Upgrade Spotlight: How to Fight Zombie Cells and Win Aging – Neurohacker Collective : 1009
The Human Upgrade with Dave Asprey
01/07/23 • 32 min
Neurohacker Collective sponsored this episode.
IN THIS "UPGRADE SPOTLIGHT" EPISODE OF THE HUMAN UPGRADETM... you’re going to learn about the zombie cells taking up valuable space in your body and how you can clear them out with senolytics.
When these zombie cells accumulate (formally called senescent cells), they negatively impact how you age. You may experience symptoms like joint discomfort, low mental and physical energy, poor metabolic health, and diminished muscular response when you work out.
Naturopathic physician Greg Kelly joins the show from Neurohacker Collective, where he’s director of Product Development. His expertise includes nootropics, anti-aging and regenerative medicine, weight management, sleep, and the chronobiology of performance and health.
The hallmarks of aging include nine characteristics that organisms all the way up to humans share as we age, Dr. Kelly explains. One of those characteristics is senescent cells.
This discussion gets into the reasons why senescence happens, the science of senolytics, exciting new research, and new product developments that help bodies naturally eliminate senescent cells. This means a better aging process for you!

Wired to Lead the Neobiological Revolution – Jane Metcalfe : 1025
The Human Upgrade with Dave Asprey
02/24/23 • 91 min
IN THIS EPISODE OF THE HUMAN UPGRADETM... the guest is one of the founders of Wired Magazine and someone who has been a continuous source of interest, news and data for decades, Jane Metcalfe. Having basically dissected nerds for her entire life, Jane now runs a fantastic newsletter and news site called NEO.LIFE where she writes about biohacking and the future. If you were to combine someone who really understands society and understands tech (and has read as much science fiction as possible) you would have Jane.
Jane’s, focus throughout her, career has been on how technology is transforming our world. But now she is fascinated with how deeply we can see inside the body and how processing the data we collect allows us to discover new cells, understand complex biological systems, and engineer bacteria, viruses, DNA, and ultimately ourselves.
Her new platform, NEO.LIFE is for exploring how we Homo sapiens will use these technologies and new understandings to power our own evolution.

This broad discussion both hits the high points and goes deep into nutrition, aging, energy, lifestyle, and, of course, tea. Specifically, vibrant green matcha. (Or as Dave says, “It looks like green paint.”) There’s a lot of knowledge and humor shared, as well as hard-hitting truths: “One of the most toxic cultural messages here is that the value of life diminishes with aging,” Dr. Weil says.

- Eat right! Learn the principles of nutrition and apply them to your life
- Get regular physical activity
- Learn and practice methods to neutralize the harmful effects of stress
- Maintain emotional and intellectual connectivity as you go through life
- Attend to your spiritual well-being
More about Dr. Andrew Weil: He founded the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. IN THIS EPISODE OF THE HUMAN UPGRADETM...
...you’ll find out why you’re tired, how to fix it and ways to increase your energy. Fatigue is a hidden epidemic, with chronic fatigue syndrome being the most severe end, but most people (in the U.S.) are experiencing some level of being flat-out tired as hell.
Guest Ari Whitten, Ph.D. (Cand.), CES, PES, says that as a culture, we have normalized fatigue. In his newest book, “EAT FOR ENERGY: How to Beat Fatigue, Supercharge Your Mitochondria, and Unlock All-Day Energy,” he explains that 5.4 million adults in the U.S. have been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome (the most severe case of fatigue). However, the true fatigue epidemic affects 50 to 100 times more people.
This episode’s discussion gets right into the role of mitochondria in human energy. Ari’s research (420 citations in “Eat for Energy”!] is clear. The cause of fatigue is mitochondrial dysfunction, he says. And the biggest factors that affect your mitochondria include:
- Circadian rhythm dysregulation and poor sleep
- Carrying too much body fat and too little muscle mass
- Poor gut and microbiome health
- Blood sugar dysregulation
- Nutritional toxicities and deficiencies
- Neurotransmitter and hormone imbalances
So what can you do to increase your energy currency? A lot, as it turns out. When you understand factors like resilience, cell defense, nutrition and supplementation, you’re on your way to better energy. In this conversation, you’ll learn:
- what’s causing the dysfunction in your mitochondria and how you can repair these critical energy cells.
- strategies that will double your energy levels.
- 7 top supplements (and more) that help get your mitochondria back on the energy track.
Ari has been studying and teaching natural health science for more than 25 years. He went through his own battle with chronic fatigue that inspired his obsession with energy. For the past seven years, he's focused specifically on improving human energy. His education and work in this area touches on critical aspects of human health from nutrition to physical training, to light science, to psychology, and more.
He created The Energy Blueprint science-based lifestyle programs that target brain energy and mitochondria. He also hosts The Energy Blueprint podcast that features world-wide experts on the subject of understanding fatigue and how to get more energy.

How Your Mitochondria Control Your Brain Energy – Chris Palmer, M.D. : 1012
The Human Upgrade with Dave Asprey
01/18/23 • 55 min
IN THIS EPISODE OF THE HUMAN UPGRADETM...Harvard psychiatrist, researcher and assistant professor Christopher Palmer, M.D., introduces a bold new premise about the root cause of mental illness based on decades of research.
Dr. Palmer integrated existing theories and research into one unifying theory—the brain energy theory of mental illness that’s rooted in your metabolism. Through his research, he initially pioneered using a medical ketogenic diet to treat psychiatric disorders. In this conversation, you’ll learn how he went even further to uncover the connection between mental health and metabolic disorders of the brain. That connection lies in mitochondrial dysfunction or dysregulation.
His new book, “Brain Energy: A Revolutionary Breakthrough in Understanding Mental Health and Improving Treatment for Anxiety, Depression, OCD, PTSD, and More,” also explains the increased risk for mental disorders in all metabolic conditions, including diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, pain disorders, obesity, Alzheimer’s disease, and epilepsy.
“Once you see the big picture of metabolism and all of the things that influence metabolism, you actually can see novel ways to intervene,” Dr. Palmer says. “And you can also raise some red flags about some of our current treatments.”
