The SmartWay to Sustainability

05/16/23 • 34 min

The Intermodal Logistics Podcast

The freight industry has an unquestionably large impact on the environment, but many companies are trying to mitigate it, including the more than 4,000 EPA SmartWay partners. To discuss what the Environmental Protection Agency's program, which turns 20 next year, is, along with how it's helping to cut emissions (and costs) and lead to better freight sustainability, we welcome EPA Environmental Protection Specialist for Region 5 Tony Maietta. In addition to SmartWay, Tony discusses electrification including where electric stands for trucks, trains and ports. Plus, he goes over clean air rules and grants available to improve on the sustainability of fleets.
For more information on the EPA SmartWay program and to sign up - whether you're a shipper, carrier or logistics company - visit https://www.epa.gov/smartway.

Breaking Down Fraudulent Double Brokering

Fraudulent double brokering - also known as freight broker fraud - is an illegal practice that's unfortunately on the rise. And it's potentially costing the industry hundreds of millions of dollars each year.
The Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) is on the frontlines of the battle against this criminal behavior, and TIA President & CEO Anne Reinke joins us to discuss what members are seeing and what they're doing to fight back.
Anne explains exactly what double brokering is, ways the crime is perpetuated, why fraudulent brokers aren't going to jail and offers tips for shippers and logistics pros to avoid becoming a victim when booking their next load. Plus, she offers an update on the proposed Motor Carrier Safety Selection Standard Act, which would provide some relief at the federal level. And Anne and InTek President Shelli Austin recap the recent TIA conference.
Learn more about the TIA https://www.tianet.org/.
And for more on double brokering (and legal co-brokering), read our recent blog article https://blog.intekfreight-logistics.com/understanding-double-brokering-co-brokering.
