Forensics with Laura Sudkamp & Marci Adkins | Part 3 of 3
The Murder Police Podcast
07/20/21 • 20 min
So, you want to be a crime scene specialist? A forensic scientist? A master of evidence procurement and analysis?
This is for you. Even if you are not career searching, a True Crime fan will want to hear what this fascinating world is, by those that live there.
For this 3-part mini-series, David and Wendy sat down with two forensic scientists from Kentucky State Police Forensic Services for a candid conversation that have made careers at the lab: Division Director Laura Sudkamp and Forensic Scientist Specialist II Marci Adkins.
One of the big highlights of David’s time in homicide, was working with the professionals at Kentucky State Police Forensic Services. Everyone was always willing to go above and beyond. As a detective, everyone knew these people were clearly on the team. They were educational (yes, they would tell you whether you were in the right direction), and really took the protocols seriously to safely fact-find.
As with any REAL team, many detectives and scientists got to know one another over the years, and instead of a just a name and a signature on a lab report, detectives knew just who they were.
Unlike TV and Hollywood fantasy, the field of forensics is very real, and extremely dedicated people make careers in the industry; quietly seeking the truth and providing advocacy for crime victims.
These episodes are for the true True Crime fan, that is interested in the mechanics of murder investigation, not just the salacious details of a murder. For those that are interested in entering the world of forensics as a career, this is a must listen! And as always on The Murder Police Podcast, we explore the personal side of this work, not just the technical.
So, take a listen and make sure you tell your friends about these episodes, especially if they are interested in making a difference through an amazing career!

The Murder of Bobbie Jean Blacka | Mini-Series | Part 1 of 4
The Murder Police Podcast
03/23/21 • 32 min
On May 8, 2012, 38 year old Bobbie Jean Blacka was found unresponsive in an apartment located in Keyser West Virginia. Bobbie Jean was pronounced dead at the scene. Within several hours, it was determined she likely died of a heroin drug overdose. Another overdose in a state that was seeing more overdoses than just about anywhere else.
Was this “just another overdose” as we callously say these days?
Maybe not. Listen to then-officer Bobby McKone describe an investigation that occurred after he responded and his experience and intuition told him “something is just not right”; like so many investigators discover.
This mini-series is not only a commemoration of Bobbie Jean Blacka, a young woman battling addiction like so many other people, who lost her life and the opportunity to recover; it is a deep conversation about opiate addiction from the side of law enforcement, a snap-shot in 2014, in a state plagued with some of the highest mortality rates due to overdoses.
You will also hear how these complex investigations are handled in smaller police departments, where specialization does not exists. This is where the detective’s heart and hunger are the driving force behind justice for crime victims. This is the real world for many police officers in the United States and for that matter, around the world.
As a Murder Police Podcast mini-series, each of the 4 episodes will publish weekly, instead of the every-other-Tuesday schedule. Here are the dates. Make sure you have subscribed to The Murder Police Podcast and set your player to automatically download new episodes so you get them right away.

The Murder of Angela Owens Wooldridge | Part 3 of 3
The Murder Police Podcast
03/22/22 • 27 min
Sometimes, this thing called reality crashes into our lives.
In February 2022, Wendy lost her literal best friend, Angie, to a Domestic Violence murder in Nicholasville Kentucky. Angie was shot to death by her husband, who turned the gun on himself and died at his own hand.
The thing about True Crime is that it is alluring for so many reasons. Deciphering case details, maybe even asking ‘what I would do if I was a detective’, are part of a natural human curiosity. For most enthusiast, there is also the age old battle of wrapping our minds around the why when one human kills another. What is evil? But, when it comes to close to home...
Over three episodes, Wendy tells a story that she never in a million years though she would be telling, much less, as a True Crime podcast host. She does though, and lifts Angie up for people to know, talks about the red flags that we see in domestic violence cases and the helplessness that friends might feel as things spiral downward as they watch.
If you are a victim of any type of domestic violence abuse, get help right away. Your feeling of helplessness, lack of power, hopelessness and depression were likely cultivated in you by your abuser. There are answers. There are strategies. There is a better way.
If you have a friend in this situation; be the friend they need.

The Murder of Megan Liebengood | Part 2 of 4
The Murder Police Podcast
08/24/21 • 30 min
On Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, 18-year-old newlywed Megan Nicole Liebengood, was callously shot to death in the parking lot of her apartment home in Lexington Kentucky.
Megan was simply unloading groceries from her car, when she was accosted by suspects who later admitted, they were out to “hit a lick”: street slang for robbing someone. Somewhere around 10:30 PM they found their mark. A diminutive young woman. Easy prey for cowards.
This 4-part mini-series is a heart felt conversation with Homicide Investigators Chris Schoonover and Rob Wilson. Chris and Rob will carry you through a brisk but highly detailed investigation that cleared the murder case. You will hear how they made their strategic and tactical decisions, using skills sets that you may not have heard of before to bring this case to an ethical and legal conclusion. More importantly, you will hear how this demonic, brutal, and senseless crime impacted those assigned to investigate it.
Note: The listener will notice that the detectives did not name the suspects. Though they were juveniles prosecuted and convicted as adults, The Murder Police Podcast believes in protecting the record of these cleared cases and in cases like these, having the investigators not name the suspects is part of that effort.
That said, links to several news stories and court records found on our Show Notes at murderpolicepodcast.com report that Michael Merrall Shepherd, Robert Benton Miller and Patrick Lewis Cook, are the ones responsible for her death.

Part 2 of a 2-part series, offers then Sergeant Dan Gibbons, who was the sergeant of the Homicide Unit with the Lexington Police Department in 1994, describing the investigation from the supervisor’s perspective. In this last installment for the case, a suspect is identified and prosecuted in the case, but that is not the only justice the DiGiuro family received.
