35 Chris Boucher - In The Beginning
The Let's Talk Hemp Podcast
05/20/20 • 60 min
In this episode we discuss the beginning of the Hemp Industries Association, in 1994 in Arizona. Before the HIA was established, there was the True Hemp Industry Alliance (THIA), first established in 1992, who called the meeting where HIA name was created. THIA created a certification program called the True Hemp seal certification - to test and confirm products being labelled as hemp were 100% hemp, and preventing unscrupulous players from mislabeling products. This group pooled together funds to import millions of tons of hemp textiles into the USA. Like any new movement there were competing groups and trying to gather everyone on one platform was not easy. Chris discusses some of the issues in the “beginning” of hemp’s reformation - the difficulty confirming that imported Chinese hemp was truly hemp and not mixed with cotton or other fibers. It wasn’t without obstacles as competing certifications were created, debate raged on using the hemp plant leaf versus those that didn’t want the stigma attached, and police threatened arrest for serving hemp seeds at festivals. For the past 3 decades, Chris has fought to raise awareness of hemp and it’s benefits. His stories provide insight into where the industry started and some of the battles fought along the way.
“We wanted to see hemp like Cotton Inc and we wanted to see hemp like the linen council, so we used those as models. This thing was bigger than all of us, we’re like hemp’s gonna save the world!” - Chris Boucher

"Empowering Indigenous Voices: Highlights from the National Indigenous Cannabis Policy Summit"
In this episode of the Let's Talk Hemp podcast, I had the pleasure of attending the National Indigenous Cannabis Policy Summit in Washington, D.C. This remarkable event, organized by Mary Jane Oatman, Rob Pero, and the Indigenous Cannabis Industry Association (ICIA), brought together tribal leaders, industry professionals, healthcare experts, and policymakers to discuss critical cannabis and hemp policy issues affecting indigenous communities.
Throughout the summit, we engaged in three days of insightful keynotes, roundtables, and panel discussions that covered a wide range of topics, including cannabis economic development, the legal landscape of hemp derivatives, sustainable cultivation, and the role of cannabis in addressing health concerns like PTSD. A key focus was on tribal sovereignty and the need for cannabis policies that reflect the unique needs of indigenous communities.
I had the opportunity to sit down with Rob Pero from ICIA, who shared his thoughts on the event's success and the importance of collaboration among diverse voices in the cannabis industry. We discussed how the summit fostered an intimate environment for meaningful conversations and emotional connections, which is often lacking in larger industry events.
Mary Jane Oatman also joined me to discuss the history of the ICIA and the significance of this year's summit. She emphasized the importance of partnerships and the need for indigenous communities to have a seat at the table in the broader cannabis conversation.
Additionally, I spoke with various attendees, including Eben Sumner, Mike Lamuto, Hunter Buffington, Alicia Fall from Her Many Voices and Ross Sloan, who highlighted the collaborative spirit of the event and the potential for indigenous communities to lead in the cannabis space. The discussions underscored the importance of unity and shared goals in advancing cannabis policy and creating opportunities for underserved communities.
Overall, this episode captures the essence of the summit and the exciting developments in the cannabis industry as indigenous voices continue to rise and make an impact. I look forward to seeing how these conversations evolve and the progress we can achieve together in the future.

36 Hemp for Our Future - Hemp Helps America
The Let's Talk Hemp Podcast
06/03/20 • 56 min
This episode takes a look at how three amazing hemp leaders bring the industry together in an effort to help combat some of the issues resulting from pandemic pandemonium. Hemp for Our Future was the brain-child of Courtney Moran and Shawn Hauser, who brought in Annie Rouse and Friends of Hemp to organize and execute an ongoing campaign to gather supplies and help utilize hemp products to help America fight the war on COVID.
From delivering cannabinoids to front line healthcare workers in New England to the donation of hundreds of clothes from companies like Colorado Hemp Company, this campaign has dozens of hemp companies supporting it on a nationwide scale. Go to Hemp For Our Future to see the video, learn how you can donate and support this worthwhile cause.
Rick speaks with Kyla DuMont, the Vermont transplant to Los Angeles, that finds her path taking her home as a result of the COVID economic relocation program - essentially leaving L.A. for Vermont to maintain employment consulting for companies in the cannabis space focusing in hemp. She describes the current state of the State of California, how she came up with the idea of MediMaple, combining cannabinoids with maple syrup, and how many folks didn’t realize maple came from a tree! We discuss that as one of her passions, bringing together healthy, high-grade Vermont syrup with healthy cannabinoids -- and trying to expand to CBG so law enforcement and healthcare workers can use it for endocannabinoid issues.
"And I think for a long time to come there will be opportunities for hemp to be the most appropriate suitable material for a number of reasons." - Shawn Hauser.
