The Nice Veins Bro Podcast - Ep 24 - Change your mind about “PASSIVE INCOME” 🤯
play

06/04/23 • 21 min

At some point or another, everyone heard this piece of advice: “Do what your passionate about and you’ll never have to work another day in your life!” I always rolled my eyes when I heard that. It always made me wonder if work is something we should be trying to escape...

In this episode, my nurse wife, Lexa, and optometrist brother, Dr. Anthony Cortes, join me to discuss a topic that many people struggle with: WORK! Have you noticed that in society, work is often perceived as a burden? This is the toxic idea that work is merely an oppressive means to make a living. While that may be true about some kinds of work, this isn’t true about work as a whole. Maybe we confuse WORK with JOBS. Those are not interchangeable! Because of this misconception about work being oppressive, people spend their whole life depressed about their current circumstance, looking toward retirement as their only saving grace. Others spend hundreds of dollars on courses from online gurus that promise fully passive income without putting much effort in.

However, the Bible takes a much different approach to work. We discover that God assigned it to us even at creation as a blessing!

“All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.” Proverbs 14:23 NIV

“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” Genesis 2:15 NIV

Of course, we’re not talking about unproductive labor or fruitless busy work, but rather a means to bring profit and take care of people and world around us. By reframing the way we think about work, we can find purpose and fulfillment in our careers!

Be a positive force and influence within healthcare and society.

Your comfort zone will kill you!
I was recently reading a book that someone from my church wrote called "Power to Thrive" and was taken back by the concept that only 2% of the population ACTUALLY thrives. The author of the book, Richard Cavaness, stated that 98% of people do NOT chase after a life outside of their comfort zone.
In this podcast, my Optometrist brother and I explore how this mindset can dramatically change your life and why it's important that people in healthcare adopt this mindset shift in their day-to-day.

The Nice Veins Bro Podcast - Ep 40 - The FUTURE OF BIRTH: Artificial wombs already a thing?! 😨
play

10/01/23 • 23 min

Ever imagined the reality of a world where babies can be nurtured and brought to life outside a human womb? Well, brace yourself as we unpack this bold, and perhaps unnerving reality. We shine a light on the science-fiction-like concept of artificial wombs and how they could revolutionize neonatal care. We navigate the intricate phases of testing this technology, weighing its potential rewards against the inherent risks, and contemplate its role in saving the lives of premature babies.
As we tread further into this futuristic landscape, we're compelled to confront the ethical dilemmas that loom with this technology. What does this mean for cost-driven access? How might it modify the traditional sentiments attached to pregnancy and childbirth? And, perhaps most importantly, how might the emotional and psychological well-being of an infant be affected if they are grown in labs instead of a mother's womb?

The Nice Veins Bro Podcast - Ep 35 - Why healthcare is broken 🏥 💔 & how to FIX IT
play

08/21/23 • 13 min

In this episode I discuss the broken healthcare system and how we can take responsibility to make positive change. I address common complaints about the healthcare industry, such as lack of access to medical are and discrimination, and encourage listeners to focus on what they can control and take action in their own areas of influence. The episode emphasizes personal responsibility and growth, building strong relationships, setting goals, and accepting feedback. Here are the main takeaways on how we can practically work on ourselves so we are better prepared to address the large issues within the broken US healthcare system: 1. Start by acknowledging your own flaws and areas where you can improve 2. Focus on what you can control and take action in those areas 3. Take the initiative to learn and grow in your field 4. Build strong relationships with colleagues and supervisors, first by listening and then patiently communicating effectively 5. Set goals for yourself and hold yourself accountable by plugging into a community that has people with varied opinions 6. Always accept feedback as a healthy opportunity to grow rather than an attack. Do not be afraid of correction!

Healthcare workers demand their worth!!! Check out the latest episode of the Nice Veins Bro Podcast where we discuss the historic 75,000+ employee strike and tentative deal reached by Kaiser Permanente and a coalition of unions. The largest healthcare labor dispute in U.S. history concluded with a new contract that addresses staffing shortages and includes 21% wage increases over the next four years. Tens of thousands of nurses, ER technicians, and pharmacists participated in the three-day strike, highlighting the impact of understaffing on patient care. The involvement of U.S. Labor Secretary Julie Su was credited in helping to reach the agreement. Lexa and I also discuss all about labor unions within healthcare - are they good or bad? At what cost did Kaiser succumb to the bargaining table? Who's going to pay for all this?

In this episode, Dunn and Kianna share their experience at Wildwood Lifestyle Center, where they sought care to address diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia with natural remedies. They share their experience, including the schedule, treatment, classes, and other services they received at the center. One of the treatments to address Dunn's high blood pressure was a certain kind of herbal tea! We also discuss the importance of keeping a balance between conventional and alternative medicine, which are too often pitted against each other. This balanced approach is often referred to as complementary and integrative medicine. As patient advocates, we must emphasize the significance of treating body, mind, and spirit in medicine! Keeping a wholistic approach will always benefit patients in the long run.

Are you tired of feeling down and unhappy? Just stop being sad! Sounds easy enough, right? If happiness is a choice, why doesn’t everyone just CHOOSE to be happy and why doesn’t that good feeling last all day, every day?
While we can’t choose to avoid negative emotions, our happy or sad attitudes are a result of derived feelings influenced by our thoughts. If you’re interested in reading an article that explains the difference between emotions and feelings, check it out here: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-pleasure-is-all-yours/202202/the-important-difference-between-emotions-and-feelings
In this podcast, I reveal daily habits that can contribute to happiness, such as starting the day right by getting enough rest, practicing gratitude throughout the day, eating healthy meals, and creating time for exercise and relaxation. Remember to include hobbies that fill you with joy and satisfaction! Moreover, I emphasize the importance of connecting with people and opportunities that uplift and build you up.
One of the best recommendations I could ever give is to follow the command found in Philippians 4:4-8, which encourages us to think about things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy. In a world where negativity seems to be so prevalent, it's important to focus on the positive and beautiful aspects of our lives. Choose joy by changing your mindset and attitude, and take action to improve your daily habits to stay happy all day long. It’s possible!

The Nice Veins Bro Podcast - Ep 22 - Nurses FIRED for TikTok Video ...AGAIN! 😳
play

04/30/23 • 23 min

Should nurses really be posting TikToks of themselves at work?
In this episode, my wife and I talk about an explicit video Oschner Health staff uploaded on TikTok. In the video, nurses are seen lip syncing, twerking, and acting out sexual scenarios to ‘Sl*t Me Out’ NLE Choppa. Staff members are noticeably filmed in their scrubs with their facility badges on clear display!
Needless to say, it garnered lots of attention... with some calling for their licenses to be revoked! What do YOU think? Did these nurses take it too far? Do they really deserve to be fired?
After weighing in, Lexa and I also give our personal advice on how healthcare professionals should handle social media.

The Nice Veins Bro Podcast - Ep 21 - This daily habit will change your life
play

04/17/23 • 26 min

Establishing a consistent morning routine can have a profound impact on our life because it sets the tone for the whole day!
One of the best habits to implement in the morning is waking up earlier. When you wake up early, you have more time to yourself before the day's demands start taking over. This extra time can be used to exercise, meditate, or work on a personal project. By starting your day with a sense of accomplishment, you are more likely to continue being productive throughout the day - this is why you should always try to start with something simple, like MAKING YOUR BED!
Morning routines can also have a positive impact on your mental health. Incorporating mindfulness practices into your morning routine, such as meditation or prayer, can help reduce stress and anxiety. Taking time for yourself in the morning can also help you feel more centered and grounded, allowing you to face the challenges of the day with a clear and focused mind.
Remember, it's never too late to start a morning routine. Start small and work your way up to a routine that works for you, and watch as your life transforms for the better.

The Nice Veins Bro Podcast - Ep 17 - Miscommunication can KILL people 😵
play

02/20/23 • 30 min

There's a quote from Tony Robbins that says "The way we communicate with others and with ourselves ultimately determines the quality of our lives." This obviously means that the way we communicate is of utmost importance! Similarly, the Bible has two incredible verses I would like to share with you:
"The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit." Proverbs 15:4
"But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgement for every empty word they have spoken." Matthew 12:36
A simple Google search about how to improve your communication will bring up loads of great insight but here are my 6 favorite tips:

  1. Active Listening (YES, listening is communicating)
  2. Ask questions, repeat to ensure understanding
  3. Practice clear, concise wordage (agree on terms and definitions)
  4. Use a respectful tone and mannerism
  5. Be careful of your body language
  6. Be open to feedback, criticism, and disagreement

Some real, practical examples where we can use these techniques are...
During job interviews, talking to doctors or anyone else on the multidisciplinary team, taking/giving shift report, during emergency situations like codes or even for palliative moments like talking to family members as their loved one passes.
Successful communication doesn't just mean getting something off your chest. It means saying something in a way that the person receiving it will be able to understand and digest it.
Be a positive force within healthcare and society.
