The Heart & Science of Leadership - The Leadership Language: How to Communicate for Influence, Trust, and Success

Ever wonder why some leaders instantly command respect while others struggle to get their message across? The secret lies not in what they say, but how they communicate it.
Communication represents the fundamental difference between leadership that merely directs and leadership that transforms. In this thought-provoking episode, Dr. Paul Gavoni and AJ Rinaldi unpack the five critical dimensions of leadership communication that drive organizational success: reinforcing for production, resolving for partnership, reciting for inspiration, reflecting for authenticity, and receiving for understanding.
The conversation reveals surprising insights about the science of human behavior, including the optimal 4:1 ratio of positive to corrective feedback and why our natural tendency to focus on problems actually undermines our leadership effectiveness. Both hosts candidly share their personal struggles with public speaking—once their greatest fear—and how they transformed this weakness into a strength through deliberate practice and mindset shifts.
Perhaps most powerfully, they challenge the common assumption that communication flows primarily downward in organizations. "When was the last time you directed positive feedback up the chain?" Dr. Gavoni asks, highlighting how true communication creates a culture of mutual respect that flows in all directions. Through practical examples, compelling research, and memorable stories, this episode provides a comprehensive framework for communication that builds trust, resolves conflict, and inspires exceptional performance.
Whether you're leading a small team or an entire organization, these evidence-based communication strategies will help you move beyond good intentions to create lasting impact. After all, as the hosts remind us, leadership isn't about title or intent—it's about impact.

The Heart & Science of Leadership - The Organizational Behavior Management of Skinner's Walden Two Community

In this episode, David Roth and Dr. Nic Weatherly chat about the principles of Skinner's Walden Two as they relate to Organizational Behavior Management and the following four questions:

  1. Build a way of life in which people live together without quarreling, in a social climate of trust rather than suspicion, of love rather than jealousy, cooperation, rather than competition. (If we change the words "way of life" to "organization" and change the word "live" to "work," we get an important message about Skinner's message as it relates to OBM)
  2. Maintain that world with gentle but pervasive ethical sanctions rather than police or military force. (change "police or military force" to "aversive control")
  3. Reduce compulsive labor to a minimum by arranging the kinds of incentives under which people enjoy working.
  4. Regard no practice as immutable. Change and be ready to change again. Accept no eternal verity. Experiment.

From a behavior analytic perspective, trauma can be seen as an aversive event or series of events that have led to maladaptive behavior patterns or reactions to certain stimuli. When we understand that an individual's behaviors might be a response to trauma, we can respond more effectively. But how can we better understand trauma? And what constitutes effective responses from a behavior analytic lens?
In this episode, I gathered accomplished behavior analysts Steve Ward, Dr. Adithyan "Dithu" Rajaraman, Dr. Jennifer Austin, and David Roth to dig into a number of questions as a call for nuance on the topic.
AN IMPORTANT AND PERSONAL NOTE ON THIS EPISODE:
I believe there are a number of very good and compassionate behavior analysts who feel one way or another about the concept and approaches associated with TIC. Unfortunately, in some cases, it's led to a classification of behaviors that might be labeled "cancel culture." This is an important topic, and engaging in these types of cancel culture behaviors can create defensiveness and division as opposed to open dialogue and learning. In addition, it tends to punish philosophical doubt, a fundamental underpinning of science.
Using coercion to drive a point home, even if it's a good point, too often leads to counter-control, which usually makes things worse. Let's make a stand on our points, but do so respectfully and in a way that keeps the conversation going. I was grateful to learn from these brilliant and compassionate behavior analysts.. #walkthetalk

If you follow me, you are likely aware that I make numerous posts. Now, 99.9% of the time I receive positive feedback on them. But somebody might take issue with a post every once in a while, which is OK because I'm not perfect, and everybody has their opinion. And that's just what happened last week when I was accused of being "myopic" and "grandstanding" in relation to a post I made about Elon Musk and leadership. Rather than debate online, I thought I would go ahead and invite this individual onto the podcast so we could get to the heart of the matter.
Now, this is usually a way to NOT get on to one of my podcasts! The only reason I invited this guest on and posted it is because I thought the outcome might be helpful in some way for some of my listeners.
