Our guest today, Emily, has a family split between the US and Germany. Emily, her husband, their young daughter, and their pets are based in the States now, but have considered a move to Germany several times. All Thinking Is Comparison with Samar
The Expat Cast
01/13/22 • 47 min
Season 6, Episode 15. Once upon a time, two friends on a train trip to Nuremberg passed a bit of graffiti that would haunt then for years to come. Nicole & Samar have been quoting that graffiti since 2020, and now they're here to share all their thoughts about it with you.
"All thinking is comparison."
The phrase has come to be a moniker for discussing geographical backgrounds, diversity, and privilege. For people living abroad, the phrase gets at the new awarenesses that come with removing yourself from the water you've been swimming in and learning to function in somewhere completely new.

Cheesy Christmas Movies, German Style with Aspen
The Expat Cast
12/23/21 • 43 min
Season 6, Episode 13. The best thing about Christmas in the US is the cheesy Christmas movies on Lifetime, Hallmark, and now even Netflix. Aspen & Nicole are two Americans in Germany who love trash movies, so we asked ourselves, do these wonderful-terrible movies exist in Germany?
To find out, we watched Über Weihnachten and This Is Love. Both are German productions released on Netflix that try to itch that same scratch - or dare I say jingle those bells. How do these two movies stand up to the test? Are they good-bad, or just bad-bad?
Merry Christmas & guten Rutsch / good slide into the New Year! The Expat Cast will be back January 6, 2022.

Finding Therapy in Germany with Julian
The Expat Cast
11/18/21 • 41 min
Season 6, Episode 8. Let's talk about how to get mental health support when living abroad.
One great thing about living in Germany is the health care - for many reasons, but notably, most public health insurances cover mental health therapy. It's a wonderful thing, but like all things in Germany, there is a lot of paperwork and bureaucracy required to find a therapist, get the therapy approved, and start the actual process.
Today's guest, Julian, is from Venezuela and has been living in Germany for 5 years. In 2020, he hit a point where he needed help. He began his journey to find a therapist in his current home, Berlin. He shares why he decided to seek therapy and why it has been so valuable, over a year later. Most importantly, we get into HOW to seek therapy, from where to research doctors to who needs to sign off on the treatment and more.
This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. If your insurance doesn't cover therapy or you'd prefer to have more options when choosing your therapist, BetterHelp is a fantastic alternative to going through the German healthcare system. Save 10% on your first month of professional therapy at BetterHelp.com/ExpatCast.

The Grass Is Greenest Where You Water It with Steph
The Expat Cast
06/17/21 • 37 min
Season 5, Episode 24. Steph is a fellow expat podcaster, host of the great show Transcontinental Overload. She was born and raised in Germany, but her love for and comfort with the English language made her certain she'd one day move to London.
She did, and the classic thing happened: one year abroad turned into a lifetime. After years in England, Steph moved to Silicon Valley in California, USA. She was ready to return to her heart's home of England, but life had other plans, and it was off to Austin, Texas. Steph struggled to accept that move, and after a couple years of trying, she relocated her family to England - only to discover that it wasn't the place she'd left, and she wasn't the person she was when she last lived there.
So it was back to Austin, for now. As she looks forward to the empty nest stage of life, Steph finds herself at peace with it all - with her multinational family, with her multicultural self-identity, with the uncertainty of where she'll end up next. Because one thing she learned from a cheesy embroidered pillow has proven to be true. The grass is greenest where you water it.
