In this episode we continue our conversation with Dr. Shaner on the different states of awareness or bodymind awareness. We discuss which of these different modes of awareness promote peak performance. We talk about Dr. Shaner’s teacher Tohei Sensei and how he could observe and predict performance based on someone’s disposition before they performed. We then venture into the evolutionary basis of learning and behavioral change and what we are up against as a species when we want to truly change our behavior. We talk about what peak performance means in our relationships with others and how we can use these states of awareness to get along with each other in these polarizing times. It turns out it is all about performing at our best in all areas of our lives including talking with, agreeing with, and disagreeing with others. When you engage others, Is your gaze open and broad or is it myopic and small? We then go through some of the exercises in the book, Living With The
Wind At Your Back
and discuss how cultivating these recommended “habits” will help you improve in every way. Here is Dr. Shaner's TEDX talk and demonstration. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyBEIx7fCfY

Dr. Shaner began his performance development journey as a downhill skier on the Olympic Valley USA Ski Team in the early 70s. After his championship skiing career, and as a result of his worldwide exploration into many different techniques to develop and improve his performance, he attended the University of Hawaii for his Masters and Doctorate in Eastern Culture Philosophy. His Doctoral Thesis on the Japanese BodyMind Experience was written at Harvard University. During this time and as a result of his relentless pursuit of multi-cultural ideas around peak performance and incremental improvement, he began his study of Ki-Aikido. As a Martial Artist, he is an 8th degree blackbelt in Ki Development/Aikido. Shaner Sensei is the chief instructor of the Eastern Ki Federation and is the Japan HQ (Ki No Kenkyukai) advisor to the Eastern Europe/Russia Ki-Aikido Federation. He is the author of 4 books of his own as well as the founder and editor of a 37 book series about understanding the biological and evolutionary basis of productive learning and behavior.
In part 1 of this podcast we discuss the latest of his 4 books, Living with the Wind at Your Back. We delve into Dr. Shaner's background and learn how he "connected the dots" around what it takes to consistently perform at the highest levels in any endeavor. We discuss the required bodymind state for peak performance and exercises on how to achieve this state. Listeners can purchase his book at www.davidshaner.com. They can also reach Dr. Shaner at [email protected]. A trailer for the book is here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrFWX-X8qlA

John is the world’s foremost expert in transforming sales noobs into seasoned pros. As a sales trainer, manager, and serial entrepreneur, John is known for mentoring sales reps with zero business experience so they become high-six- and seven-figure salespeople.
John built software startup DataStream into a publicly traded company that sold to Infor for over $200 million. During that time, John hired and trained over 150 sales reps, sixty of whom are now business owners, CEOs, or Sales VPs. Currently, John is owner of and investor in technology companies in the Southern United States and consults with business owners and their sales teams to crush quota.
John captained The Citadel college basketball team, played against Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson, and played professional basketball in Ireland. After basketball (and Guiness), John began his sales career in Silicon Valley in computer software. On weekends, John can be found around Greenville, South Carolina, jazz clubs playing the saxophone.
