The Expat Money Show - With Mikkel Thorup - 196: How To Make Friends With Warlords And Other Dangerous Individuals – Kolja Spori
play

07/13/22 • 74 min

Dr. Kolja Spori, Formula 1 Agent and Austrian Economist who has visited all 193 countries of the world. In his quest to seek truth and liberty, he met freedom fighters, guerrillas and warlords, such as the FARC leaders "Black Death" and Tanja Nijmeijer in the Colombian mountains, the Russian Nightwolf "Chirurg" in Crimea, Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov in Grozny, and Liberia's putschist Prince Johnson in Monrovia. Kolja narrowly missed the bombing of Donbas rebel leader Alexander Sakharchenko in the Separatist Cafè Donezk, and he won a staredown against US "Defence Secretary" Donald Rumsfeld in an elevator in Batumi. He is often known by his nickname Dr. Dangerzone and is the Ambassador of Germany to the World’s youngest country: Liberland, and he also happens to be a very dear friend of mine, so I’m really excited to have him on our show!

A GLIMPSE INTO MY CONVERSATION WITH KOLJA

  • What an intense conversation with Kolja on the most dangerous cities and countries you can travel to and what can happen at any moment while you are there.
  • What life is like when you have visited every UN country in the world, especially war zones...
  • We talk about THE most dangerous capital in the world and what the government does and doesn’t do to protect its citizens.
  • On the other hand, we talk about Russia and the freedom from government and what it’s like in Siberia. Such dichotomy.
  • I really wanted to understand what is it about these dangerous countries or the war zone that attracted Kolja to want to visit and see them, and why he continues to visit them again and again.
  • Listen in as Kolja describes war zones and crisis areas in Belfast, Northern Ireland... what it felt like and the process he undertook to be able to process what was happening... countries like Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and the Congo... each one more dangerous than the other
  • How hiring a local taxi driver in these horrific war zone areas who can explain why after so many years these things are still happening, can impact who you are as a person and why it’s so important to understand the truth.
  • Find out which city and country are Kolja’s most favourite of all the countries he has visited in his lifetime. I bet you’ll never guess.
  • How the information we get on television or in our mainstream media is the direct opposite of the reality on the ground, as we discuss several different countries and what life is actually like living there.
  • Extreme Traveller Congress... from billionaire to backpacker, how 150 participants come together, no matter what they’ve done in the past, and why it just doesn’t matter, all for the love of travel and adventure.
  • We discuss in detail what life is like for Kolja now, living in Monaco, after spending years travelling... is this still a passion for him?
  • I wanted to understand what Kolja has learned from visiting all of these different types of war zone countries and meeting the players that are involved? What have been his insights?
  • If you have an extra $250,000 sitting around and want to do something so radical that almost no one else on earth has done or even heard about, then listen as Kolja pitches you on his next adventure of 2023.

CONCLUSION

This was a fun hour spent with my friend, smoking a cigar and talking about our radical travels throughout our lives. I’m not a jealous person, but wow, Kolja’s experiences have been just mind-blowing for me. If you’re viewing war zones through the lens of mainstream media and believe what you see and read, this episode will open your eyes to the truth of what is actually happening on the ground.

The Expat Money Show - With Mikkel Thorup - 153: Creating A Support Network For The Worlds Poorest – Gret Glyer
play

09/15/21 • 63 min

Gret Glyer is the founder of DonorSee, a support network for the world's poorest. Their Mission is to become the world's fastest-growing charity platform and usher in a new age of global charity by raising the industry's standards for transparency, immediacy, and innovation.

WHAT WE DISCUSSED IN THIS INTERVIEW:

  • Exactly how to make a difference in the life of an infant child, a widow or an orphaned child....and how to help them possibly provide for themselves for a lifetime!
  • Who really benefits from donating as little as $10 a month to people from the poorest country on the planet?
  • Why it’s essentially impossible for people from developing countries like Malawi to get themselves out of poverty with the system we have without some help from outside sources
  • How your donation can provide simple necessities like formula and food for a child for an entire year.
  • A common myth about why people from Africa are some of the poorest countries in the world... This is an important concept to understand when you reach into your pocket to help and why it’s so important to help.
  • How to guarantee your donation goes directly to the project that you have chosen.
  • What happens after you donate? Listen in as Gret explains what the protocol is and how your money will be spent.
  • This is tax-deductible -- I would much rather see my subscribers voluntarily giving money to help families in need instead of it being wasted on taxes.

CONCLUSION:

What a heart-wrenching conversation with Gret Glyer. Listening to his stories of living in the poorest country in the world for three years led to the founding of DonorSee. Gret believes relationships are the heartbeat of effective charity. His platform enables donors to donate directly to people in need and see the impact of their gifts with a video update on every donation. I would like to encourage you to donate; even just a small amount will make a big impact. You’ll understand my urgency once you’ve listened to Gret’s story of living overseas and how important DonorSee is.

The Expat Money Show - With Mikkel Thorup - 235: Panama’s Offshore Scene: A Deep Dive into Global Strategies
play

03/22/23 • 34 min

Today I am going to recap the last incredible week in Panama, beginning with a hugely informative conference for private clients and culminating in my 40th birthday party.

The last week has been unbelievable. Clients flew in from every corner of the world, literally from everywhere.

I am still decompressing from a busy and eventful week, but I wanted to first stop and take the time to record this episode for you and update you all on some other goings on here at Expat Money while everything is fresh on my mind.

PANAMA CONFERENCE AND BIRTHDAY PARTY RECAP

  • I recap the start of the week with the investor's conference I put on in Panama with private clients from diverse places like Germany, Thailand and New Zealand attending.
  • I explain the difference between my "private" clients and my "regular" clients and how you can become one!
  • This week highlights why I like to get to know my prospective clients personally before I take them on - because I spend a LOT of time with them!
  • The type of information provided at this conference would literally take months or even years of research to acquire on your own - offshore investing and residency is definitely not a 'DIY' type of thing.
  • Meanwhile, we also formally launched The Expats Guide on Moving to Mexico, which has already launched to #1 in the "libertarianism" category on Amazon!
  • I also provide a preview of the upcoming trips I am planning in the next year for private clients. If these sounds interesting to you, read this important letter and consider if becoming a private is a good fit for you.
  • Finally, I reflect on my 40th birthday party that was made so special by the 150 + attendees who travelled from places like Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland, the UK, Brazil, Colombia, Canada, USA, etc. - all culminating in an amazing fireworks display!
  • Ultimately, these events are about building a community and realizing that we aren't the crazy ones out there. We in the Expat Money community are building a better and brighter future for ourselves while much of the world goes mad.

CONCLUSION

I hope you enjoyed today's episode in which I've provided just a small glimpse into the type of conferences, tours and celebrations I put together for my friends and clients in the Expat Money community.

I want to once again thank everyone who joined us in Panama and came out to celebrate my birthday.

And as I said earlier, and it really is worth repeating; this party is not about me...

It's about you.

We are not just some online group or a podcast, no. We are a real-life community of people who understand what is going on in the world and will actually do something about it.

Our plan is to do many more private events this year for clients, so I hope this episode will serve as a great preview of what's to come should you decide to become one. Enjoy!

The Expat Money Show - With Mikkel Thorup - 063: How To Protect Your Assets So No-One Would Ever Dare To Sue You - Joel Nagel
play

01/30/19 • 100 min

In this interview with Joel Nagel, we discuss what asset protection is, how to protect your assets, the offshore markets, estate planning and how to make sure no-one would ever dare to sue you. Grab our brand new infographic report called “15 Global Strategies to Protect Your Wealth” for free that Joel and I created.

Interview with Joel Nagel

Joel Nagel is an internationally-recognized lawyer, visionary, and strategic thinker. He has been featured in countless business publications across the world and quoted in U.S. News & World Report as well as in Forbes Magazine. He is the founder and managing partner of Nagel & Associates, LLC, which specializes in international law, estate planning, global commercial transactions, and asset protection. And has been the Ambassador to Austria and other countries in Europe.

What are the Offshore Markets?

We start the episode off with two important definitions: What is Asset Protection? and What are the Offshore Markets?

Investopedia’s Definition of Offshore

“What is Offshore? – “Offshore” refers to a location outside of one’s national boundaries, whether or not that location is land- or water-based. The term “offshore” may be used to describe foreign banks, corporations, investments and deposits. A company may legitimately move offshore for the purpose of tax avoidance or to enjoy relaxed regulations.” I ask Joel Nagel some questions like: “Why do you use the offshore markets? Is there anything illegal, dodgy, or unethical about using the offshore markets in this manner?”

What is Asset Protection?

Investopedia’s Definition of Asset Protection: “Asset protection is the concept of and strategies for guarding one’s wealth. Asset protection is a type of financial planning intended to protect one’s assets from creditor claims. Individuals and business entities use asset protection techniques to limit creditors’ access to certain valuable assets while operating within the bounds of debtor-creditor law.” I also ask Joel Nagel some questions about asset protection like: “Why do we need asset protection? Why don’t people just use a normal asset protection lawyer and keep things onshore, or inside the USA?” Hear how Joel Nagel describes asset protection and why he decided to practice this field of law, and the very personal reasons for doing so as it will help you understand why asset protection is so important.

Estate Planning

Joel talks about how using the offshore markets and international trusts are more than just asset protection. Estate Planning is often just as important and is one of the three main reasons people go down this road. Listen in to the complete episode to hear the third major reason you might want to consider the offshore markets for more than just asset protection. Hear how the offshore markets can set your family up for generational wealth with Estate Planning and how you can responsibly pass your wealth on to your descendants.

How To Protect Your Assets

In this interview with Joel Nagel, we go into depth on multiple strategies you can use to make creditors double think about coming after you and attorneys terrified to even consider suing you. For a complete outline on how to protect your assets download “15 Global Strategies to Protect Your Wealth” in PDF for free right now.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Joel has really become a mentor to me these last couple of years. As he says in our interview: “we are cut from the same cloth" and I tend to agree with him. Have you ever wondered how someone from the USA could end up living and working in Central America? What would the draw be and why would you stay? This is the episode to listen to if Central America is where you've contemplated investing, retiring or a little of both. When Mike Cobb starting building communities in Central America, they believed that their market would be for investors to buy and to rent out as vacation homes. This was true until the baby boomers decided they could have it both ways. They could buy International Real Estate, rent out 6 months of the year and pay down their mortgage. Then as 'snow birds' spend the winter months in a fabulous community in a country that offers a high standard of living with a low cost of living.

Time Machine & Path of Progress

Mikk Cobb, what does that mean? Time Machine & Path of Progress? If you could go back 20 years and see how the path of progress was, you'd be rich. I'm sure many of you have dreamt about the 'what if's' If I only knew what the economy would be like. You still have time with an investment in Belize or an investment in Nicaragua.

Investment in Belize

Let's talk about investments in Belize and the time machine & path of Progress. In Belize, you're likely going back in time about 5-10 years. If you're talking about Nicaragua, it's more like 20 years. It truly is the best time to make an investment in Belize. Are you interested in an investment in Belize? Mike Cobb discusses what is available, what life is like in Belize and what you can expect from your investment in Belize. Are you an early baby boomer? Do you find yourself wondering if you've saved enough money to have the life you're accustomed to in the US or Canada? If not, again, this is the episode that is so important to give a listen to.

Offshore Banking in Belize

Are you an American or Canadian entrepreneur? with a viable business and paying high taxes? Let's talk about offshore banking in Belize. Life in Belize is warm and sunny most of the year. Crime is low, medical care is fantastic, in fact, they welcome medical tourism. Therefore, the real question is 'why would you stay in your home country when you can set up offshore banking in Belize and pay next to nothing in taxes and have a lower cost of living and a higher quality of life'. I know that sounds like a paradox, but it's true.

Investment in Nicaragua

Talking about investment in Nicaragua, Mike Cobb and his partner have been at this a long time and have built their company ECI from the ground up. They know what they are talking about and are an integral part of helping to develop a country so that Americans & Canadians have a resource to follow through on. Life is peaceful, safe and this may surprise many of you, they have international hospitals, so medical care is on par with the US or Canada. play

02/19/25 • 33 min

It’s no secret I am a big fan of Latin America. I’ve called Panama my home for the past five years, and my last two children were born in Chile and Brazil. Why are so many freedom-minded individuals and families choosing Latin America as their expat destination? Today’s guest, my good friend Andrea Martinez, is here to share her insights. Originally from Ecuador and now living in Panama, Andrea has firsthand experience with the expat lifestyle. As a former pediatrician turned real estate developer, she has helped countless families make the transition to Latin America. In this episode, Andrea breaks down why more people than ever are fleeing high-tax, more expensive countries in favour of the freedoms and opportunities found south of the border. Enjoy!

TODAY’S CONVERSATION WITH ANDREA MARTINEZ HIEBERT

  • Tune in to learn why migration to Latin America has doubled in the last decade and what’s driving the trend.
  • Discover how weather, taxation, and government overreach are pushing people to look South of the Border for their "Plan-B."
  • Listen as Andrea explains how affordable Latin American real estate offers expats a chance to live in luxury at a fraction of Western prices.
  • Understand why cultural and political shifts in the West—especially regarding education and family values—are prompting concerned parents to relocate to Latin America.
