play

07/01/22 • 51 min

Luis Fitch is a multidisciplinary creative director and designer at UNO Branding based out of Minneapolis but it all started in the Tijuana/San Diego area where his love for art started at a very young age. We talk about his journey of breaking barriers in the design and marketing sector and staying true to his roots by always adding "color, sabor y personalidad" to everything he does. His love for collecting stamps came full circle when he received a call from the United States Postal Service to have his own Dia de Muertos stamp and at the same he collaborated with Target with a full line of household and decorative items to celebrate this special holiday. He continues to expand his brand, promote his art & his Mexican culture.

The Latinx Chronicles with Hip and Erika - Margarita Quiñones Peña - From Dreamer to Engineer at Microsoft
play

07/11/23 • 40 min

Margarita Quiñones Peña came to this country as a 4-year-old to Chicago. She was one of the few young women in her engineering school which took her almost 6 years to graduate since financial aid is not available to dreamers but she didn't let her stop her from achieving her dreams.
She quickly learned that she needed to look for mentors, take it to the next level, and find sponsors to help her achieve her goals and guide her to achieve her big audacious goals.
Who are you mentoring? Who are you sponsoring by lifting them when they are not in the room?
Our past shouldn't define our future and she shared her story in her new book Homecoming (find it on Amazon) and support her cause to help families arriving in this country. The Latinas Sweat Project is one of her other projects that help promote healthy lifestyles through yoga, and meditation.
She is a success story that motivates us to continue to do the good work of helping others!
I hope you love her story as much as we did and please connect with her on all social media platforms.

Dr. Graciela Berumen is the Assistant Director of Diversity and Multicultural Student Engagement for the department of Diversity and Multicultural Student Affairs at Kansas State University. Dr. Berumen's research interests include first-generation college students, global education, language acquisition, culture, equity, inclusivity, access, and identity in Education.

Graciela considers her work as an educator and as a board member for the Tonantzin Society, Harvesters, The YWCA and her membership in Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., as a way to give back to the community and encourage others, who like herself are proud children of immigrants, to embrace their heritage and pursue their academic dreams. Her passion for equity in education and her love for her students inspired the creation of her non-profit: BE F1RST, a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to offering one-on-one support, mentoring and scholarships for first-generation students and families.
The belief in the transformational power of conversations surrounding diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) also led to the creation of Becoming Equitable, LLC. The amazing Carmen talks about her life from her humble beginnings, the murder of her brother, and their move to Skokie from their beloved Humbolt Park for better opportunities but also meant leaving part of their culture, their language, and their loved ones. Her spirit and her words are uplifting and her journey was not easy, especially after becoming a single mom right after high school. The universe had other plans for her and she found a career as a public servant at the Cook County sheriff's office. She always kept an open mind, her hard work, and determination got her promoted time and time again but she always kept her dad's words close to her "learn while doing". She also reminded us that diversity means nothing without inclusion. We touched on police reform, police training, and the broken criminal justice system. The political world is ugly but "WE" the people still have the power and your VOTE matters.
