What do a toothpick, a scarf and a banana peel have in common? This might sound like the beginning to a bad joke, but in this episode Jennie and Dianne share the stories of three artists who died under unusual circumstances. You will be introduced to writer and poet Sherwood Anderson, the mother of modern dance, Isadora Duncan, and Roland Reed whose photography helped the world to better understand the indigenous peoples of the American plains and the Southwest. All three lived adventurous lives and all three died Ordinary Extraordinary Deaths.

Children in many parts of the U.S. gathered their supplies and donned their backpacks, as they headed back to school. Many more will be doing so in the next coming weeks both here in the U.S. and around the world as summer comes to its official end. This inspired us to share the stories of some teachers from the past and some of the challenges they faced. Join us for the Ordinary Extraordinary stories of two teachers who impacted their students and the communities in which they worked. First, we meet Sister Blandina who helped tame the wild west through her gentle ways as both a school teacher and a nurse. She even gained the trust and respect of the notorious Billy the Kid! Next, we travel south to the Appalachian mountains to recall the fond memories of Leonora Whitaker Wood and her time spent teaching in a mission school off the beaten path. Her stories inspired her daughter Catherine Marshall, to publish the novel Christy, based on many of her experiences as a teacher in the early 1900s.

Jennie and Dianne kick off 2023 by answering many questions posed by their listeners over the course of the previous year. They begin this two-part episode by covering the legal definition of an abandoned cemetery and how this definition determines either the survival or removal of a burial ground. They delve in to what to do should you accidentally excavate a burial site, especially if that site belongs to Native Americans. And finally, they cover the topic of cemetery grants including those provided by the Veterans Association (VA) to ensure that US military veterans receive a respectful burial.

In this episode Dianne and Jennie learn about one man's heartache and how it led him to build a magnificent mausoleum and gorgeous Victorian mansion. John Bowman built his wealth owning several tanneries and selling leather goods to the Union army during the civil war. However, his true happiness was the love he showered on his wife and daughters and when he lost them he he built the magnificent Laurel Glen Mausoleum and Laurel Hall right across the street in Cuttingsville, Vermont. The second story in this episode revolves around Rebecca Nurse and the Nurse family cemetery located in Danvers, Massachusetts. Rebecca Nurse was one of 19 victims hanged during the Salem witchcraft hysteria of 1692 and her home is the only one left where a victim of the witch trials actually lived. Included on that property is a family cemetery where it has been rumored for nearly 300 years that Rebecca may be buried. Come along as we explore these Ordinary Extraordinary stories in this episode of the Ordinary Extraordinary Cemetery podcast.

How have the people of Venice, Italy buried their dead over the centuries? Founded in the 5th century and spread over 118 small islands, Venice became a major maritime power in the 10th century. Some of these Ordinary Extraordinary Venetians were buried in a crypt beneath Basilica di San Marco, while others were relegated to burial grounds on two different islands; the Island of San Michele and the Jewish cemetery on the Lido. Join Jennie and Dianne as they delve into the history of Venice and and their burial grounds.
