A decade after Tony’s murder, Rosalio and Calvin are on trial. The moment when the prosecution will finally go head to head against them. Each side will duke it out. And in the end, the jury will give a verdict. In theory, this is the ultimate form of justice. A definitive statement on what happened and who's to blame. Beyond a reasonable doubt. But that’s not what happened here.

Now it’s a heavyweight battle between the prosecution and Calvin’s attorney. The case is mostly circumstantial. They don’t have the gun. They don’t have the person who actually pulled the trigger. They have no physical evidence. But they do have a witness... someone who allegedly ties Calvin Jones directly to the murder.

Within days after Tony Virgilio’s murder, police established a theory and a motive: Calvin and Rosalio hired someone to kill Tony. And they did it for money. With Tony dead, they had a chance to collect on what today would be a 1 million dollar insurance payout. Suspiciously, that theory benefits certain parties, from the prosecution to the insurance company.

Calvin Jones spent 30 years behind bars. But it wasn’t for shooting Tony. It was for CONSPIRACY to kill. It was the agreement to commit the murder that landed Calvin in prison. Without a link to the gunman, there’s no way Calvin gets convicted. In the final episode of The Estate, Alex and Angelina look for the gunman, while Alex tries to make peace with his relationship with his father.

Podcast Q&A

Why did you start this show?

The Estate was born out of a question that rolled around in my head for over two decades: whether my father was involved in the 1973 murder of one of his business partners. The desire to know the truth pushed me to investigate the case more fully.

What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?

My dream is for ‘The Estate’ to push others, particularly the federal government, to scrutinize police and prosecutorial practices from the 1970s and 1980s and revisit convictions from that era. Barring that, I hope it prompts listeners to explore and preserve their own family stories.

Which episode should someone start with?

The first one!

Which have been your favourite episodes so far?

I don't play favorites!

Which episode are you most proud of?

The last one. I will say no more.

What is your vision for your show?

In a dream world, The Estate would lead to the discovery of new evidence about the 1973 murder of Tony Virgilio and the investigation of my father and Calvin Jones.

What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?

I loved the first season of Serial but was also a huge fan of Welcome To Night Vale. It got me through many grueling day jobs!

How did you come up with the name for your podcast?

It started as a placeholder! Legally, an "estate" is the sum of a person's assets and liabilities; when they die, it's distributed to their heirs. When my dad died, he left nothing but this question and so, in a way, it was his "estate." However, as we investigated, we found that the term could also apply to the justice system, which every generation "inherits" and has to keep up. I pushed many times to change it, but in the end it worked. For the record, my ideal title was "MurderDad."
