play

10/25/18 • 26 min

(Note: skip to 16:29 for the BEST costume for closeted/ questioning MtFs seeking last-minute ideas.) Listener Jaylah is still male-presenting, and she asks if she can use a Halloween party as an opportunity to girl up for the first time. Her important colleagues and awesome new friends will be at the party. Or will it raise too many eyebrows? The tricky theme for the party just increases the challenge level. We say go for it, but of course you need an awesome costume, so we give lots of good suggestions. The Gender Rebels believe in you, Jaylah!

How do you know you're transgender or ready for transition? In this episode we answer a question a lot of listeners have asked. Do the thoughts and feelings I have make me transgender? What if I'm not ready for that? Am I really transgender enough to transition? Other trans people I've seen seem so much more advanced than me. On this episode we'll discuss how to deal with dysphoria and questions about whether transition is right for you.

Here's a link to the DSM V. This one's big and expensive. Don't buy it, but if you see it in the reference section of your library and have an hour to kill, it's fun to flip through. "Gender Dysphoria" is what we usually talk about on TGR, but the whole book is pretty cool, according to Kath.

Ugh, MORE talk about the Philadelphia Trans Wellness Conference?? Yes but this will be the last episode where we go over the PTWC the until next year, we promise. But all you wonderful listeners who stopped to talk with us at PTWC got us drunk on dopamine, so all this Philly material is kind of your fault. But it also brings up the importance of community, even to introverted misanthropes like ourselves. While online communities are invaluable and even lifesaving, there's just something about being in a room full of people like you.

What is about crossdressing that draws some people to it? Is it a turn-on? A way to relieve gender dysphoria? Rebellion against the binary? Or something else. In this week's episode, we answer a listener's question about crossdressing and motivations. Our listener asks "What drives this feeling for me? I kind of have a hard time answering this. There have been a lot of times in my life where it has been a fetish of sorts for me and I wonder if that is attributable to the fact that it was my secret. I say this because now that I'm able to paint my toes, put on makeup once in a while, and wear some female undergarments to work, that fetish aspect has gone away. It's more just something that makes me feel good about myself. I guess I'm wondering if other crossdressers experienced their fetish transform into something more subdued when they begin to be open with people close to them. I view this as a healthy development for me."

The Gender Rebels Podcast - Being Transgender in the Star Wars Galaxy

So with the Gender Rebels logo as it is, why don't we talk about Star Wars? This episode is inspired by iTunes reviewer Settlechaos who writes "First of all this podcast has nothing to do with Star Wars." Well, Settlechoas, that is about to change. In this episode we are looking at what life would be like for a transgender person, droid, clone, or alien in the Star Wars Galaxy. And by the way this episode will contain spoilers - in case you happen to be in that small Venn overlap of people who want to see the Star Wars films but just haven't quite managed to get around it to.

You KNOW we have opinions on everything from "Lola" to "Walk On The Wild Side" to "Dude Looks Like A Lady". The good, the bad, and the strange. And this is just part one!!

Links galore:

Jasper the Colossal Markers and Beer live version. It slaps.

Make famous friends by cultivating fandoms for less- famous people. Faith admires awesome YouTuber Lindsey Ellis -- and she reteweeted one of Faith's dog pics!

Lake Baikal is a super deep lake. Terrifyingly deep.

SNL Ashlee Simpson debacle.

Okay, music! In this ep, we discussed:
Aerosmith's Dude Looks Like A Lady. Faith's judgment: Not a good song.

Here's a picture of Vince Neil of Mötley Crüe (not Poison; apologies to both Mr. Crüe and Mr. Poison), for reference.

Hair metal, for reference including two cool lists of Top 10 Best and Bottom 5 Worst Hair Metal Bands.

The Kinks Lola. Faith's judgment: Good song but not on her mix or karaoke list.

Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground Take a Walk on the Wild Side (Faith's judgment: good song and not on her karaoke list) and Candy Says (Faith's judgment: same-- good song and not on her karaoke list)

Learn about:
Candy Darling !
Andy Warhol's Factory !
Joe Delassandro !

The Community commercial where they say "meet different people!"

Many familiar crabs are of the genus Cancer

Suzanne Vega As Girls Go. Faith's judgment: not a good song.

Matt Baum's Culture Cruise on YouTube talks about the representation of gays in TV and movies.

Madonna's What It Feels Like For A Girl. Faith's judgment: a good song.

Garbage Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go), Androgyny, and Bleed Like Me . Faith's judgment: 100% awesome songs. Bonus is their cover of Candy Says that's also spectacular.

The JT Leroy literary hoax

Buy Faith's book! It's the mid 1990s, and a high school guy in Georgia is grappling with his queerness, his faith, his friends, and his future in Disgusta by Faith DaBrooke.
