The Morning Formation (TMF) Podcast
02/23/22 • 38 min
Today, we are very fortunate to be join with a Medal of Honor recipient who began his military career by joining the Oklahoma Army National Guard, while he was still in high school.
Shortly after his high school graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps from the year 2000 to 2008, which included many assignments all over the world as well as deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005 and again in 2008.
After his last deployment, as a US Marine, our guest today decided to join the US Army Special Forces in 2009. In April of 2013, our guest then did another combat deployment to Afghanistan where his experiences, vast military training, and true grit would be challenged on 28 August 2013, when enemy insurgents conducted a complex attack on his FOB and today, I am so grateful to have Medal of Honor US Army Master Sergeant Earl Plumlee as a guest on The Morning Formation Podcast.

The Journey of an American Sikh Warrior with US Army 1LT Kanwar Singh
The Morning Formation (TMF) Podcast
12/02/21 • 42 min
Thank you for joining us today, warriors. We’re joined today with a US Army Signal Corps Commissioned Officer, but unlike many military officers, our guest today is unique. When our guest today is donning the United States Army uniform, some have to do a double take because most serving in the military are clean shaven wearing their issued head gear. Unlike most, 1LT Kanwar Singh is a devout Sikh, loves America, has a full beard with long hair neatly tucked under his turban.
In 2011, 1LT Singh attended a speech where Senator John McCain encouraged attendees to serve their country through the military. Shortly thereafter, SPC Singh took the ASVAB, scored within the top 1% and sought to somehow join the United States Army without breaking his deep religious beliefs in Sikhism.
In today’s episode, we’re going to learn more about 1LT Singh and his journey, which ended up challenging a policy that was held in place, since 1981, against honoring religious accommodations for Sikhs.

From Black Hawk Pilot to Yoga Advocate: Sarah Moore's Journey to Mental Health
The Morning Formation (TMF) Podcast
08/14/24 • 47 min
Imagine the life of a former Army Black Hawk pilot who faced immense pressure and severe anxiety, leading to a life-altering panic attack. In this episode, we have the privilege of hearing from Sarah Moore, who poignantly shares her journey from post-9/11 enlistee to aviation officer, and how the intensity of military life steered her toward advocating for mental health. Sarah reveals the prevalent unhealthy coping mechanisms in the military, such as excessive drinking and lack of sleep, and explains how these experiences fueled her mission to support other veterans through her business, Blue Side Yoga.
As the only female service member in her family during wartime, Sarah offers a unique perspective on the emotional and physical struggles faced by military families. She discusses the challenges of transitioning back to civilian life, dealing with PTSD, and managing post-deployment pain, as well as her journey from military service to federal law enforcement. This profound realization of the need for mental health resources led to the creation of Blue Side Yoga, a program aimed at helping veterans scientifically understand and manage stress. Sarah emphasizes the importance of reintegrating into family life and finding a sense of home again.
We also explore the transformative power of yoga and meditation for veterans and first responders, with Sarah recounting how a neurosurgeon's recommendation sparked her personal journey with yoga. From overcoming common misconceptions to understanding the mind-body connection, Sarah highlights the mental and physical benefits of yoga.
We introduce innovative virtual training programs like the "Warrior Mindset" and "Mountain Athlete" courses, designed to prepare participants for mental and physical challenges. The episode culminates with an exciting 12-week program that includes a trek in Nepal, aimed at fostering mental fitness and holistic healing. Join us for an episode packed with invaluable insights and actionable advice on mental health and well-being.
