Episode 77: Interview with Dr. Kate Umble Smucker

The Musician's Guide To Being Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise

In this genuine conversation with Karen, Kate recalls what it was like navigating the transition from the comfort of school life to the struggles of being a young, single artist in debt with a number of “almost” jobs in front of her. Her curiosity in school led to many of her early, diverse opportunities as a pit musician, big band leader and player, orchestral performer, and private teacher in and around Lancaster. When her husband found an opportunity to work for the minds at Sesame Street, they quickly found themselves uprooting and moving to New York, where Kate would begin teaching at the Grace Church School, performing with Calliope Brass, and more.

Kate also had the opportunity to serve as the wellness expert and clinician for the Body, Mind, Spirit workshop led by Jeremy Wilson and Karen Cubides. Here, she was able to put some of the principles from her yoga training and personal practice into context for dozens of up and coming performers and educators, discussing ideas of movement, meditation, and breathwork. You’ll hear Kate and Karen demystify these ideas and more as they break down the barriers around wellness in their conversation. If you’re curious about adaptability, meditation for musicians, and breaking out of the rat-race headspace, you won’t want to miss this interview.
