The Next Tuesday Podcast - 057: What's Past the Question Mark? w/Kelli Lemon
play

05/29/18 • 52 min

Have you ever stopped to wonder what's beyond the question mark? Kelli Lemon, The Social Connector of RVA, explains to us how she's currently building her business, The Urban Hang Suite, that stemmed from a talk she gave addressing the topic of mystery. She explains to us how she literally spoke her dream into the world and has watched it manifest in recent months.

Kelli, who is the host of the awesome podcast Coffee w/Strangers, a regular voice on Kiss FM, a pop-up party co-host, the owner of the soon-to-be day lounge Urban Hang Suite, and Richmonder extraordinaire talks to us about all things life, career, brand, mental health, community, and how she's learned to be involved with only things she loves. She lets us in on some Coffee with Strangers secrets and explains how it all got going and how it's altered her path. If you know of Kelli, did you know that her career started at Virginia Commonwealth University and she stumbled upon radio? She shares her journey of how she's arrived where she is today.

We also learn what it's like to be both your brand and the person behind the brand, as Kelli explains she's two different people. We're honored to speak with the person behind the brand and find out what Kelli's favorite thing is about Richmond, her greatest hope for her city, and what she wants for her future. Tune in!

If you're in need of some inspiration, this is your episode! We're chatting with Christina Dick, Founder of the Public Relations Agency: Tiramisu for Breakfast and Adjunct Professor of Advertising at VCU. Christina's positive energy and plethora of #truthbombs will make you feel like you can tackle everything on your to-do list.

This conversation is full of magic like the power of being underestimated and sliding in under the radar, the frustrations of feeling limited within a role and the freedom and creativity that emerges when creating your own rules in your own business, framing all experiences as opportunities to learn and grow, and highlighting the positives of social media. Christina shares her biggest fears jumping into entrepreneurship and the gifts and surprises that have come from being her own boss.

We learn why it's important to "obsess over your customers and not your competitors", that "everyone you meet knows something you don't", and that "you can always lose something you have, but you can never lose something you are". Christina shares her down to earth approach on business and encourages us to consider our intention behind every action and interaction. Tune in now!

We're back with Bethany Frazier of MavenMade (Episode 3) to talk her other biz YOU ARE VENUS, along with the other half of this sacred femininity duo: Brittany Johnson. Prepare to peek behind the curtain as Bethany + Brittany get real with us about their journeys to their true selves. They talk about exploring: intuitive gifts, energy, chakras, and crystals; via their real life struggles + transitions: cancer, divorce, breakups + coming out.

They've supported one another in their friendship + partnership to find the answers to the tough questions like, "what do shitty things tell you?" and "how do you shift?" to make things more positive. Through their love acceptance of one another's unfolding, they've created a platform:: You Are Venus:: to create a web of support to empower women to shed the bullshit and get grounded and real with one another. Now, 4 retreats in, Bethany + Brittany candidly speak about expanding their vision, creating more energy + capital to support themselves, and how to build a business by being heart-centered rather than ego-driven.

Together, the 4 of us ((Care, Suz, Britt, + Bethany)) mirror one another and show all of the yin-yang, right brain - left brain, practical and spiritual ways of being. We contemplate the history behind the word "woo-woo", how labels constrict our ways of being, and learning from our experiences to do better. Again, we discuss authenticity as the energy of the future and things like aliens and mushrooms. Basically, YOU ARE WHAT YOU SEEK and everything is on it's way. Not sure? LISTEN IN!!! And hear what's coming our way in the next few weeks for the Next Tues Podcast + Care's Engaged Legal. LASTLY -- check out Bethany + Brittany's latest and greatest creation::: INDIGO FEST::: 9/22 - 9/24 a Conscious Music Festival in Oklahoma!!! Get your tickets today!

We're getting SAUCEY at the brunch table with Christine Greenberg, Owner + HBIC of Wood Grain + Lace and Urban Set Bride (best RVA bridal shop 3 years running - NBD), and the founder of Boss Babes RVA. Christine holds nothing back as she takes us through her personal and professional journey to being the #bossbabe, #bossmom, #weddingboss she is. Christine lets us in on what it's like to enter the wedding planning business and leave a steady paycheck (terrifying), the dance of running a bridal gown business with your Mom, and how to scale a business learning to become a leader rather than a manager. We also learn about the universe's push propelling Christine into the Wedding biz when she plans a wedding for an instant friend after her boyfriend's incurable brain tumor. What?!

This ep. is packed with the biz pieces like how not to go poor in your business, how to keep brides - bridezillas and "bridechillas" alike - calm using fancy words like "organic", "seamless", and "effortless." And how collaborating with women is the best and how to own your presence to keep old men in check. On the flip side, Christine is real with us about her journey from her hoe days to to her marriage, and learning how to chill out when her son just wants to be held. We're ready for her collection of wedding stories in a coffee table book (like a raccoon trying to eat a bridesmaid's dress) AND to see her rose gold trashcan in Urban Set.

Also -- we are excited to announce we have our first AFFILIATE!!! Use promo code TUESDAY at saucey.com for 10% off ALCOHOL SHIPPED TO YOUR DOOR. Care + Suz are so excited to share the women behind the Girls Girls Girls extravaganza taking over #RVA and beyond. This week we chat with the Girls ^3 masterminds, Emily Herr + Sarah Apple, who took a blank wall inspired by Strip Signs and are turning one into many from Richmond to Burlington, VT via an epic adventure in a 3500 lb. commercial vehicle. Relying on the kindness of strangers, these mural painters and illustrators are sharing the celebration of girls + women to be a "positive force in the world." Listen to the layers of this project that are uncovered as Emily and Sarah begin to take steps to explore their intention to normalize and represent all images of women up and down the East Coast.

Gems in this episode include a comparison of Emily's mobile art studio, or "adventure machine," to the van in the television show Breaking Bad and Caroline's "baby killing" metaphor regarding the creative process. On a more biz related note - this episode is all about the process - that uncomfortable space of trial and error, exploration and experimentation. We touch over sponsorships, the differentiation between a sign and a mural, exemplifying the purposeful pivot, and the magical idea generators - the moral support of beer + coffee.

These girls are awesome and creating community and connection around the inspiring murals showcasing all kinds of girls like you and us! They vulnerably share their craft and dreams and allow you to be a part of their journey. Plus, find out -- is this a feminist thing? Or isn't it? TBD! Thanks for listening in!
