The "REAL PAIN" of "EMILIA PEREZ"
The Izzy and Murtada Picture Show
11/20/24 • 52 min
This week, Izzy and Murtada take a look at two films: Emilia Perez, a semi-controversial musical directed by Jacques Audiard about a lawyer who is recruited by a drug cartel boss to assist in locating a doctor for her transition, and A Real Pain, a Jesse Eisenberg film about two cousins who travel to Poland together to explore their family history and rekindle their relationship. While Emilia Perez left the duo wondering what on earth Greta Gerwig’s Cannes jury was thinking, A Real Pain at least stirred some interesting thoughts about how we observe the past today.

Understanding “The Method” with Isaac Butler
The Izzy and Murtada Picture Show
05/23/23 • 52 min
This week Izzy and Murtada welcome Isaac Butler, author of "The Method: How the Twentieth Century Learned to Act.” The trio discusses the scourge of biopics, how the standards of what is considered “good” or “bad” have changed over time, and how the Method redefined masculinity and what’s considered “fuckable” on screen but still gets such a bad wrap. Some of the actors discussed (though not all are Method) include Marlon Brando, Kim Stanley, Joan Crawford, John Garfield, Sally Field, Daniel Day Lewis, Nicholas Cage, Joanne Woodward, Al Pacino, Jennifer Garner and Robert De Niro. Butler brings his vast knowledge of the history of acting and, needless to say, Izzy and Murtada wish the conversation could have gone on forever.
