The Jacksway Collective: Philosophy & Fiction

The Jacksway Collective

In the second episode, The Jacksway Collective adds its third member, Gordon, thus completing the trio of ex-roommates. Together, they break down Flannery O'Connor's short story Everything That Rises Must Converge.

The discussion ranges from race relations, essentialism vs existentialism, to feminist film theory (how they got there, who the hell knows). As you quickly find out, the three navigate all over the place when deconstructing the text at hand.

The three also briefly introduce themselves and figure out what it is they're exactly trying to do with this podcast in real time. This is the beginning of a long journey for these guys.

Listen to The Jacksway Collective talk philosophy or fiction every week. A podcast where 20-somethings have in-depth, academic(ish), discussions about whatever the hell they want.

Note from the creators: Please hang in there as the sound quality DOES get better! We're working on our workflows and things are improving every day. Rome wasn't built in a day, nor was this.

Episode 1 | Absurd Reasoning & The Homeless Marketplace

The Jacksway Collective

In the pilot episode of The Jacksway Collective podcast, ex-roommates Oliver and Jhana put their humanities degrees to the test as they attempt to break down the first half of Albert Camus's The Myth of Sisyphus.

Listen as these two wrestle with the concept of absurdity inherent in existence and how to deal with that fact. What does it mean to face the absurd? Ought we commit suicide? Do Jhana and Oliver know anything about ANY of the other philosophers mentioned in this piece? (hint: no).

In the introductory segment, the duo analyze the economic marketplace of the homeless. Are machiavellian homeless people who play a more active role in interacting with their donors more deserving of money? The two debate which methods are seen as acceptable solicitation.

Episode 3 | Swimming in Monogamy

The Jacksway Collective

Self-reflection and self-criticism is difficult. Often times, we find ourselves perusing through life without taking a step back and recognizing potential faults or areas where things went wrong. This concept is taken to its extreme in John Cheever's "The Swimmer." Oliver, Gordon, and Jhana weigh in on Ned's journey as he attempts to swim his way across the county and return home.

To start the discussion, Gordon asks whether or not Monogomy is still a valid form of organizing modern relationships. He puts forward a paper that suggests otherwise. What do these three modern med have to say about relationships in all their forms? Listen to find out!
