The Motivated Parent

Armando & Stacy

Welcome to the Motivated Parent — a podcast that motivates parents with genuine advice and laughter. We, Stacy and Armando, are excited you are here. We hope that with each episode, you gain some valuable insight and apply it to your lives. Parenting is one of our most significant accomplishments, but it isn't always easy. It's a daily adventure into the (sometimes) unknown territory. We realized a while ago that we wanted to give the best of ourselves to our kids and decided to make that happen by being "The Motivated Parent." The Motivated Parent - 30. The Importance of Cousins: Keeping a Family Unit Alive
play

03/09/22 • 53 min

Cousins are the lifeblood of a family, and if you don't keep the relationships going with them, the family ultimately "dies."

After a recent trip to my Grandma's 90th Birthday (my last living grandparent), I realized that cousins are the link to holding families together. Cousins are who you can count on to keep the family "alive" with the history and stories. In this episode, we discuss why you should make an effort to stay connected, how to stay connected, the importance of cousins, and the eventual death of a family unit without these connections.

Season 2 Episode 4 The Importance of Cousins: Keeping a Family Unit Alive.

The Motivated Parent - The Good + Bad of Being Your Child’s Friend
play

05/18/21 • 42 min

Being your kid’s friend is a process that evolves as they get older. Sometimes we rush the process, while other times, we block it from occurring. There is no right or wrong answer, but there are advantages and disadvantages in both areas.

Join the conversation on where you stand in the parenting evolution - are you currently in the friend role or more of the “enforcer” (parenting) role? Stacy is a bit of both! Armando is more of a friend!

What happens when you plan this phenomenal family vacation, but then everything seems to keep going south? Family Vacation Mishaps are bound to happen. It's your response to them that sets the tone for the remainder of your time. We set out on a 3-week road trip from Georgia to Montana, down to Colorado, and back to the East coast. Day one seemed great, but little did we know; the rest of the trip would be filled with constant mishaps. On that trip, we went through 3 significant mishaps and a dozen or so small ones. We could have said, "enough is enough; we are just going home"! However, we didn't let it get to us. A mishap is just "an unlucky accident" that we don't have much control over. The only thing we do have control over is our reactions.

Vacationing with Your Spouse is one of the most important things you can do for your marriage, friendship, and as a parent. We've been vacationing for the last 19 years, and the ones where it's just the two of us are some of the best trips we take. These vacations allow us to reconnect with each other.

Your vacations together could be from your "bucket list", budget-friendly adventures (or stay-cations), ones where you learn a new skill together, or simply one to disconnect. Whatever you choose, vacationing with your spouse should reinvigorate your marriage and help you be a "Motivated Parent."

The Motivated Parent - Social Media + Navigating Turbulent Waters
play

05/25/21 • 48 min

We dig into the good, the bad, and the ugly. Social media can be the bane of any parent's existence, and for a good reason, but what happens when social media is good? Parents tend only to see the adverse effects, but sometimes the good outweighs the bad.

We discuss timeframes for what ages are suitable for your kids to get social media accounts. We also cover what might be more critical and rarely discussed - when do we "allow" our parents to get a social media account? Jokes aside, navigating the turbulent waters of social media can be difficult, but you are ultimately the decision-maker.

Vacationing with other families is fun, but it can quickly turn into a nightmare. If you aren't communicating, you might end up like us - standing outside of the J.W. Marriott in a "busted" minivan with a bunch of "small bags" with the Grammy's happening two blocks away!

Vacations should bring friendships together, not push them apart. We reflect on our past trips with family or friends and discuss four crucial aspects that have to be covered before you pack any bags. Without these four aspects, you are running the risk of a wasted vacation and possible strained friendships.

The Motivated Parent - Family Game Night Part One

Family Game Night Part One

06/08/21 • 46 min

Family time seems to be this elusive thing that we all want but never have the time to for. Then Covid hit, and we were all stuck at home, spending time together. Fast forward a year, and life is returning to normal, and we are back to eating out, the “go-go-go” shuffle of kids to sports and clubs, and busyness.

I miss the forced family time. I miss the time where I couldn’t say no because I have all the free time. I miss not being busy. I miss being with my kids.

I can’t be alone in my thoughts. And I know I’m not. Armando and I have an extensive collection of board games. And by large, I mean it’s over 1,000 board games. In this episode, we chat about our favorite games we like to play as a family.

Hopefully, we will inspire you to bring Family Game Night back or start one if you’ve never had one at all.

Why Are We So Negative?

Parenting always feels like a one-up game. It feels like that more now than ever. So why does it always seem like we are focusing on the negative? Why aren’t we praising other parents more often? Negativity seems to spread faster than positivity. Some people even thrive off of it. However, what if we were just a bit nicer to our friends or acquaintances?

We discuss a few NBA parents who are "hated" for nothing more than wanting the best for their kids. Armando and Stacy also give a few ideas on being a better friend and human being.
