The Lin Life Universe - Episode 208 - Arts And Mental Wealth
play

07/27/19 • 1 min

Art comforts, elevates the spirit and affirms life and hope. Consider creativity a wellness practice. The arts are important for our lives because beauty has a powerful role. When we are involved in creativity, we feel that we are living more fully than during the rest of life. Creativity produces mental wealth. Let’s take a look at just one of the arts. Music. Music impacts brain function by reducing stress, pain and symptoms of depression as well as improving cognitive and motor skills, spatial-temporal learning and neurogenesis, which is the brain’s ability to produce neurons. Musical training strengthens the brain’s executive function. Executive function covers critical tasks like processing and retaining information, controlling behavior, making decisions and problem solving. After James Allison, a scientist and musician, won the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize in Medicine for a major breakthrough in cancer research, he shared, "My lab has been so well-tuned it feels like a really good band.” After I read about his approach in the lab, I couldn’t help but hear the music improvisation. He hadn’t consciously known where he was going with all of this experimentation and suddenly they had arrived at a result that had cured cancer in mice. https://www.wired.com/story/meet-jim-allison-the-texan-who-just-won-a-nobel-cancer-breakthrough/ https://www.wired.com/story/tech-effects-how-does-music-affect-your-brain/ Einstein had a mind that came up with some ideas that would have to wait 100 years to be proven correct. Einstein was an accomplished violinist. He thought about science in terms of images and intuitions often drawn from his experience as a musician. Then later converted these into logic, words and mathematics. He wanted his science to be unified, harmonious, expressed simply and to convey a sense of beauty in form. It’s your authentic expression through art making, music, song, movement, writing and other forms of art-based imagination that makes creativity central to a wellness practice. Want answers? The Lin Life Universe - Episode 240 - Travel Credit Card
play

08/28/19 • 1 min

At a minimum, you should have a travel credit card that does not charge you international conversion fees. When making purchases abroad, you will always be better off declining the merchant’s exchange rate for US dollars in favor of opting for the local currency which will use the more favorable bank exchange rate used by your credit card as long as there is no international conversion fee. Other perks to look for in a travel credit card are things like global entry application credit, primary car rental insurance, airport lounge access, a generous sign-up bonus. One of the most popular amongst my travel savvy colleagues includes all of these benefits, the Chase Sapphire Reserve card. Before you apply read up on the Chase 5/24 rule. It’s the reason I don’t qualify. I’ve been using my Citi Aadvantage Platinum select card to top up my American Airlines points since I was close to a flight award. A great website for answering questions about travel cards and effective strategies for accumulating and leveraging reward points is ThePointsGuy.com. https://www.asksebby.com/blog/rules-to-know-for-chase-credit-card-applications https://thepointsguy.com/ Want answers? The Lin Life Universe - Episode 20 - Envy To Aspiration

Episode 20 - Envy To Aspiration

The Lin Life Universe

play

01/21/19 • 0 min

Today I want to talk about Envy. You can turn that feeling into an aspiration. Envy is the emotion of coveting what someone else has. How do you go about turning this seemingly negative quality into something positive? For example, if you envy someone's success, news of a colleague’s promotion or someone's financial windfall. Ask yourself what’s behind the feeling? Notice perhaps your ambition and take a moment to admire that. If you envy someone's image or looks, perhaps it's the discipline behind the body, or the radiance. or confidence that you see. Find what you can emulate. That's how you turn your feelings into aspirations.

The Lin Life Universe - Episode 14 - Assess Your Stress

Episode 14 - Assess Your Stress

01/15/19 • 1 min

Today I want to talk about stress mastery. At some point as human beings we’re all going to encounter stress. One important step is to assess whether the stress is due to expectations, comparisons, capacity, relationships or ability. If it's due to expectations, then there's some mindset work that needs to happen to adjust those expectations. If it’s due to comparisons, find a lower bar to compare to so you feel better about yourself. If it's due to capacity, this will involve you learning a new skill or bringing some additional help in to expand that capacity. If the stress is due to relationships then perhaps those relationships need to be re-defined or conversations need to be had. If the stress is due to sheer ability, sometimes it’s best just to remove yourself from the situation.

The Lin Life Universe - Episode 16 - Upleveling Elevator Ride
play

01/17/19 • 0 min

Today I want to talk about one of the side effects of upleveling. That way you're not caught off guard when it happens to you as you try to make improvements in your life and strive for more within yourself and beyond yourself. This is the feeling that you'll be lonely. Imagine that you're getting into an elevator and you can't take everybody with you. Not everybody's going to come up at the same time as you. Anticipate it, be prepared for it and do not be dismayed. It's part of the ride. Fear not, there will be another group waiting at your destination floor. You’ll find and make new friends that resonate at your new bandwidth and find that the lonely ride was worth it.

The Lin Life Universe - Episode 249 - Defensive Behavior
play

09/07/19 • 1 min

Continuing our Transformational Conversations series. How to handle Defensive Behavior. Do you have a loved one that will hurt your feelings or cross a boundary? And as soon as you start expressing yourself, their walls go up. They accuse you of always criticizing them. And they start to attack you with reasons why you’re actually in the wrong. In other words, they get defensive. People who are defensive have difficulty taking responsibility for their actions and resist feeling “wrong” because they view it from a negative lens that they have failed. It’s a knee jerk reaction that shields the person from guilt and self-doubt. Kids often develop this behavior as a way to cope with difficult situations and then it becomes a bad habit as an adult. If it has merit, go ahead and apologize for whatever reason they give in their counter-attack. Lead with humility. “I’m sorry, that was not my intention. I take responsibility for making you feel that way.” Follow up with, “Even though I sympathize with how you feel, you are responsible for how you respond. You seem to only bring these things up when I want to have a conversation. I expect you to initiate your own conversations when you are hurt. It doesn’t feel very good to have you take over when I want to talk." Want answers? The Lin Life Universe - Episode 171 - Mont Saint Michel Highlights
play

06/20/19 • 1 min

My friend planted a seed in my head about an abbey rising from the sea on the northwestern coast of France in Normandy called Mont Saint Michel. It captured my imagination and the rest is history. What started off as a road trip from Pamplona to Arcachon to see the highest dune in Europe, fittingly became a great pilgrimage though France. It was pouring rain in every town we arrived in and we just kept pushing to get north of the storms. I’m certain the abbey was beckoning us north. When we got to Rennes, things started to clear up. Sure enough we were greeted with sunshine and blue skies the morning we reached the Abbey. The view upon approach is impressive. Imagine a spectacular Gothic Benedictine abbey and tiny medieval village perched atop a small rocky island surrounded by nothing. The view is even more surreal at high tide when the island is surrounded by water. The climb to the top is a delightful maze of cloisters, twisting staircases, gardens, and ramparts. During the Hundred Years War, it became a fortress. During the French Revolution, it served as a prison. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. https://www.travelingmom.com/destinations-international/essential-tips-for-visiting-mont-saint-michel-france/ Want answers?
