Ned has arrived in King's Landing to start his new job. He's met the other members of his Small Council, and echos King Robert's statement that they're all flatters and fools. He makes several discoveries: the crown is in enormous debt, there is to be a tourney held in his name, and his wife is hiding in a brothel. Thankfully the guys are here to make sense of it all. We also manage to sort out who is who between Keith and Karl Urban.
Chapter Review
Ned finally makes it to King's Landing. Before he can even take his travel clothes off, he's summoned to an urgent Small Council meeting. He meets the other members of the Small Council and learns that the urgent meeting is to plan a tournament in his honor. While his head spins at that news, he also discovers that the crown is in astonishing debt. He breaks up the meeting and leaves for the Tower of the Hand, only to be told by Petyr Baelish that his wife is waiting for him. Confused, Ned follows and finds Catelyn in a brothel. She tells him that the Valyrian steel dagger used in the attempt on Bran's life belonged to Tyrion Lannister. Ned sends Cat home immediately and wants her to raise an army. Meanwhile, he will look for evidence of Lannister nefariousness to take to Robert.

Brienne reaches the Inn at the Crossroads where she meets Gendry who she mistakes for Renly and then, less happily, she meets Rorge and Biter and their motley crew. Mackelly and Simon call for a medic.

Chapter Review:
Brienne of Tarth, Podrick Payne, Ser Hyle Hunt, and Septon Meribald plod through the Riverlands. It’s not great, with soldiers of all stripes hanging from every tree. Truly a feast for crows.

They reach the Inn at the Crossroads, which has become a haven for orphans. There are too many to count. The girl Willow has an air of command that makes Brienne wonder if she might be Arya Stark. The closest the children have to a protector is Gendry the smith. Brienne is stunned by his similarity to Renly Baratheon, although he has Robert’s build. She asks after his parentage but he’s not very forthcoming.

After sharing their food with the children, the inn is visited by armed riders. Willow threatens them with a crossbow, and they recognize Brienne. She kills Rorge, but Biter gets the better of her until a sword pierces his throat.

Characters/Places/Names/Events:
Brienne of Tarth - Charged with rescuing Sansa Stark.
Podrick Payne - Former squire to Tyrion Lannister, now traveling with Brienne.
Ser Hyle Hunt - Former captain in service to House Tarly, now traveling with Brienne.
Septon Meribald - Itinerant Septon of the Riverlands.
Willow Heddle - Child proprietress of the Inn at the Crossroads.
Gendry - Smith of King’s Landing, working at the Inn of the Crossroads.
Rorge - Brutal criminal sentenced to the Night’s Watch, now free in the Riverlands.
Biter - Even more brutal companion of Rorge.

Daenerys is sailing the Summer Sea watching her dragons grow. She receives ambiguous reports of the kind of men her father and eldest brother were, advice from Ser Jorah as to her next move, and possibly unwanted advances from Mormont. Simon and Mackelly weigh up the suitors and their suits.
Chapter Review:
Daenerys Targaryen watches her dragons play above the three ships that bear her west towards Pentos, slowly. The dragons are growing, but remain more of a liability than an asset. In her honor, the three ships have been renamed for dragons of Aegon the Conqueror and his sister wives: Balerion, Meraxes, and Vhagar.
Arstan Whitebeard provides some dragon-lore from his time in King’s Landing where he knew both her father and her brother Rhaegar. He treads carefully, but it’s not hard to see his true feelings about King Aerys. And unlike most people, he has a nuanced view of Rhaegar. “Able above all else” is not the most ringing endorsement.
Ser Jorah warns her to beware of Arstan - something’s not right about him. But Dany has too few friends to doubt those who’ve saved her life. Ser Jorah proposes a plan to both test Illyrio Mopatis’ loyalty to Dany, and to ensure it. They’ll redirect for Astapor, sell all Mopatis’ goods on the ships, and use that money to buy an army of Unsullied - the finest warriors in Essos - with whom they’ll march to Pentos.
Dany likes the plan and Ser Jorah celebrates by kissing her unbidden. A tense moment ensues.
Characters/Places/Names/Events:
Daenerys Targaryen - Last remaining descendent of the royal Targaryen line, Stormborn, Mother of Dragons, claimant to the Iron Throne of Westeros.
Viserion, Rhaegal, and Drogon - Daenerys’ dragons. The size of small dogs.
Ser Jorah Mormont - Exiled former Lord of Bear Island. Daenerys’ Lord Commander of her Queensguard and loyal advisor.
Illyrio Mopatis - Wealthy merchant of Pentos who cared for the young Daenerys and her brother Viserys.
Strong Belwas - Fighter sent by Mopatis to bring Daenerys safely to Pentos.
Arstan Whitebeard - Westerosi squire to Strong Belwas. Seems to know a lot about King’s Landing and the Targaryens.
Pentos - City on the west coast of Essos.
Summer Sea - Sea to the south of Essos.
Unsullied - Eunuch slave soldiers. Renowned for their fighti

Daenerys and the khalasar have made it to Vaes Dothrak. Daeny plans a night evening with her brother that goes very awry. We also get Jorah's take on how the Dothraki would do in battle in Westeros. We tell you all about it and give you as many insights as we can pack into one episode. Plus, Simon shares a story that might just put a smile on your face.
Chapter Review:
Daenerys Targaryen, her brother Viserys, Ser Jorah Mormont, and the rest of Khal Drogo's khalasar have finally made it to Vaes Dothrak, the lone Dothraki city. Daeny is surprised to see how big, but sparse, the city is. We learn that Viserys is about out of patience waiting for his promised 10,000 Dothraki warriors that he was promised for Daeny's hand in marriage. We also find out that Ser Jorah seems to have no respect left for his supposed king. Jorah tells Daeny that the Dothraki have the advantage against a Westerosi army in the field, but would not be able to sustain a siege.
The question is whether Robert would be smart enough to utilize the advantage of the castles, or if he would rush to meet the Dothraki in battle. When Daeny is told Khal Drogo will be away their first evening in the city, she plans a nice dinner with her brother, where she plans to present him gifts of traditional Dothraki clothing. Things go wrong when Viserys thinks Daeny has commanded him to her, and get worse when he sees her gifts. A heated sibling dispute ensues, leaving Daeny sad and bruised and Viserys furious and bleeding from his face.
Characters/Places/Names/Events:
Daenerys Targaryen - Khaleesi to a Dothraki khalasar and younger sister to Viserys.
Viserys Targaryen - Deposed heir to the Iron Throne.
Ser Jorah Mormont - Exiled knight from Westeros. Sworn sword to Viserys Targaryen.
Khal Drogo - The leader of a large Dothraki khalasar. Husband to Daenerys Targaryen.
Cohollo - Bloodrider to Khal Drogo.
Irri, Jiqui, and Doreah - Daeny's handmaidens.
Bloodrider - Sworn protectors of Dothraki khals.
Dothraki Sea - Vaes Dothrak is the only city of the Dothraki people. It is located in the northeast of the vast Dothraki sea.

Sansa overhears disquieting news of the battle, has a run-in with Sandor Clegane, and learns from an elated Ser Dontos Hollard that the battle has turned as reinforcements have arrived from the east in the form of the Tyrells, Tywin Lannister, and somehow Renly Baratheon. Simon and Mackelly mourn the missed opportunities.
Chapter Review:
Lancel Lannister brings news of the battle. Things are not going well. As the king was pulled back to safety, the men lost heart and threw down their arms. There are enemy forces at multiple gates, Tyrion is likely dead, and the defenders are outmatched. Cersei Lannister takes all this as evidence that Joffrey should be further withdrawn. Lancel objects but Cersei insists, smacks him in a wound in his side, and storms out.
Sansa tries to reassure the frightened ladies, but then uses the opportunity to go to her chamber. Figuring some distance between herself and Ser Ilyn Payne is prudent. There she finds the Hound waiting for her. He offers to rescue her and take her north, but she’d rather take her chances here. He leaves. She takes a well-earned nap.
She’s awoken some time later by Ser Dontos who is cock-a-hoop with joy, but barely coherent. When she calms him down enough, it transpires that Stannis’ forces have been routed by an army comprising Tywin’s force from the West, and the combined forces of the Reach apparently (and puzzlingly) led by Renly.
Characters/Places/Names/Events:
Sansa Stark - Eldest daughter of Lord Eddard Stark and Catelyn Tully. Betrothed to Joffrey Baratheon. Captive of the Lannisters.
Queen Cersei Lannister - Widow of King Robert Baratheon, twin sister of Ser Jamie Lannister. Mother of King Joffrey Baratheon.
King Joffrey Baratheon First of His Name - Bastard son of Jaime Lannister and his twin sister Queen Cersei Lannister.
Tyrion “The Imp” Lannister - Brother to Queen Cersei. Acting Hand of the King.
Ser Dontos Hollard - Last member of house Hollard. Saved from execution on King Joffrey’s name day by Sansa Stark.
Ser Ilyn Payne - Executioner.
Ser Lancel Lannister - Cousin and lover to Queen Cersei, spy for Tyrion Lannister.
Sandor Clegane, The Hound - Member of the Kingsguard and personal protector of King Joffrey.
Tywin Lannister - Father of Cersei, Tyrion, and Jamie.

Daenerys Targaryen is embracing her role as khaleesi of the Dothraki khalasar. Her brother Viserys isn't fitting in so well. When she gives a command that applies to him, she Wakes the Dragon. Only it's Viserys who ends up sobbing in the dirt.
Chapter Review:
In chapter 23 of "A Game of Thrones", from the "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series, Daenerys Targaryen gets her first look at the Dothraki Sea. She finds it beautiful. When she gives the command not to follow her, while she rides into it, her brother Viserys is enraged. She pushes back for the first time and as she waits for the retaliation Jhogo whips Viserys in the neck and drags him to the ground. Daeny doesn't want him hurt, but makes him walk behind the khalasar, one of the worst punishments in Dothraki culture. Daeny and Ser Jorah discuss Viserys being unfit to rule, and the smallfolk not caring who rules them. The chapter ends with Daeny being pregnant, on her 14th nameday.
