The Musician Toolkit with David Lane - Revisiting the Importance of Talent in Music

Revisiting the Importance of Talent in Music

If you want to succeed in music, how important is talent? I shared a strong opinion on this way back on Episode 3 of this podcast. I've thought about it a lot since then, and have since changed my mind about some of it but still feel strongly on other points. With the 2024 Summer Olympics being a recent event that featured a lot of developed talent, I thought this would be a great time to revisit the topic. Talent is a real trait that has a real say in what opportunities there are for you in music, but how much? Also, listen to why using "You're so talented" as a compliment to young performers is potentially harmful.

It's such an easy thing to do. You're impressed with a great musician or other artist, and you talk about or get to compliment them, and out comes this word that seemingly everyone uses as a 1st choice...and that word is "talented". Talent is certainly worth having, but it shouldn't be THE quality that gets the praise. To quote the title of Geoff Colvin's wonderful book, Talent is Overrated, it's not because talent has no value, but as a tool it is VERY limited. As a first choice of compliment, especially to a student musician, there is the possibility of hugely negative consequences, as David Lane explains in this episode

Has the label "talented" been a roadblock for you or someone you know? If you'd like to share a brief account of your story, you can at https://www.speakpipe.com/MusicianToolkit

Problem 1: Not having long-term goals puts us in the trap of focusing only on day-by-day or week-by-week tasks. We get things done, but we're not moving towards anything bigger.

Problem 2: Long-term goals can be overwhelming, exhausting our patience and our discipline. Something that's going to take 2 or 3 years or longer can be very tough for staying the course.

Solution: Quarterly planning and review!

In this episode, David Lane shares why he loves quarterly goals and how they hit that sweet spot of short term productivity and long term ambition. He also explains the critical addition of the review process at the end of each quarter so that you're constantly learning from both your successes and your failures to always be creating better goals. There are also suggestions of how you can implement this system as a musician. Check out this episode right way, just before Q3 begins, and plan out a great 3 months!
