It’s episode 105 and today we’ve got returning guest Jackie Kabler – TV journalist, presenter and about to publish her second series of crime novels. She has lots to say about the submissions process, changing genre and how she manages to fit the writing around her very hectic day job.
Jackie has spent many years in broadcasting and journalism – including a nine year stint on GMTV, reporting on some of that decade’s biggest stories. She’s worked freelance and for the BBC, Sky, as a newspaper reporter, media trainer and she currently works as a presenter on QVC in the UK. Her her first cosy crime series began with The Dead Dog Day but now she’s moved to darker territory with her psychological thriller Am I Guilty out now with Harper Collins.

It’s episode 117 with David Wappel, an award-winning screenwriter based in LA. I first came across David after reading his excellent Twitter thread giving tips on how how to avoid over-writing action lines in a screenplay. I’ll put a link to that in the show notes because his stuff about anchoring nouns, visual writing and how to consider scale in your description can be applied to any medium.
We touched on story, self-reflection, specificity when writing characters and even how you should consider measuring your success as a creative. So it’s a great conversation to fill your creative well as we hurtle towards the end of the year.

It’s episode 209 with Charlotte Duckworth, who also writes as Charlotte Rixon, working in both psychological thrillers and book club fiction genres. I reached out to Charlotte initially because of a post she wrote about the struggle of being a full time writer, so we get to talk about that but also Charlotte’s work, her journey to publication, how she prioritizes her writing time and, of course we’ll discover which book saved her life.
Charlotte is the USA Today bestselling author of The Rival, Unfollow Me, The Perfect Father and The Sanctuary. Her fifth psychological suspense, The Wrong Mother, was published by Quercus in early 2023. She started her career working as an interiors and lifestyle journalist, writing for a wide range of consumer magazines and websites and, under the pen name Charlotte Rixon, she also writes contemporary bookclub fiction. Her latest release is the paperback of The One That Got Away by Charlotte Rixon, which is out right now.

My debut novel, SAFE HANDS is out everywhere now and Kindle Unlimited readers can even read it for FREE!
