Monica Milonovich is a dietitian and professor at University of Texas at Austin. She teaches Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) to the UT Austin dietetic students, and also works with the dietetic interns. Last year, one of her students* asked to present on Intuitive Eating and Health at Every Size, and Monica agreed without knowing what she was in for. That presentation left her feeling uncomfortable, curious, and ready to change.

*If you listened to the previous episode, featuring Lauren Newman, one of the current dietetic interns at UT Austin, you're now hearing the other side of the story!

Monica is working hard to expand her nutrition practices to embrace this weight-neutral, non-diet approach, and is hoping to change the UT Austin didactic programming to include this.

With this episode, I hope you might feel inspired to explore these concepts and see how they can work with your nutrition career, and/or present these topics to your professor, colleagues, or peers who may be new to all of the above.

This week’s RD Real Talk guest is Kim Hoban, of KHNutrition.com. We met two years ago, on an almond tour in California (because sometimes RDs take trips to learn about almonds). Now, we talk almost every week. This time it happened to be recorded! In the nutrition news: A bleeding plant-based burger is one food scientist’s solution to eating less meat. We’re not totally convinced. Some other (behavioral, computer, and exercise) scientists are in a fight against health apps, and the 10,000 steps per day theory. The ideal world of eating every vegetable (and fish) you buy before it goes to waste is not the world we live in. We share some real talk about our recent food purchases and subsequent waste. It happens. (But it doesn’t have to!)

Clara Nosek, MS RD, joins this episode to talk about all things parenting, working, and finding what works for you. Clara is an anti-diet dietitian, with a mission to inspire reconnection with the body through decolonized health and redefined beauty standards. You may know Clara as @yourdietitanbff on Instagram, where she’s the queen of memes related to dietetics and diet culture within the profession. On this episode we talk about the different ways that the two of us have built our businesses and structured our work hours around parenting our small humans. We get real about the different ways we have approached this stage of our life plus our career, what has worked for us, what we’ve learned about ourselves along the way, and how we’ve each done things really differently (and that’s okay!).

This "Relaunch" episode covers how we—Lane 9 Project co-founders Alexis Fairbanks, and Heather Caplan; joined by L9P long-time supporter, Amelia Boone—have evolved since we launched this project in 2017. Then we switch gears to discuss what has changed and evolved (or not) within the sport of running.

This episode helps to define what we mean by "eating disorder voices", and disordered thought patterns and behaviors related to food and exercise. Sadly, so much of the symptoms and behaviors of disordered eating and eating disorders are normalized by diet culture and validated by anti-fat bias (or fat phobia). We hope this helps bring awareness to these thoughts and behaviors, helps you better understand your triggers, and provides a safe spot for you to process what might be helpful for you going forward.
