspect the Army staged his disappearance. In 1982, Whipkey’s status is officially changed to “died in the line of duty”, but he is never found and the full truth about what happened to him is not revealed. Could Whipkey have been recruited by the CIA and sent on a secret mission? Or was his disappearance connected to a previous assignment involving atomic testing? We shall explore all the different potential scenarios as we cover a bizarre military-themed mystery on this week’s edition on “The Path Went Chilly”.
