Episode 247 - Fixed Lists and List Fixers
The Independent Characters | Warhammer 40k Podcast
11/15/24 • 144 min
Episode 247 of The Independent Characters witnesses the return of Josh to the show! We continue to have Campbell from the 40kBadcast as our adopted Podcast Partner while Dan is on Paternity leave! (Congrats Dan by the way!)
In this episode Carl, Campbell, and Josh discuss the benefits and drawbacks of two different styles of lists. On one hand, there are those who never, or rarely change anything in their list. While on the other hand, you have those who enjoy changing up their lists every game.
We will go into the pros and cons of each option, and maybe a few ideas on how you might want to adjust your approach.
And yes, that is still new intro music you are hearing at the beginning of the episode. We are going to stick with it for awhile, at least as long as Campbell is guest starring on the show, and see how you folks adapt to it! Be sure to let us know your feedback!
This episode will drop on November 15th.

Episode 82 - Zone Mortalis
The Independent Characters | Warhammer 40k Podcast
07/28/13 • 192 min
Episode 82 of The Independent Characters takes us into the deadly arenas and dangerous combats of Zone Mortalis!
Zone Mortalis is a set of rules from Forge World which are free to download from their site. Within this set of rules you will find some of the most deadly close quarters combat of the 41st Millennium! Explore Space Hulks, root out enemies in abandoned mines and sewer systems, and battle against forces inside of secret Mechanicus Bases!
We talk about the rules themselves, how this method of play actually works, some alternatives to Forge Worlds incredibly (and pricey!) terrain, as well as some suggestions for those playing AND developing the rules.
And just when you think it's over, we pull in Black Library Author Steve Parker to talk to us about his book Deathwatch in our latest installment of Forbidden Lore! WARNING: Spoilers abound in any Forbidden Lore segment, and this is no exception!
We hope you enjoy!

Episode 246 - Why Campaigns Fail and what to do about it
The Independent Characters | Warhammer 40k Podcast
10/21/24 • 151 min
Episode 246 of The Independent Characters brings onto the roster Campbell McLaughlin of The 40k Badcast fame to join us! While his regular Podcast partner Dan takes some much deserved paternity leave, Campbell will be joining The Independent Characters army roster on a regular basis. We couldn't ask for a better partner!
In this episode, Carl and Campbell talk about the ways that Campaigns, in pretty much any system, fail. We discuss what types of speedbumps campaigns often run into, and how those become dead end streets. Then we take a look at what strategies you can apply to ensure that you campaign is a successful one!
Even with some choice edits, this episode rolls in at about two and a half hours. But we think this is a solid topic of discussion and we hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed recording it!
And yes, that is new intro music you are hearing at the beginning of the episode. We are going to stick with it for awhile, at least as long as Campbell is guest starring on the show, and see how you folks adapt to it! Be sure to let us know your feedback!

Episode 68 – Terrain: The Third Army
The Independent Characters | Warhammer 40k Podcast
12/17/12 • 200 min
In Episode 68 we discuss terrain as the “Third Army” on the gaming table. We touch on some rules around terrain before we talk about the availability of terrain kits from various companies. In the second portion of the show we discuss the building of custom terrain as well as a few solutions for the safe storage of your hard work.
We have a rather lengthy hobby progress and games played section in which we also introduce our shows guest for the episode, Jeremy, the winner of this years GW Terrain Contest.
Last but not least – we have an interview with Graham McNeil for our latest Forbidden Lore! We discuss The Imperial Infantrymens Handbook as well as his latest release, Angel Exterminatus. We also throw in a little Priests of Mars! There are spoilers in this section of several books. So be warned. This portion of the show is after the closing credits.
Note: Unfortunately the room we were recording in had the air conditioning running and we didn’t realize it was being picked up in the background quite so much. Hopefully you don’t find it too intrusive (we are sticklers for sound quality – it isn’t THAT bad but it bugs us nonetheless!).
We hope you enjoy episode 68.

Episode 80 – Imperial Armour 3 2nd Ed: The Taros Campaign
The Independent Characters | Warhammer 40k Podcast
06/24/13 • 139 min
Episode 80 of The Independent Characters covers a tremendous variety of topics. As usual, we start our with our hobby progress and (lack of) games played. But then we get right into the main course of the show.
Imperial Armour 3 2nd Edition: The Taros Campaign is the first part of our two part main course this episode. We go through the changes between the 1st edition and now, and ultimately let you know why Forge World has released this new book and weather it is worth you buying or not!
This is followed up by a very special edition of The Warrior Lodge, we have titled The 40k Widows Club. We have three of the wives of our players in studio to talk about how their husbands involvement in the 40k Hobby has impacted them and what problems and solutions they have come up with. As it turns out we hear from three different spectrums here. A wife who has children leaving the nest, a wife of a tween-aged child, and the wife of an infant child. We learn some interesting things from their perspective. Hopefully they let us know a few things we can do to keep out of trouble.
Finally, we have an interview with several members of Behaviour Interactive. This is the studio charged with bringing Eternal Crusade, the Warhammer 40k MMO to life! We hear about their previous experiences and some thoughts behind what drives them and what they are thinking about doing with the game. This is recorded over a conference call, so the audio isn’t the best, but we hope you can bear with it as there is some really great information here. We will work to improve this in the future as we are going to be having multiple interviews with the developers as the game progresses!
We hope you enjoy!

Episode 250 - The 2024 Warhammer 40k Year in Review
The Independent Characters | Warhammer 40k Podcast
01/06/25 • 138 min
The end of 2024 brings us around to our annual Warhammer 40k Year in Review Episode. Typically we go down an entire list of all releases for the year and weigh in on our opinions of them. However, this year we have a lot to celebrate here and so we are going to change it up a little bit. Not only is it the end of 2024 and the beginning of a new year, it is the 250th Episode of The Independent Characters Podcast. And although we took a couple of breaks on the way here, we have indeed made it to this milestone episode.
However, for us it isn't about quantity so much as it is about quality. So we will take some time to discuss a little bit of the history of the show, where we see it going, and what is going on currently.
Then, instead of boiling 2024 down to a list of releases by Games Workshop, we will discuss our various favorites of the year in depth. What was our favorite game played of the year? Who was our favorite opponent? What was our favorite release? All of this and more will be discussed as we meander through our opening episode of 2025!
And while we don't know exactly how much longer we will have Campbell on our staff before he heads back to the 40k Badcast, we have him now.
We hope you enjoy Episode 250!

Episode 77 – Imperial Armour 12: The Fall of Orpheus
The Independent Characters | Warhammer 40k Podcast
05/13/13 • 215 min
Episode 77 sweeps through the sector as we cover Imperial Armour 12: The Fall of Orpheus. This is the latest book from Forge World that details a massive Necron invasion (cleansing?) of The Orpheus sector and pits the soulless androids against The Death Korps of Krieg and The Minotaurs Chapter of The Adeptus Astartes!
Of course, we have been gone for some time from our normal programming, so we have a massive section of hobby progress to cover (well at least one of us does!) as well as games we have played in the intervening time. This includes Carls visit to San Diego to attend The Broadside Bash.
And finally we speak with James Hakola, but you may know him better as Mr. Dandy. He has an incredible new line of resin terrain that we think you are going to be interested in!
We hope you are glad we are back, because we are back with a large episode for you to gorge yourselves on!

Episode 78 - Running Events (Part 1)
The Independent Characters | Warhammer 40k Podcast
05/27/13 • 144 min
Episode 78 begins a two episode series in which we discuss what goes into, and how to run events. While this will include tournaments, this is not limited to just that style of play. Over the course of these two episodes (78 and 79) we will discuss the thinking behind running events, how to avoid problems that may pop up and how to make your event more successful.
We will start off by talking about smaller events, on a personal and local level, and then move into regional and finally national level events. We will have guests that include some of the best in the field and hear their thoughts as to what goes into the event and how you come out the other side unscathed!
As usual we lead off with some hobby progress and games played, and devolve into a little bit of arguing about the new Eldar and pricing.
We hope you find this topic insightful, informative and inspirational!

Episode 71 - Expanding Your Gaming Group
The Independent Characters | Warhammer 40k Podcast
01/27/13 • 171 min
Episode 71 of The Independent Characters starts off with a lengthy Hobby Progress and Games Played segment. We then focus on our topic of the show, which is how to meet new players and introduce them to your gaming group. Also, we talk about how to be a new player to an established gaming group. We will discuss the do’s and don’ts of meeting new players (safely) and evaluating whether these people play the style of game that you like to play.
A Warrior Lodge segment hosted by Geoff this time around, includes a panel of all new guests we will see what some of our local gamers think about the topics we have cooked up for them this time around.
Additionally, we have a short interview with Jay of Spruehammer. Jay and Simon are following the gamers dream, and opening a game store! In the process of doing so, they went down to Games Workshop Corporate HQ in the US and took a tour of The World of Battle and the GW factory and facilities there. We talk to them about what their impressions were.
We hope you enjoy!
