Naisten laji – Kirja jalkapallosta IN THIS EPISODE...

In this special episode ahead of the 2022 Women’s Euros beginning this week in England, Rich spoke with author Johanna Ruohonen about her new book Naisten Laji, the origins of women’s football in Finland and Europe and how things have changed – and where inequality still remains.

Johanna describes how the book came about, speaking with female players past and present, hopes for the future and how the Helmarit and Kansallinen Liiga can provide positive role models for the next generation of women’s footballers and coaches in Finland.

(KuPS Kuopio image from KuPS.fi pre Vorskla match)

After the craziness of the Euros – the FFS team was crazy-busy representing Finland across the world's media – you MAY have noticed!), crazy-tired staying up until 1:00 AM watching too many games of football, and crazy-hot (at least here in Finland) – it's been nice to calm down and return to normality.

Mark W and Rich get together to look back at the recent European action for HJK Helsinki, KuPS Kuopio, Inter Turku and Honka, and look forward to upcoming ties for HJK and KuPS.

We reflect on a comment from Joni Kauko, about transfers to Brexit Britain, which seems to have started having an effect on Finnish players. We also look back at the last month of Veikkausliiga action, which has giving us a league table that is tight at both ends.

For our final show of 2021, we decided to broadcast it as a Facebook Live video and publish the results as a series of podcasts over the Christmas holiday. This was recorded on Monday 20.12.2021.

In this episode, we are also joined by Mark H, fresh from putting the kids to bed! We are also joined by FFS fan Erno, so we talk with both of them about Tim Sparv retiring. And we ask Erno's opinion on the future of the Huuhkajat without him, Paulus Arajuuri and Joona Toivio in the squad.

We talk about the confirmed fixtures for the 2022-23 Nations League, which sees Finland play four games in 12 days in early-June. This is also the time for the launch our new, 2022 range of FFS merch at https://www.teepublic.com/user/finnish-football-show

For our final show of 2021, we decided to broadcast it as a Facebook Live video and publish the results as a series of podcasts over the Christmas holiday. This was recorded on Monday 20.12.2021.

The FFS team were grateful to Boris Wistuba-Marino for jumping into our Facebook Live show right at the beginning. Boris is a youth coach at Espoon Palloseura, Kitman at HJK Helsinki and the 'funny sidekick' on the Pallo ja Pullo podcast.

Boris talked to us about the recent announcement that Time Sparv will retire from playing football 😥 and how he came to be a youth coach in Finland.

In this episode, the FFS team is missing one or two key players. Not because of injury or poor form, but because of holidays. Mark has a had a challenging summer and is taking a well-earned break. Similarly, Keke seems to have ventured overseas for a family vacation.

But we didn't want to keep you waiting, so this episode is Mark W and Rich, possibly joined by Keke. We will discuss our recent predictions competition (if a survey that collects answers but offers no prize can be called a competition!) We will then look at how the opening 7 rounds of Veikkausliiga action has panned-out. Who is leading the table? Who has already fallen behind? And why does Rich keep trolling me about the form of SJK?

I have to also give a shout out to Kevin Cumming in our Facebook group. He found us recently and has listened to the entire back catalogue. Kevin - THANK YOU! 🙏🏻

IN THIS EPISODE...

The FFS team are back today to review last week's games for both the women's national team, the Helmarit, and the men's national team, the Huuhkajat. Mark W, Keke, Mark H and Rasmus discuss two Euro 2025 qualifiers for the Helmarit, both close-fought games against the Netherlands.

The Huuhkajat, however, provided pre-Euro 2024 practice for Portugal and Scotland, while also trying a few new things themselves. They hear about Keke's trip to Glasgow and finish up with an update on manager, Markku 'Rive' Kanerva's future.

Merry-go-round = Carousel or karuselli

This is the episode that Mark H has been promising/threatening for a couple of weeks. The team discuss the recent spate of sackings, announcements of resignations (pre-signations?) and rumoured manager transfers for 2022. Attention then turns to SJK Seinäjoki, who are firmly embroiled in this silly-season and whose fans are about to take action and boycott the upcoming game with FC Inter Turku.
