Moving Medicine with Cardinal Health 3PL VP Joel Wayment
08/22/24 • 40 min
Moving pharmaceutical cargo is a specialized process, requiring experienced, careful handling every step of the way. To learn more about what it takes to transport vital medicine across the cold chain, we welcome Joel Wayment, VP/GM at Cardinal Health Third-Party Logistics Services and Packaging Solutions to our latest edition of InTek Freight & Logistics: The Podcast.
Under Joel - who's been in the industry for nearly 20 years - Cardinal's 3PL is noted for providing warehousing, distribution and order-to-cash services to emerging and established biopharma companies with products across a wide range of categories. He tells us about the unique nature of moving therapeutics and other pharmaceuticals, the company's Exclusive Pharmaceutical Transportation Network (EPTN), the challenges of maintaining temperatures even well below zero and the necessity of tracking these sensitive shipments every step of the way.
Joel also explains a variety of procedures Cardinal has to address cargo theft and its focus on sustainability - from recycling (and recycled) packaging materials to consolidation meant to cut down trucks on the road.

From Freight Docks to the C-Suite
Every career has its own unique story, and our guest on Episode 42 of InTek Freight & Logistics: The Podcast, has had quite a journey to executive leadership. Nathan Sanders is a longtime logistics pro, beginning at the freight docks, then working up through warehousing and transportation, to where he is now, a recent CEO and private equity consultant.
Nathan tells us his story in his own words, how he's seen the logistics industry evolve over his 25-plus years in the space, and what he expects next from automation and artificial intelligence. He also discusses his time as CEO of Brook Furniture Rental and how he and his team transformed it to better equip the company for today's consumers.
He shares insights into the furniture industry gleaned from his time at Brook as well as Ashley Furniture (with a glance at the freight market as well). And we go over how the importance of logistics and shipping has changed among executive leadership over the years.

International Container Ports...in the Midwest?
When one thinks of an international container port, it conjures the image of a city along the ocean. But Ports of Indiana CEO Jody Peacock tells us why a Midwest state 500 miles away from the nearest one can still handle ocean cargo. On our latest episode, Jody explains the Indiana Container Initiative, which involves plans to make the Ports of Indiana a potential origin and destination for ocean containers directly over water between the U.S. and Europe.
He tells us the added value of adding containers to Indiana's ports (which include Burns Harbor on Lake Michigan, as well as Jeffersonville and Mount Vernon on the Ohio River), what the ports currently import and export - including agriculture and steel, the importance of access to multiple transportation modes, from ships to trucks to trains - and even river barges. Plus, he explains how sustainability and convenience factor in to using Indiana's ports. And he takes us through the route - and the lock system - that allow ocean vessels to make it deep into the U.S.
