The Fake Ass Book Club

Moni & Kat

The Book Club is Fake but the Talk is REAL! The F.A.B. Podcast serves cocktails while also serving up stories with a side dish of humor, a sprinkle of sarcasm, and an occasional expletive as garnish. Every hump day, tune in as Moni and Kat playfully and thoughtfully explore compelling books and topics as they relate to the human experience, filtered through the lens as black women in the midwest. Let each episode illustrate the power of storytelling and how it connects us all. This podcast is a reason for them to connect as friends, as individuals, and with their listeners. It’s like therapy you didn't know you needed...along with some laughs! You may come for the books but you'll stay for the vibes!!

The Fake Ass Book Club - Episode 71: "Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul" Review
play

09/14/22 • 71 min

The Fake Ass Book Club is back again! No book this week. This week's review features the movie, "Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul''. Written, directed, and produced by Adamma Ebo, this film stars Regina Hall as Trinitie Childs – the proud first lady of a Southern Baptist mega church, who together with her husband Pastor Lee-Curtis Childs (Sterling K. Brown). Their ministry once served a congregation in the tens of thousands. After a scandal forces their church to temporarily close, Trinitie and Lee-Curtis must reopen their church and rebuild their congregation to make the biggest comeback that commodified religion has ever seen." Cue the drama! Moni and Kat get into the nitty gritty of "Black Church '' and the seemingly pervasive culture of greed, materialism, and homophobia plaguing so-called "mega churches". You won't want to miss this episode!! Bonus footage of this conversation will be available once our patreon launches in October. Stay Tuned for details!! (https://deadline.com/2022/09/adamme-and-adanne-ebo-with-daniel-kaluuya-discuss-1235108901/) _Trigger Warning: _Adult Content & Language, satire and religious critique, please be advised this show is for adults 18 and up and the open minded. If you are easily offended by open conversations and critiques on religion, this episode might not be for you. No harm intended...just talking it out. Dedication To our listeners always, also to the G.O.A.T. Show Notes: ** About the Movie:** https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HonkforJesus.SaveYour_Soul. ** About the Author:** https://www.ejimeproductions.com/about https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/adanneebo *KC pastor berates congregation over watch: Reference made last week https://nowthisnews.com/news/pastor-berates-broke-congregation-for-neglecting-to-buy-him-a-luxury-watch *Jordan Peterson: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jordan_Peterson *Eddie Long: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/eddie-long-megachurch-pastor-embroiled-scandal-dies-n707106 He was the pastor this film seems to be loosely based on. He died in 2017. *Stranger than Fiction: *Moni shared a story about a "levitating" visiting pastor at her husband's family church. His ascension happened so slowly (while being completely obstructed by the pulpit), that when his head peeked over the top and gradually became visible he looked like he was floating. It didn't help that he made a super weird and loud noise while making his assent think guttural moans while simultaneously slamming his hands down on the altar over and over. So weird! It was all too much and Moni had to retreat to the church basement quickly as not to lose it in the sanctuary in front of the entire congregation. Turns out he just used his walker to stand up and liked to put on a show. Why is she like this!!
