The Lexington Triple Homicide: Who Really Pulled the Trigger? | Part 3 of 3
The Murder Police Podcast
04/22/25 • 29 min
A split jury verdict that defied expectations. Three men dead. A defendant who confessed but later died by suicide in prison. The Lexington Triple Homicide conclusion reveals the devastating consequences when drug culture, family violence, and opportunity collide.
The detective's theory makes disturbing sense – victims who crashed hard after a "420 party" would have been unconscious when the shooter entered, explaining why neither woke when the other was killed. "People who do cocaine take the edge off with things that shut them down. It's how a lot of people actually die—they take speedballs," explains the James York from The 13th Floor Podcast, piecing together the timeline of this tragedy.
What unfolds in the courtroom proves equally compelling. The Department of Public Advocacy mounted an extraordinary defense, scrutinizing every piece of evidence through rarely-seen chain of custody hearings. Despite overwhelming ballistic evidence connecting all three murders to the same .38 caliber revolver found with Ricky, the jury delivered a stunning split decision – guilty of killing two victims but not his stepfather.
This case forces us to confront difficult questions about justice, extreme emotional disturbance as a legal defense, and the devastating ripple effects of violence. When Ricky later took his own life in prison, the tragedy claimed yet another victim, leaving his mother to grieve both her husband and son. His child would grow up without answers, and multiple families would be forever changed.
The weight of serving on a capital murder jury, the psychology behind split verdicts, and the lasting trauma on investigators and families alike – this episode explores it all while honoring the victims whose lives were cut tragically short. Listen now to understand what really happened in this haunting Kentucky case where everyone involved lost something precious.

Who Killed Letha? With Beverly Gumm & Patches Rutherford | Part 1 of 2
The Murder Police Podcast
06/25/24 • 24 min
In the latest episode of the Murder Police Podcast, we delve into the heart-wrenching story of Letha, a young woman whose life was cut tragically short. This episode stands out not only for its compelling narrative but also for the emotional depth provided by our special guests, Miss Beverly and Patches, who were Letha’s aunt and cousin, respectively.
From the outset, listeners are cautioned about the graphic nature of the content, which includes violent assaults and murder. This warning sets the tone for an episode that is as raw as it is revealing. Miss Beverly and Patches take us back to their childhood, sharing fond memories of Letha, who was more like a daughter to Miss Beverly and a sister to Patches. These recollections paint a vivid picture of a vibrant young girl who loved playing in the creek, catching crawdads, and spending time with her family.
As Letha grew older, the dynamics within her family changed dramatically. Her father's sudden death from a heart attack left her feeling lost and anxious. This sense of instability was exacerbated when her mother remarried and moved away, leaving Letha and her brother to fend for themselves. The episode poignantly captures Letha’s struggle to find her footing in a world that seemed increasingly uncertain.
One of the most gripping moments comes when Miss Beverly recounts the last time she saw Letha. She describes how Letha seemed unusually anxious and sad, a stark contrast to the lively girl she once knew. This sense of foreboding only deepens when Patches reveals that Letha had confided in her about being afraid of certain people who frequented her home. Despite these warning signs, no one could have predicted the tragic turn of events that would soon unfold.
The investigation into Letha’s disappearance is meticulously detailed, highlighting the exhaustive efforts made by her family and the police to find her. From missing posters to search parties, the community rallied together, but it wasn’t until months later that the grim reality of Letha’s fate was confirmed. This search for answers and the subsequent discovery of her body is a sobering reminder of the fragility of life and the devastating impact of violence.
Throughout the episode, the host, Wendy Lyons, handles the narrative with sensitivity and respect, ensuring that Letha’s story is told with the dignity it deserves. They also provide valuable insights into the broader implications of such tragedies, emphasizing the importance of community support and the relentless pursuit of justice.
For true crime enthusiasts, this episode is a must-listen. It offers a compelling blend of personal anecdotes, investigative details, and emotional depth that will leave listeners both moved and informed. Tune in to the Murder Police Podcast to hear the full story and honor the memory of Letha, a young woman whose life and legacy continue to resonate.

The Murder of Bobbie Jean Blacka | Mini-Series | Part 1 of 4
The Murder Police Podcast
03/23/21 • 32 min
On May 8, 2012, 38 year old Bobbie Jean Blacka was found unresponsive in an apartment located in Keyser West Virginia. Bobbie Jean was pronounced dead at the scene. Within several hours, it was determined she likely died of a heroin drug overdose. Another overdose in a state that was seeing more overdoses than just about anywhere else.
Was this “just another overdose” as we callously say these days?
Maybe not. Listen to then-officer Bobby McKone describe an investigation that occurred after he responded and his experience and intuition told him “something is just not right”; like so many investigators discover.
This mini-series is not only a commemoration of Bobbie Jean Blacka, a young woman battling addiction like so many other people, who lost her life and the opportunity to recover; it is a deep conversation about opiate addiction from the side of law enforcement, a snap-shot in 2014, in a state plagued with some of the highest mortality rates due to overdoses.
You will also hear how these complex investigations are handled in smaller police departments, where specialization does not exists. This is where the detective’s heart and hunger are the driving force behind justice for crime victims. This is the real world for many police officers in the United States and for that matter, around the world.
As a Murder Police Podcast mini-series, each of the 4 episodes will publish weekly, instead of the every-other-Tuesday schedule. Here are the dates. Make sure you have subscribed to The Murder Police Podcast and set your player to automatically download new episodes so you get them right away.
