We don't know what we don't know.

What is that one thing that we don't know, but if we did it would change everything.

As Veterans, we can often fall into the gap of not knowing the right path or resources to help through our transition.

Today we are talking with Dr. Mike Haynie.

Dr. Mike Haynie is Syracuse University’s Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives and Innovation, and also the Barnes Professor of Entrepreneurship.

In 2011, Haynie founded Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans & Military Families (IVMF), the nation’s first interdisciplinary institute created to inform and advance the policy, economic, and wellness concerns of America’s veterans and families.

Today IVMF programs serve over 25,000 veterans annually, and the Institute is widely acknowledged as the nation’s leading academic voice related to issues impacting veterans and military-connected families. In 2013, Dr. Haynie’s efforts on behalf of veterans were the subject of a feature story by the CBS news magazine 60 Minutes, titled “Succeeding as Civilians.”

sTopics Covered:

  • How to start running with an idea
  • Navigating the gap in transition
  • Changing belief systems
  • Navigating the sea of goodwill
  • The crisis of not having more shared experiences

The Military Veteran Dad Podcast - 114 | A Story of Anger and Redemption with Blake Mattocks
play

03/01/21 • 74 min

Is your life happening to you or for you?

This question trips me up at least once a week when I hit a setback or run into a feeling that I can't shake.

A lot of those times those feelings are rooted in a deeper feeling that I haven't looked at or dealt with. And to quote Elsa, its typically something I just needed to "let it go."

Blake has a story that looking back with a 20/20 perspective of life, it is clear to me his life was unfolding in a way that was preparing him for bigger trials, bigger tests requiring larger acts of courage and integrity.

If you are at a point in your life where you are struggling to get through and find the right path, I am certain this episode will be a flashlight for you.

Topics Covered:

  • Joining the military because of angry
  • Losing a parent while on active duty
  • Letting angry govern your life
  • Taking off the masks we wear
  • Rising up and learning to fall down with integrity
  • The masks that we wear
  • Fathering through angry
  • Leaning into the community through trials and tests

The Military Veteran Dad Podcast - 28 - Suicide, It Is Not The Only Way with Bob Martin
play

07/01/19 • 70 min

Suicide, Divorce

Today's episode is going to crack your life wide open and you will most likely shed a tear as you hear Bob Martin open up about his life after transition. He went from a man who thought he had it all to a man that was in the deepest of pits in his life.

This is the story of a man who almost didn't live to tell this story and can only be described as a voice from God that it wasn't his time.

What I love about this episode is that he shared his story in a really vulnerable way that if you are in this moment right now, it will hit you to the core.

We were not mean to do life alone, for 3,000 years we have done life in tribes, we shared the load of what life gave us.

He also opens up about what he saw his role as a father before the divorce and how that role changed after. It opened up a good question to ask yourself, "What do you see your role as a father?"

Mortgage

My connection to Bob comes from the oddest of places, Bob is also my Mortgage guy and we first met last year when I moved into our new home.

At the 49 minute mark, we switch gears and I take advantage of Bobs Mortgage experience when dealing with VA loans and also why his tag line is that it's not just a mortgage it’s a relationship.
