One Year of Genocide: Diana Buttu on Israel’s Brutality and the Fight for Justice
The Mondoweiss Podcast
10/11/24 • 58 min
Today’s episode was recorded just before the one-year anniversary of October 7th, the date marking the beginning of the most recent iteration of Israel’s genocidal campaign in Gaza. Unfortunately, we missed the release date, but we still felt it was crucial to share this conversation as events continue to unfold.
Since the recording, Israel has not only continued its brutal assault on Gaza but has also intensified its aggression in Lebanon, with hundreds killed and over a million people displaced as Israel prepares for a ground invasion. In this episode, I speak with Diana Buttu, who offers a powerful analysis of Israel’s colonial expansionist project, its use of propaganda, and its deliberate targeting of Palestinian civilians.
Buttu also discusses the international community's inaction, particularly the U.S.'s role in enabling Israel's violence, and reflects on the sense of isolation and hopelessness felt by many Palestinians. She provides a deep dive into the internal dynamics of Israeli society, which supports and justifies these actions while offering little accountability for atrocities committed. Despite the devastating realities, Diana shares her thoughts on the importance of global solidarity and the hope for justice in the future.

80. Progressive Congressmember Jamaal Bowman loses primary to AIPAC-backed candidate
The Mondoweiss Podcast
06/26/24 • 32 min
Yesterday Jamaal Bowman, a member of the so-called Squad of progressive politicians in the U.S. House of Representatives, lost his hotly contested primary election in New York’s 16th District.
This primary race between him and George Latimer broke records as the most expensive primary race for the House of Representatives in U.S. history. Political action committees affiliated with AIPAC, the American Israel Political Affairs Committee, poured over $15 million dollars into the race to boost Latimer’s campaign.
AIPAC and its affiliated groups pledged to spend $100 million during the 2024 election cycle to promote pro-Israel candidates. I spoke to Michael Arria today about the impact of Bowman’s loss and whether AIPAC is really as influential as it claims to be.

Mondoweiss’s Gaza Correspondent, Tareq Hajjaj, recently published an article featuring witness testimonies of the deadly Israeli attack on the Nuseirat Refugee Camp in Gaza. Massive airstrikes hit the camp just as the Israeli military staged a raid on homes inside the camp where Israeli captives were being held. Four captives were recovered alive while over 270 Palestinians were killed and as many as a thousand were wounded. Resistance groups claimed that three other captives were killed by the Israeli military during the raid.
Mondoweiss’s Managing Editor, Faris Giacaman, spoke to Tareq about his reporting.

43. Operation Breaking Dawn and Israeli elections
The Mondoweiss Podcast
08/31/22 • 32 min
On August 5th, Israel launched a three day operation in the besieged Gaza Strip. They dubbed it “Operation Breaking Dawn”. Israel’s acting Prime Minister, Yair Lapid, promote the operation as a preemptive strike to quash what he said were concrete threats by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement in Gaza. Over the course of three days 49 Palestinians were killed, including 17 children. According to our documentation, while many PIJ members and affiliates were indeed targeted, the majority of those that were killed were civilian noncombatants. The operation was the second major Israeli offensive on Gaza since last year. It also happened to fall just a few months before Israel’s upcoming elections at a time when Israel’s current prime minister and his party are struggling in the polls. In the wake of the attack many Palestinians accused Israeli officials of using Gazans as sacrificial pawns in their political games, while Lapid, and others in his government, hailed it as a success.
Amjad Iraqi joins Yumna Patel to discuss Israel’s political motivations behind the Gaza attack. Amjad is an editor and writer at 972 Magazine, based in Haifa. He’s also a policy analyst at the think tank Al-Shabaka and was previously an advocacy coordinator at the legal center Adalah.

40. How Pro-Israel PACs are upending Democratic primaries
The Mondoweiss Podcast
08/05/22 • 68 min
We are about halfway through the primary election season in the United States. This cycle has seen an explosive growth in spending from political action committees tied to pro-Israel lobby groups such as the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC. In this episode Michael Arria and I speak with Beth Miller from JVP Action and campaign consultant Peter Feld about how this direct campaign engagement from Israel lobby groups is affecting elections.
But first, I asked Michael to update us on the Michigan primary where Democrat Andy Levin lost in a high-profile race that attracted a flood of money from the Israel lobby PACs.

39. The UN is investigating the root causes of violence between Israelis and Palestinians
The Mondoweiss Podcast
07/25/22 • 38 min
In May, 2021, fighting broke out between Palestinian resistance groups in Gaza and the Israeli military. Three hundred Palestinian residents of Gaza were killed, including 66 children, and thousands more were injured. The United Nation’s Human Rights Council set up a Commission of Inquiry to identify the “root causes'' of the violence. On June 7th of this year the Commission presented its first report to the UN Human Rights Council.
Unlike past UN commissions of inquiry on violence between Israelis and Palestinians, the mandate of this Commission is not time-limited. It is not subject to annual renewal. And it is not restricted to examining the immediate circumstances that led to its formation. Rather, it was told to take its time, and examine the “underlying root causes of recurrent tensions.”
In further contrast with past commissions and Special Rapporteurs on the occupied Palestinian territories, this Commission has been tasked with examining the situation in both the occupied Palestinian territories and, in the words of the Commission’s June report, “Israel itself.”
The commission is led by several highly experienced leaders in international law, including Miloon Kothari, who served as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on adequate housing with the Human Rights Council.
In the wake of the Commission’s first report, Mondoweiss contributor David Kattenburg spoke with Miloon Kothari. His views were both candid and cutting.

22. How Iron Dome funding split the Democratic Party on Israel
The Mondoweiss Podcast
09/27/21 • 44 min
On Thursday of this past week, the US House of Representatives passed a bill that would give Israel an additional $1 billion dollars in military aid for its missile defense system known as the Iron Dome.
Progressives in the House had earlier managed to strip the bill as an attachment to a must-pass government funding bill known as a continuing resolution. In response, Democratic Majority Leader Steny Hoyer put the legislation on the floor as a stand-alone bill without going through the normal committee process, or what is called regular order.
I spoke to Beth Miller, Senior Government Affairs Manager at JVP Action, about the political maneuvering that brought the bill to floor and to it’s ultimate passage.

77. The Question of Hamas and the Left with Abdaljawad Omar
The Mondoweiss Podcast
06/10/24 • 47 min
Mondoweiss’s Managing Editor, Faris Giacaman, speaks to Abdaljawad Omar about his article, “The Question of Hamas and the Left.” In it, Omar argues that Leftist critics in the West of Hamas fail to understand the complexity of Palestinian politics and resistance. He writes, “One cannot ground solidarity with Palestine on a politics that dismisses, overlooks, or excludes Hamas.”
Abdaljawad Omar is a PhD student and part-time lecturer in the Philosophy and Cultural Studies Department at Birzeit University.
