Holly Pye - SUP Racing, Downwinding, Being a Sleep Specialist + Cinammon + Raisin Bagels
The Joy of SUP - The Paddleboarding Sunshine Podcast
03/31/22 • 65 min
I am thrilled to welcome Holly Pye to The Joy of SUP Podcast.
I first met Holly when I asked in SUP Sisterhood for a sleep specialist. What I didn't realise that as well as working in the NHS as a sleep physiologist and running her own specialist sleep clinic - Stars Sleep Clinic - Holly is a very successful SUP racer and downwinder!
Holly is a SUP racer living in South Devon. She enjoys the competitive side of the sport and has raced in the GBSUP National Series since 2017. In 2021, Holly travelled to Hungary with her SUP for the ICF World Championships where she came 13th in the long distance race - an 18 kilometre race against some of the world's best!
Holly loves being in or on the ocean and takes any chance she can to get out there. She grew up around the water and now does lots of different watersports. When the weather turns she can often be found downwinding along the Devon or Cornwall coast, riding the bumps on her SUP from one point to another and enjoying every minute of it.
When Holly is not on the water, she loves to help others. She trained as a sleep physiologist and runs Stars Sleep Clinic where she offers cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia and supports people with a variety of different sleeping difficulties.
Holly is now a team rider for Starboard SUP, SUP North Devon and Paddle Logger. All organisations which care for the oceans and environment and allow us all the opportunity to protect what we love.
We talk about:
- Growing up by the sea and her water loving family - everyone SUPS!
- Downwinding - what it is, how to start safely, the safety aspects that Holly takes into consideration every time she goes out, joining a SUP downwinding group
- Starting a SUP club at university

Natasha Lovegrove - The Kind Store, Summer River Days, Unwinding and Plastic Pollution
The Joy of SUP - The Paddleboarding Sunshine Podcast
03/07/21 • 39 min
I am so thrilled to welcome Natasha Lovegrove onto The Joy of SUP Podcast. Natasha is the founder of The Kind Store and I discovered her on Instagram when I was looking for a great plastic free shampoo + conditioner. She recommended Kind 2 (which I now use) and I realised she was a paddleboarder! She is also a big fan of hugging trees which is something I love doing too!
Natasha discovered paddleboarding by chance in Slovakia in 2015. She has always loved board sports, including high adrenaline wakeboarding and snowboarding.
She thought SUP was just something she could do on holiday, but was reintroduced to the sport through her interest in plastic pollution and the work of Lizzie Carr and On Planet Patrol paddleboarding litter picks. She realised it was a wonderful way to marry her two interests - board sports and caring for the planet.
Based in Essex, Natasha created The Kind Store over 2 years ago as she struggled to find products that met all of her principles and thought there must be more people like her wanting to reduce their single use plastic consumption. She's been vegetarian, now vegan, for nearly seven years and this is what kick-started her journey into sustainability.
She also has a successful career as a Chartered Building Surveyor and runs The Kind Store at night. She and her husband married in summer 2020 in Cornwall.
Like many of us, SUP offers Natasha the chance to escape the demands of a busy working life and gives her a space, place and time to unwind and relax.
I am keen to show all the possibilities of SUP on the podcast and share the important role it can have on our physical and mental wellbeing. I think many of us will relate to Natasha's story.
Topics we also cover:
- The Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation requires an extra license in addition to the Waterways License available from British Canoeing. Always check the waterways to know where you are allowed.
- Stopping to reflect and celebrate how far we have come either in business or our paddleboarding journey.
- Natasha didn't grow up as a 'water baby' but found water sports a little later in life. We all find our way to SUP on different paths.
You can find Natasha on Instagram @thekindstoreuk + The Kind Store. Photo credit Natasha Lovegrove.

Camilla Todd - SUP Soul Retreats, Life Coaching, Anchors + Feeling the Fear + Doing It Anyway
The Joy of SUP - The Paddleboarding Sunshine Podcast
03/02/21 • 51 min
I am thrilled to welcome Camilla Todd to The Joy of SUP Podcast. I met Cami on Instagram and loved her energy and passion for wellbeing of people and the planet. I was really keen to find out more about SUP & Soul, her wellness and water retreats.
In this episode Cami talks about making a big decision at a turning point in her life to become a SUP instructor, following a difficult few years. It is really inspiring to hear how she took that leap of faith to back her herself and how the support of life coaching and her partner helped her see the opportunities before her and go for them. She really helped me understand the value of life coaching and why she is now combining it on her wellness and water retreats.
Cami discovered the power of SUP in 2015 on a trip to Canada - a story I think you will love although a little hair raising!
She was immediately in love with the sport. In 2019 she trained as an ASI SUP Instructor in Portugal and officially launched SUP & Soul in 2020. Here is her vision for it:
“My vision is to create SUP experiences and retreats that combine the power of paddleboarding, nature and blue space with mindful practices to help enable people to care for themselves, each other and our planet. I strongly believe in the benefits of self care, compassion and finding calm in this chaotic world. I believe we can find this through reconnecting with nature and in turn we can use this connection to become nature ambassadors who will move mountains to protect what we love. That’s the purpose behind SUP & Soul.”
In this episode we talk about:
- The power of life coaching
- Following your dreams and backing yourself
- Feeling the fear and doing it anyway
- The kindness of strangers in encouraging us to believe in ourselves
- Building self confidence
- Becoming a SUP instructor with ASI and what that entails
- SUP in Canada
- Blue health and blue mind
- How paddleboarding allows you to see a different perspective on life + your thoughts
- Water and wellness retreats
- Pivoting your paddleboarding business in a pandemic
- Rediscovering the joy of play as we get older
- Using an anchor to enjoy a quiet moment on the water
- Being kind to yourself and body confidence
You can find out more about Cami at:

Cami talks about using an anchor on her paddleboard. Here is a link to what she uses: (not an affiliate link!) Boatworld SUP Anchor
Thank you for listening! I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did recording it. I love Cami's commitment to water and wellness and how she bravely decided to follow her dreams and bring her unique paddleboarding ideas to the world and help others.

Nicky Green - 2MinuteBeachClean, Grandpa’s SUP, Cold Water Dips + Chocolate Almonds
The Joy of SUP - The Paddleboarding Sunshine Podcast
06/18/21 • 43 min
I am so thrilled to welcome Nicky Green to the podcast today!
Nicky is Chief Operating Officer at The 2 Minute Foundation.
She is 42 and lives in Croyde, North Devon with her 2 girls, husband Graham and her dog Pixie.
In 2019 I fundraised for The 2 Minute Foundation with my C2C SUP adventure from Liverpool to Goole, creating 4 beach clean stations. I am a very proud Ambassador.
After graduating with a BA degree in 2000, Nicky travelled to Mexico + New Zealand. She worked in Australia with one job overlooking Sydney Harbour bridge and the blue mountains and loved every minute!
On her return, she worked in financial PR, then project management but jumped at the opportunity to join Graham in India for 6 months where she travelled and volunteered for a Women’s empowerment charity.
After working in London, the pull back to North Devon and the Atlantic coast was magnetic.
At the end of her maternity leave for her firstborn, she started working with Martin Dorey, founder of The 2 Minute Foundation for his writing business 1 day a week.
As traction on the 2 minute beach clean hashtag grew, she listened intently into the conversations between Martin and Dolly, the social media manager and wanted ‘in’! Starting out with the bookkeeping, online shop and station sales, she soon picked up more hours to work with corporate relations, new campaigns, recruiting the wider 2 minute team and being instrumental to transition into charity status.
She now helps to drive The 2 Minute Foundation forwards with the growing and awe inspiring team and adores working for a charity that aligns with her values. She is 2 Minute through and through, always on the look out for new 2 Minute opportunities and litter (!), continually learning and seeking out new adventures.
In addition to the love of SUP, her hobbies include running, Pilates, singing and dipping in the sea!
In this episode we also hear how Nicky's Grandfather was enjoying paddleboarding in the 1940s!
