HH #464: Freedom from the shame of our past with Heather Macfadyen and Lisa Whittle
The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey
01/28/22 • 55 min
It’s been four years since the release of my first book If You Only Knew, and it will always hold a special place in my heart. Back in 2018, we did a mini-series where I interviewed several people and asked them about their “If you only knew...”. An “if you only knew” is something in your life that you feel people would think less of you if they knew about it. We’ve all got one of those, I’m sure. BUT here’s the good news: there’s truth and forgiveness and freedom from shame through Jesus. He will use these things as part of our story.
Heather Macfadyen and Lisa Whittle are amongst a few of the people who shared their stories so to celebrate the birthday of my first book, we are bringing back these two conversations and talking about being free from the shame of our past.

HH #486: Joel Muddamalle on why Good Friday is hard and hopeful
The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey
04/15/22 • 53 min
“Before we can get to what’s good about the cross, I think we have to deal rightly and honestly with the horror and the tragedy and the defeat of what the cross would’ve meant for the people of Israel.”
Y’all. This is one of the most helpful and educational conversations on Good Friday and I am so dang excited to share it with you. Dr. Joel Muddamalle serves as Director of Theology and Research at Proverbs 31 Ministries and works directly for Lysa TerKeurst. He is also on the speaking team at Transformation Church with Derwin Gray!
Alright, here’s what I love about Joel. He is one of the smartest people I know and dissects so many great things about theology in a way that we can truly understand. I always feel like I walk away knowing so much more! In this episode, we answer some of your questions like why do we call Good Friday “good” when it is so painful? What is the history of the cross? How do we talk to our kids about Good Friday? I love how he says that we should never disconnect what is hard with what is hopeful. This is SO TRUE. Joy, pain, and hope can all live together. Let’s walk into Good Friday and Easter with this reminder.

HH #472: Find your people with Jennie Allen
The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey
02/25/22 • 31 min
“Even in the hurt and the mess, it’s actually what makes great friendships.”
My dear friend, Jennie Allen, hardly needs an introduction to The Happy Hour community but if you’re new around here, let me fill you in! Jennie Allen is the founder of IF:Gathering and author of so many great books, including her newest one Find Your People! We dive head first into this topic and this is a conversation you’re going to want to take notes on.
Jennie shares that this was the hardest book for her to write because being vulnerable and saying the things that you’re afraid to say is something she is still working on in her life. We talk about the importance of conflict and that although it can feel scary and awkward, it is safe when you both are committed to the friendship. This message is not just about having 3-5 best friends, but about building a village of friendships where we can truly be there for one another.

HH #520 More Than Your Enneagram Number with Beth McCord
The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey
09/09/22 • 46 min
The enneagram is like an observation but the transformation is the Holy Spirit’s work -Beth McCord
Guess who's back on The Happy Hour? You guessed it, Beth McCord. If you know me you know that I love talking Enneagram numbers. I know some of you are totally against The Enneagram, but don’t skip this episode too fast. Beth McCord and I talk about her new book, More Than Your Number: A Christ-Centered Enneagram Approach To Becoming Aware of Your Internal World. That’s right, a Christ-Centered Enneagram approach. Beth’s new book is faith filled and she talks about how the Enneagram is like an X-ray machine, it shows you clearly what’s going on internally, it helps you name things, but it can’t do the changing because only the Holy Spirit and the gospel can transform us.
You are going to enjoy this episode and you will have a different perspective on Enneagram types, whether you are for them or against them. Press play and join me in celebrating Beth on her new book, More Than Your Number

Happy Hour #468: Secret shame and rewriting our past with Bonnie Gray
The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey
02/11/22 • 42 min
“Faith is not an eraser for our past. Faith gives us the ability to go into our past to rewrite it with God.”
*Trigger warning: Mention of sexual assault
Bonnie Gray is an author, an inspirational speaker, and podcast host of Breathe: The Stress Less Podcast. Bonnie touches thousands of lives using storytelling, soul care, and prayer. I’m so excited to have Bonnie here to talk about her most recent book, Sweet Like Jasmine.
Bonnie grew up as a Chinese-American daughter of a mail-order bride and spent much of her childhood never feeling like she belonged. She talks about going on a journey to learn her own story and going through life with an emotionally abusive mother. There can be so much fear in both learning and sharing our stories because we don’t know what people will think of it. But our brokenness is what brings us closer to God and others. I am so thankful to Bonnie for choosing vulnerability in her story and encouraging us to do the same.

HH #478 Let's Talk About It: CHEER with Jackie Hill Perry
The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey
03/18/22 • 50 min
Alright, y’all. Today is a different kind of Happy Hour episode. Welcome to “Tell Me About It!” The Happy Hour started as a way for me to talk about things we’re loving, things that matter, and just the kind of conversations you would have with a friend over dinner! I wanted to bring back that kind of conversation and since I’ve been absolutely obsessed with the Netflix show CHEER, I asked my friend Jackie Hill Perry to come on and chat about it with me!
We break down the whole show so if you haven’t seen it and don’t want spoilers, come back to this one later! We talk a lot about what it must feel like for these kids to come from a small town in Texas and then rise to fame almost overnight. We also have a really deep conversation on cancel culture and holding people accountable. This episode was so fun to record and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
Also, stay til the end of the show because we play Austin Stone Worship’s brand new song called Hope Is Awake!

HH #466: Reading While Black with Esau McCaulley
The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey
02/04/22 • 45 min
“It’s not just the fact that God cares about Black people. He does, He cares about who we are. But He also cares about the rest of the world, too and He wants to create a family.”
I truly could’ve talked to today’s guest for hours and I’m so excited for you to hear this conversation. Esau McCaulley, PhD is an assistant professor of New Testament at Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL. His book Reading While Black was released in 2020 and is such a beacon of hope - I highly recommend it!
In today’s show, we chat about how important it is to sit, read, and listen to stories and experiences that may not affect us. We always have an easy way out of conversations that don’t directly impact our lives. But Jesus calls us to compassion and empathy and to love one another through joys and pains. I love the reminder from Esau that everything we need to love one another well is in scripture - what a blessing it is that we truly have the answer.

HH #469: Attacking anxiety with Pastor Shawn Johnson
The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey
02/16/22 • 40 min
"We really aren't fighting anxiety. It's a God-given gift that Satan has twisted."
That is such a powerful way to look at anxiety and something a lot of us should write on a post-it note so we can always remember. My guest today is Shawn Johnson who serves as lead pastor of Red Rocks Church in Denver, Colorado, a community he and a small group of people started in 2005. His newest book Attacking Anxiety just released yesterday and it is loaded with truth and encouragement for those struggling with anxiety or walking through it with a loved one.
We talk about humility and having to be vulnerable with our pain to those around us. It’s not easy to be the person who feels like they are always the one battling, but God gives us community to help us get through moments we never imagined. God offers us freedom, and we can go get it. I also love Shawn’s reminder that we’re not going to get healthy but healthier because we will not be made perfect until we reach eternity. So thankful for Shawn’s vulnerability in this conversation.

HH #610 Does the Bible Support Same-Sex Marriage with Preston Sprinkle
The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey
09/20/23 • 46 min
As the world’s conversation around same-sex relationships and marriage gets louder, it’s my desire as a christian to know how to listen and engage in a humble, Christ-like way. Today’s guest loves the Word of God and the people of God and engages in this topic with such love, compassion, depth, and thoughtfulness. I’m so incredibly grateful to have Preston Sprinkle on The Happy Hour for the very first time!
Dr. Preston Sprinkle is a biblical scholar, speaker, podcaster, a New York Times bestselling author, and is the co-founder and president of The Center for Faith, Sexuality & Gender. Preston loves talking and writing about hot-button cultural and theological issues with thoughtfulness, honesty and grace. He is passionate about approaching topics that everyone wants to know about, but few are willing to talk honestly and graciously about. Topics like sexuality, gender, race, violence, patriotism, hell, politics, war, and what it means to follow a Jewish prophet-king who was executed for treason. He works hard to challenge himself and others to read the Bible with conviction and humility, while holding their predetermined beliefs loosely.
Maybe you think this topic doesn’t affect you, or you’re feeling apprehensive after listening to our conversation. My prayer is that we can think more deeply, love more widely, and learn to listen and engage in conversations in Christ-honoring ways.

HH #480: Put Your Yes on the Table with Jenn Hand
The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey
03/25/22 • 44 min
“The God of my yesterdays is working in my now, and the God of my now has already gone into my next.”
Praise God for that, friends! My guest today is author and founder of Coming Alive Ministries, Jennifer Hand! Her book My Yes Is On The Table is so inspiring and a reminder to come with our hands empty and simply say yes to God.
Okay, one thing you should know about Jenn is that she has the BEST stories - I’m talking *leading someone to Christ in a nude Japanese spa* kind of stories so definitely don’t skip out on this one! She also talks about the practical ways we can say yes to God in our day to day, and how our yesses look different from one another based on our seasons of life. One of the biggest takeaways from this conversation is that we don’t have to be unafraid to say “yes”, we just need to be willing to trust God in the next step.
