The Modern Phoenix

The Modern Phoenix

Gervase Kolmos

The Modern Phoenix (formerly “It’s All Me”) In a culture that values logic, urgency, perfection, and sameness, The Modern Phoenix walks a different path: one that honors her unique mind, body and soul. Between information overload, the demands of modern life, and lifetimes of conditioning and “shoulds”, it can feel hard for a woman to know and listen to her own wants and needs. We’re so busy caring and doing and anticipating and managing that we forget ourselves. We hope there’s a better, more balanced, life-giving and feminine way to be a modern woman—to have regulated nervous systems, intuitive solutions to complex problems, and the distinct trust in ourselves and our choices, despite life’s curveballs, but we’re not sure where to start. That’s where I come in. I’m Gervase Kolmos, Inner Transformation Coach and phoenix-in-evolution. I help women learn to trust themselves and be guided by their own inner authority to live with pleasure, authenticity and embodied wisdom. This podcast is my mission and my mantra: you are light and dark, thinking and feeling, perfect and a work-in-progress. Together, we’ll unlock your intuition, tap into the wisdom and resources of your body, and navigate this confusing, demanding, gorgeous life. So let’s burn down the stories, conditioning and beliefs that don’t serve us, shall we?

Trigger warning: In this episode we will be discussing abortion and sharing a story of a newborn baby’s death. Please care for your wellbeing

In today’s episode Gervase is talking with newfound activist and a Charleston force for abortion rights, Sarah Frick. Sarah shares her personal and painful story of losing her first baby, Grace, at three days old and the medical complication that led to her making the choice to abort her next two fetuses before finally birthing the three healthy children she has now. It’s messy and inspiring, as all the best stories are, which is why we hope this conversation empowers you to go share yours with people open to listening.

In this episode we dive into:

  • The moment Sarah got the call and knew she would need to abort her baby
  • Why her story highlights that safe abortions need to be legal
  • Sarah’s (not great) experience speaking in front of lawmakers in the Senate
  • How to be pro–life and pro-Jesus and the intersection of religion and politics
  • What it’s like to be a newfound activist
  • How to protect our energy while fighting the good fight
  • How to navigate the awkward spaces as women and mothers where we find differences of beliefs
  • How and why the old white men making all these new laws and decisions about women’s bodies are clearly acting out of fear

We know conversations about abortion aren’t always “comfortable,” but we believe compassionate conversations are the only things with the power to change the lens through which we see complex issues.

If you would like to take action to support Reject the Total Abortion Ban- Call your Senator immediately and tell them to vote NO H 5399 before the bill is debated on the Senate floor on Wednesday, September 7, 2022

More about Sarah Frick:

Sarah Frick has been in the yoga and fitness industry for 16 years. After opening and operating two successful power yoga studios for 10 years in Charleston, South Carolina, Sarah sold both at the peak of their success to rebrand not only her fitness concept but herself. She wanted more than just a fitness experience. Sarah’s life had changed. She had changed. She had grown. She had experienced loss. She had experienced grief. And, ultimately, she had experienced grace. Losing her first child, Grace,in early infancy was a pivotal point in Sarah’s life. Losing Grace dropped Sarah into her body, into her heart, and into her life to truly see what was important and what mattered. From that, The Works Method started to bud and to take life. This practice she created—The Works Method—is extremely physical. She inspires people to think, If I can work through some of this shit on my mat, imagine what I can do in my own life. Sarah currently lives in a little beach town with her three wild children and equally wild husband.

The Modern Phoenix - How Do We Survive and Thrive Together with Kerri Kelly
play

08/31/22 • 52 min

In this complex conversation with Kerri Kelly, the author of American Detox, Kerri shares with Gervase the event that disrupted life and forever changed her as she strove to find meaning, healing and understanding of who she was and how she got to this place. In this episode we dive into:

  • Our roles in the world and what shapes us.
  • How our societal rules are built to uphold systems of power.
  • The veil that clouds our ability to see the truth.
  • Vast differences in life experience based on proximity to privilege.
  • How good intentions don’t justify actions.

Kerri shares that you can start to recalibrate your life around new values based on the truth. Just being willing to hold the truth and be changed by the truth allows you to see that the “we” is more important than the “I” if we are going to survive and thrive together. It’s about opening to the whole truth in our world and realizing that we have all internalized the teaching of toxic ideas. By interrogating our actions and thoughts, locating where we are inside of the systems of power and privilege and engaging collectively we can imagine a better world for everyone.

Kerri is the founder of CTZNWELL, a movement that is democratizing wellbeing for all. A descendant of generations of firemen and first responders, Kerri has dedicated her life to kicking down doors and fighting for justice. She’s been teaching yoga for over 20 years and is known for making waves in the wellness industry by challenging norms, disrupting systems and mobilizing people to act.

Gervase is getting publicly therapized this week with soul mate and licensed professional counselor Chelsea Green. Chelsea speaks such wisdom about how the systems that we are surrounded by as children, translate into our adult life. The conversation is sprinkled with mic drop moment after mic drop moment from the choices that women, and individuals face everyday to how we can calibrate our roles in the patriarchal society.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • The patterns we perpetuate as adults that stem from what was deemed “normal” to us as part of our nuclear family
  • Why and how roles (parent, daughter, wife) develop within systems and an exercise for introducing flexibility to your capacity to step in and out of your rigid roles
  • How we trick ourselves into associating comfort with control
  • The traumatized parts of us that developed in reaction to the way we were raised

Chelsea is a Licensed Professional Counselor providing integrative mental health therapy in Charleston, SC. Her therapy practices specializes in working with adults, couples, and families in the midst of life transitions, relationship stress, trauma recovery, family systems, anxiety, depression, and stress. She is also a family constellation group facilitator and a visual artist who merges her many talents to curate transformative experiences.

I sat down with my wise and thoughtful friend Katie Ashley, another Charleston, SC local, to hear her takeaways from the seasons and cycles of the past few years as I know she is someone who embodies the #ItsAllMeMindset beautifully.

Katie brings her lived wisdom to this conversation and shares it through her unique lens of her therapeutic yoga training and Chinese medicine, plus her personal experience with surfing.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • The cycles (or cyclones) of being a woman, mother or entrepreneur
  • How Katie keeps herself at the center of her life’s experiences. #itsallmemindset
  • Earth lessons, samskaras and giving ourselves grace to be in the process
  • How we were both reluctant nature lovers🙈, even though it connected us to the inherent magic in the cyclical nature of seasons, tides, and our human experience.
  • How Katie faced a deathly fear of the ocean to cultivate self-trust and lean into her true desire to be a surfer
  • The incredible metaphor that surfing provides for a modern woman mastering her balance of the masculine and feminine.

More about Katie: Katie Ashley offers individualized movement therapy in her downtown studio space in Charleston, SC. These sessions include a blend of functional movement, equipment based Pilates, Katonah Yoga, Buddhist meditation philosophies and practices, hands on Thai yoga therapy techniques, and a good dose of Traditional Chinese Medicine themes and classical yoga philosophies.

She is the author of the book, Living Life On Purpose, and is the resident yoga teacher at the Feminist Magic Market that occurs in the cozy backyard of Itinerate Literate Books in North Charleston. She teaches weekly yoga classes at Yoloha Yoga Factory on James Island and offers workshops wherever she’s invited.

She is also the Wellness Coach at Hammocks on the Edisto, a small residential treatment center for women in recovery from trauma and alcohol and substance abuse and has long been an advocate for recovery of all kinds.

The Modern Phoenix - Moms Demand Action for Gun Reform with Jackie Shelley
play

07/27/22 • 43 min

In this robust conversation, Jackie shares several pieces of good news where this fight is concerned and gives us not only hope, but also next steps. It’s a must-listen, especially for those of us who are looking to understand exactly how this affects us all, but especially people of color.

This was not clearly stated in this conversation, but deserved to be: “Black Americans are disproportionately impacted by gun violence. They experience 10 times the gun homicides, 18 times the gun assault injuries, and nearly 3 times the fatal shootings by police of white Americans.” (from the Everytown website)

More about Jackie Shelley: Jackie Shelley is the SC state leader of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America--the leading force for gun violence prevention, with chapters in all 50 states and a powerful grassroots network that works at the local, state, and federal level to create change. Upon graduating Clemson University, Jackie taught high school English and served as yearbook adviser in the public school system. After deciding to start a family, she became a stay-at-home mom and weekly volunteer in her kids' classrooms. Devastated by the mass shooting of first graders at Sandy Hook elementary, Jackie started the Charleston, SC group of Moms Demand Action and has served in a leadership capacity ever since. She lives in the Charleston area with her husband, two sons, and a space-invading pug named Zelda.

More about Moms Demand Action: Moms Demand Action is a grassroots movement of Americans fighting for public safety measures that can protect people from gun violence. We pass stronger gun laws and work to close the loopholes that jeopardize the safety of our families. We also work in our own communities and with business leaders to encourage a culture of responsible gun ownership. We know that gun violence is preventable, and we’re committed to doing what it takes to keep families safe.

The Modern Phoenix - Calling in the coaching industry with Emily Cassel
play

06/29/22 • 64 min

G sits down with her current business coach and one of her oldest entrepreneur friends, Emily Cassel, for a juicy convo unpacking some “trends” they’ve been noticing in the coaching industry. From “word salads” to “downloads” and “codes in the quantum,” they are doing their damndest to discern, in real time, how to be regularly gut-checking whether the words we use and the way we market big concepts like femininity and intuition as coaches is ethical, in integrity and in service to a generation of women listening.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • How to embody what your values are in the coaching world as well as being a woman and a mother, to stay in integrity.
  • The power of investing in yourself to calibrate quicker and stay in your zone of genius.

Emily Cassel is a Charleston, SC-based business strategist and leadership coach for women entrepreneurs and the founder of WMNûp, a global network and community of women leaders and entrepreneurs who are disrupting industries, innovating change, and doing things differently. WMNûp serves the mission of lifting and leveling women up in business, life, and leadership.

Emily also hosts the podcast Like Nobody's Business, where she teaches women entrepreneurs how to masterfully navigate the inevitable growth edges and evolutions of business, life and leadership. Emily currently offers her work in three primary ways: through The Soulful Leadership Mastermind, the 90-day Business Evolution private Intensive, and the WMNûp community membership.
