Piers Tempest on Producing The Wife, Killing Bono, Churchill, Military Wives and Love Wedding Repeat
The Filmmakers Podcast
08/17/20 • 71 min
This week Giles welcomes back Ian Sharp from Sharphouse Films to co-host our interview with Piers Tempest, producer on The Wife, Killing Bono, Military Wives and Love Wedding Repeat about the craft and intrigue of producing at different levels of the industry. That’s right, it’s a full-on producing masterclass.
Piers tells us his route into film, how he got into the world of production, avoiding sharks and throwing himself into productions to learn the ropes. Ian quizzes Piers on development finance and pre-selling films to ensure they have a commercial life after production.
How do you deal with a difficult agent? How do you move from different budget brackets? And what are the benefits of developing your own material with a writer or director? Piers generously offers a huge amount of advice in all of these areas.

How to Move from Commercials, Shorts and Docs to Indie Features with Ben Mole & Lucinda Rhodes Thakrar.
The Filmmakers Podcast
08/03/20 • 72 min
Today we welcome back producer Lucinda Rhodes Thakrar as well as director Ben Mole to talk about their WW2 indie Behind the Line: Escape to Dunkirk.
We dive into how writer/director Ben Mole came up with a fresh concept for a WW2 thriller, how Lucinda and rallied an art department meticulous enough to handle 1940’s’ period accuracy - and how a simple coffee in a Colchester car park can lead to a great collaboration.
Just like a classic genre flick, Behind the Line was shot back to back with this years earlier release We Go in at Dawn. Ben and Lucinda tell us how they did it without compromising on the high standards of a period war film.

How to Make a Independent Sports Crime Drama with the team behind ‘Break’
The Filmmakers Podcast
07/20/20 • 66 min
On this episode, we welcome the team behind Break, a competitive sports/crime drama from first-time writer/director Michael Elkin, first-time producer Terri Dwyer and veteran producer Dean Fisher
Giles discusses scripting with Michael and the challenges of getting the film financed and greenlit with Terri and Dean, including their pitch deck and presentation strategies to individual investors. They also talk about purposefully incorporating international elements to the story such as filming in China as well as on location and set in the UK.
As an actor/director Michael lets us in on his approach to working with the cast, Terri gives tips on balancing her producer role with her own role as an actor. Dean provides unique and empowering examples of how a film of this budget level and genre can be marketed, sold and self-distributed in the UK, even during the current COVID social restrictions.
