The Good Music Show

Danny and Julius

Welcome to the Good Music Show with Danny and Julius! Each episode they will give each other an album or playlist based around a theme, then talk about the music and artists that make it. They'll cover a wide spread of artists that they care deeply about: from 2Pac to Willie Nelson, John Prine to Donna Summer, Ray Charles to Future. Keeping an open mind to new styles allows Danny and Julius, as well as listeners, the opportunity to step out of individualized music bubbles and find new music to love.

Crack open a beer with us as we talk about two artists who became legends for their rebellious music.
First we'll cover one of the many greatest hits compilations from Johnny Paycheck. "Biggest Hits" covers Paycheck's time with Epic and Billy Sherrill in the producer's chair. We'll talk about his outlaw image, the good and bad sides of his rocky career, and Julius offers an interesting interpretation of "She's All I Got"
Then we'll talk about the wild debut album from Ol' Dirty Bastard - which plainly and profanely displays his personality. We'll talk at length about his need to entertain, and how that results in some fun, chaotic, and incredible rap music that only can be pulled off by ODB.
Both of these artists were unafraid to speak their mind, leading them to success despite personal struggles that interfered with that.
Songs featured in this episode:
Johnny Paycheck - Friend, Lover, Wife - Purchase
Johnny Paycheck - Fifteen Beers - Purchase
ODB - Raw Hide - Purchase
ODB - Brooklyn Zoo III (Tiger Crane) - Purchase
JPEGMAFIA - Real **** - Purchase

PLUG ALERT! Check out Danny's guest blog about Willie Nelson. It was written for the incredible music blog "I Enjoy Music" and while you're there, definitely subscribe and browse around for some fun and thoughtful music writing.
Today we take on the difficult task of finding an album that could soundtrack a party front to back, without skipping.
First we'll talk about "In Time" by the Mavericks - a timeless sounding album that brought the Mavericks back from hiatus. Combining the sounds of country, Tex-Mex, swing, blues, and good ol' rock n'roll - the Mavericks deliver an album that will have you dancing in the moonlight the whole way through.
Then we'll talk about the infamous Azealia Banks and her mind-blowing album "Broke with Expensive Taste." This album is like a dream, constantly throwing curveballs at you and testing the limits of what is possible in a rap album. Of course we'll talk about some of the controversies involved with this extremely talented rapper and singer, but we argue why her music should be given all the flowers it deserves.
Though these albums come from completely different worlds, you'll be unable to resist the skilled musicianship flooding both of these albums. And if you put on both of these albums at a party, you'll find yourself still dancing for hours after the party ends.
Songs featured in this episode:
Born to Be Blue - Purchase
Come Unto Me - Purchase
212 - Purchase
Nude Beach a-Go-Go - Purchase

Hello all, I am writing this a few weeks after we recorded to say this is the last episode dropping this year. Do not despair, we will be coming out strong into the new year with our 3 album-run deep dive episodes that we promised in the preview. But I just want to thank everyone who gave us a chance in our first year. We appreciate everyone who told us were listening, you know who you are - please message us "potato salad" if you read this! More season 2 is to come with new episodes planned that we will preview soon.
We usually try to keep it vague but time is weird, so you are allowed to know that this was recorded almost a month after the passing of Quincy Jones, and a week after the release of Kendrick Lamar's surprise album "GNX." Julius took time to mull over a playlist that pays tribute to Quincy Jones' artistry, and willingness to allow it to be remixed and sampled by rappers, which is just one of many things to celebrate about him. Links to the playlist of songs and the song they sample below!
Then we give our early reactions to GNX - an album that received mixed reviews out of the gate. We address some of those reviews and give our own takes, and what you will hear is shocking: We love it!
We cap it off by reacting to some rather disappointing news about De La Soul's cold reaction to the newly released cultural biography "High and Rising: A Book About De La Soul" by Marcus J. Moore. If you listen our "Fall" episode, you'll get more context on why we felt the need to react.
Happy new year everyone! See you in... gulp... 2025!!!!

It's Dilla Time this week on the Good Music Show. On this episode, Julius leads us in a discussion on the legendary producer/rapper J Dilla, who tragically only has one 3 album run to talk about.

We'll cover his debut solo album, his most famous album that arrived 3 days before his passing, and what should be considered his final album even though it was finished and released posthumously. Dilla made a huge impact on music in general, so of course we'll talk about the many projects that he worked on and the resulting influence.

Dilla is a fascinating and mysterious figure, so we'll attempt to bust some of the myths surrounding him and his work. We hope listeners will get a chance to look past the huge impact of Donuts to discover everything he brought to the table and appreciate his unique talent.

The Good Music Show - S2 E2 Pitching Samples: Drums - Playlist Episode
play

10/28/24 • 94 min

We had to take a few weeks off, but we are back with an episode that is almost as good as the music featured in it - AND THE MUSIC IS VERY GOOD!
The idea was to pitch songs that should be used in a sample. Such a fun thought experiment that we thought we should focus on a specific instrument so we could make this a series. So today we present the drums edition of this playlist-based concept.
First we'll get into Danny's playlist, featuring 8 songs made up of 2-song pairings that exist in similar spaces. We'll cover country, gritty rock, swampy soulful country funk, and then a random pairing of songs that happen to work fantastic together.
Then we'll get into Julius's playlist which covers grunge, Krautrock, and soul - a mix of songs that will have you dancing along while craving buttery chicken. With the last minute addition of a Bjork song it rounds out to 8 classic songs, old and new, that you can jam out to in any setting.
Songs featured in this episode:
Gettin' Happy
Hang You From the Heavens
Tulsa Turnaround (Tyler Childers Live at Farm-Aid)
Melt Not My Igloo (Common Remix)
Vitamin C
Terrapin (Conductor Williams Remix)

The Good Music Show - BONUS: Piece by Piece (2024) with Danny Vincent
play

04/28/25 • 78 min

Today on the Good Music Show - we make another drastic format change to discuss a "Good" Music Movie! Brick by Br...err I mean Piece by Piece is a LEGO animated documentary about the life and career of PHARRELL WILLIAMS. Directed by Morgan Neville, and starring several artists who've worked with Pharrell, we dissect the central question surrounding this movie: why?

Joining us is LEGO film expert Danny Vincent, who also happens to host a few great podcasts as well. Danny V guides us through the film's journey, and we ask the hard hitting questions that everyone wants to know. Is Kelis mentioned? Do they show the hat? How much do they reveal about Williams' relationship to Chad Hugo?

All of that plus extremely dated discussions of our Super Bowl predictions, Grammy's recap, and thoughts on the Lilo and Stitch teaser (not the trailer which has since come out).

06/17/24 • 57 min

Continuing our side-by-side discussion of Atlanta rap giants Future and Young Thug, today we are focusing on what they bring to the table when they are featured on other artists' songs.
DRAM, Playboi Carti, Drake, Rihanna, and Travis Scott are just a handful from a long list of artists who know that adding Young Thug and/or Future to a track is a cheat code for a great song. Both artists are able to sync up to the energy of any given track, and often choose to rap like they have something to prove.
