Join us for an in depth discussion and analysis of the 2016 supernatural horror film: The Autopsy of Jane Doe

Directed by: André Øvredal

Starring: Brian Cox, Emile Hirsch, and Olsen Catherine Kelly

This week we bring you a more recent film for our third instalment of spooky season. What starts off as almost a crime procedural plot turns into a supernatural mystery with each step of the title character’s autopsy. Olwen Catherine Kelly does a spectacular job as Jane Doe - although she doesn’t actually have any lines. As always spoilers ahead - this is definitely one you want to see before hearing the ending.

Scare-O-Meter Ratings:

Tasha - 8 out of 10

Julia - 6 out of 10

Jack-O-Lantern Ratings:

Julia - 3 out of 5

Tasha - 4.5 out of 5

Consensus: One of Tasha’s favourites - Julia is slightly less enthused . . . a solid choice for spooky season.

play

07/29/23 • 33 min

Join us for an in depth discussion and analysis of the 2007 Stephen King adaptation of the Science-Ficiton horror film, The Mist.
Directed by: Frank Darabond.
Starring: Thomas Jane, Laurie Holden, Toby Jones, Marcia Gay Harden, Jeffrey DeMunn, Alexa Davalos & Frances Sterhagen.
Our final film for this month is a bleak look at the state of humanity through an end of the world scenario chalk full of otherwordly creatures.
*Spoiler Alert* - Full synopsis and behind the scenes morcels included.
Scare-o-meter Ratings:
Tasha - 5 skulls
Julia - 5.5 skulls
Jack-o-lantern Ratings:
Julia - 3 out of 5
Tasha - 2.5 out of 5
Consensus: The themes of this film live very much in the Stephen King world of moral ambiguity. His disadain for religion and thoughts on humanity come out in full force. It's a very intriguing albeit bleak character study in an end of the world scenario. A recommended watch and thoughtful perspective.

*Spoiler Alert* - Full synopsis and behind the scenes morcels included.
Scare-o-meter Ratings:
Tasha - 3 skulls
Julia - 4.5 skulls
**Jack-o-lantern Ratings:
Julia - 3 out of 5
Tasha - 2 out of 5

Recommended for horror-light and gothic romance fans.

Join us for an in depth discussion and analysis of the 2014 horror-comedy mocumentary, What We Do in the Shadows.
Directed by Taika Waititi
Starring: Taika Waititi Jemaine Clement, Jonny Brugh, Cori Gonzales-Macuer, Stuart Rutherford, & Ben Fransham.
Our theme for the month of December is Horror-Comedies, and to start us off is one of the most successful and clever mocumentaries to have been concevied.
*Spoiler Alert* - Full synopsis and behind the scenes morcels included.
Scare-o-meter Ratings:
Tasha - 2 skulls
Julia - 2 skulls
** and introducing our new Jack-o-lantern (star) meter **
Jack-o-lantern Ratings :
Julia 5 out of 5
Tasha 5 out of 5
Consensus: Ridiculously clever and hysterically funny, this film not only provides us with all the best vampire tropes, but adds the backdrop of modern day Wellington, New Zealand. The mundane turns into the absurd where four vampires try to co-exist as "flatmates" and navigate modern culture and relationships.
This is 100% a must watch for all Horror and Comedy fans alike, "chickens" included!

Join us for an in depth discussion and analysis of the 2017 Psychological Horror film, Get Out.
Directed by: Jordan Peele
Starring: Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Lil Rel Howery, LaKeith Stanfield, Bradley Witford, Caleb Landry Jones, & Catherine Keener.
Our second pick for April's BIPOC theme was Jordan Peele's debut into horror films which helped him become a contender in the genre.
*Spoiler Alert* - Full synopsis and behind the scenes morcels included.
Scare-o-meter Ratings:
Tasha - 5 skulls
Julia - 6 skulls
**Jack-o-lantern Ratings:
Julia - 3.5 out of 5
Tasha - 4 out of 5
Consensus: An incredibly layered and thought out plot, this film shines a light on the insidious nature of apathy and benevolent racism. It takes you through the very common and day to day fears that black people endure within white society. With an added kick at the end...
Highly recommended watch!!

Our theme for the month of December is Horror-Comedies, and our second installment is a quirky, apocalyptic saunter through Centreville America amidst the zombie apocalypse.
*Spoiler Alert* - Full synopsis and behind the scenes morcels included.
Scare-o-meter Ratings:
Tasha - 3 skulls
Julia - 3 skulls
** and introducing our new Jack-o-lantern (star) meter **
Jack-o-lantern Ratings:
Julia 3 out of 5
Tasha 2.5 out of 5
Consensus: This movie takes us through a low-stakes, mildly entertaining, wry view of modern society... with zombies. Or are we the zombies?? With a soundtrack of one very strange and entertaining song that gives the entire plot in the title. This very Meta, social commentary is full of laughs and some entertaining zombie moments.

Join us for an in depth discussion and analysis of the 1968 satanic horror/drama, Rosemary's Baby.
Directed by Roman Polanski
Starring: Mia Farrow, John Cassavettes, Ruth Gordon, Sidney Blackmer, Ralph Bellamy & Maurice Evans.
Spooky season continues with more iconic horror flics, Rosemary's Baby was surrounded by controversy before and after it's premier. Between real life murders and accusations of satanic associations this film remains influential and eye opening.
**High Trigger Warning** - This film and therefore conversations surrounding it contain references to ritualistic sexual assault. Anyone who may be triggered by assault of any kind please heed this warning.
*Spoiler Alert* - Full synopsis and behind the scenes morcels included.
Scare-o-meter Ratings:
Tasha - 4 skull
Julia - 4 skull
** and introducing our new Jack-o-lantern (star) meter **
Jack-o-lantern Rating:
4 out of 5 Jack-o-lanterns.
Consensus: Underneath the satanic and occult subject matter, this film honestly represents the fears of pregnancy and motherhood on top of the misogynistic isolation and gaslighting that occurs. Everything about this film was innovative and influential. It's visually stunning and atmospherically erie.
Highly recommended watch for horror and film afficionados alike!

Join us for an in depth discussion and analysis of the 2011 found footage supernatural horror fim, Grave Encounters.
Directed by The Vicious Brothers
Starring: Sean Rogerson, Ashleigh Gryzko, Mackenzie Gray, Juan Riedinger, Merwin Mondesir, and Matthew K McBride.
This is the third installment in our found footage month! Bringing a little more creep to the genre this film manages to produce some laughs, corny tropes, and terrifying images all in one go. It even throws in some historical combinations and was filmed at the historical Riverview Mental Hospital in Coquitlam, BC.
*Spoiler Alert* - Full synopsis and behind the scenes morcels included.
Scare-o-meter Ratings:
Tasha - 6 skulls
Julia - 6.5 skulls
Consensus: Where most found footage falls short, this film manages to lull you into a false sense of security with it's hoky low budget feel, but manages to produce some truly chilling and increasingly clausterphobic moments in the second act right up to the end.
Highly recommend!
Worth the watch for found footage and supernatural/asylum horror fans.

Join us for an in depth discussion and analysis of the 1989 family spooky adventure film Little Monsters.

Directed by: Richard Greenberg

Starring: Fred Savage and Howie Mandel

We’re switching it up a bit for our bonus holiday episode - this one is more light hearted than the other ‘80s picks this month. Definitely our most kid-friendly choice - however some questionable adult jokes did get snuck in there. This movie also features two actors from Home Alone and a kid with the engineering talent of Kevin McCallister sooooo holiday movie adjacent.

Scare-O-Meter Ratings:

Tasha - 2 out of 10

Julia - 2 out of 10

Jack-O-Lantern Ratings:

Julia - 3 out of 5

Tasha - 2.5 out of 5

Consensus: This film aged the least well of our 80s fever dream films so far but was still enjoyable for the nostalgic feels.
